Mahindra Scorpio N Pickup expert overview
Overview
We are nearing Independence day and as is the tradition, it is Mahindra who steals the spotlight with brand new products and concepts And this year is no different! One of the highlight cars which has been teased is going to be the production version of the Mahindra Scorpio N pickup truck, which is set to be revealed on August 14. Do note that the name of the vehicle is yet to be announced.
It won’t be the first time that the Indian carmaker has had a pickup truck in its stable, as the Scorpio Gateway was sold back in the early 2010s, right until the late 2020s. The latest one is expected to use the Scorpio N as a base for its niche lifestyle pickup truck.
Do note that a concept was already showcased earlier in the form of the Mahindra Global Pik Up in South Africa. Here’s what you can expect from it.
Exterior
The latest teaser clearly shows that the Scorpio N based pickup truck will get a host of different design elements to set it apart from its SUV sibling.
From what we can see, it will sport a different set of LED headlights that get sleeker lighting elements and a new grille with classy looking chrome elements.
It is a double-cab pickup truck, meaning, you get rear seats too, with dedicated doors.
The proportions of the concept were dramatic with a snorkel, chunky all-terrain/off-road tyres and fancy 5-spoke alloy wheels. However, these elements are unlikely in the production model and the wheels are also likely to be slightly smaller with all-terrain tyres. The concept also sported side steps, which will make it into production as confirmed by a test mule, recently.
At the rear, there is a large ‘Mahindra’ engraving across the tailgate and a sleek set of LED tail lamps. A chunky rear bumper is expected to round off the overall look.
Interior
The teaser also showed a glimpse of the cabin and if you’re thinking it will be a copy paste of the Scorpio N’s dashboard, you are wrong. The Mahindra Scorpio pickup gets a brand new dashboard that looks thoroughly modern and minimalist. And considering its nature, everything looks rugged and chunky.
There is a new steering wheel with big mounted controls for all your important functions. The centre part of the dashboard houses a large portrait-oriented infotainment system, which does duty for both the infotainment purposes and climate control. And fret not, Mahindra has provided it with physical climate control knobs as well. The floor console has plenty of buttons and knobs, presumably to control its off-road features and the infotainment system.
The Scorpio N pickup truck’s cabin is finished in black, but for added contrast there are some silver elements and overall first impressions of its cabin are definitely positive.
Features
The cabin teaser has already given us an idea of what to expect in terms of features. And as already seen, there is a large infotainment system, digital driver’s display (likely to be 12.3-inches), and dual-zone climate control.
Other features that are expected to be part of the package include a branded sound system, powered front seats with ventilation, a wireless phone charger, push button start with keyless entry and probably a sunroof as well.
Safety
Considering that this is a Mahindra, we expect no stone to be unturned in this department. Six airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, hill-hold control, electronic stability control, and a 540-degree camera should be part of the package. It should also get Level-2 autonomous driving assistance systems (ADAS).
Performance
Like most other pickup trucks in India, we believe that the Mahindra pickup truck will be diesel-powered. It will use the 2.2-litre diesel engine that also does duties in other Mahindra SUVs like the Scorpio N itself, and it will be available with the option of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Of course, a proper four-wheel drive train will be on offer with various terrain modes on offer.
The exact state of tune hasn’t been confirmed by the carmaker, and could vary with respect to the Scorpio N or other of its siblings.
Verdict
First impressions of Mahindra’s pickup truck seem positive ahead of its unveiling on August 14. While most pickup trucks focus on function-first, this Scorpio N pickup truck seems to take that and dial up the modern factor a notch with its butch design and especially its modern feature-loaded cabin. Clearly, Mahindra is aiming to infuse a bit of family-friendlyness and make the vehicle easy to live for daily usage. Stay tuned to CarDekho as we will bring more details about the Scorpio N pickup truck on August 14!
