Hyundai Kona Electric, Tata Nexon EV & MG ZS EV To Get Cheaper By Rs 1.50 Lakh In Delhi

Buying an EV in Delhi to be even more rewarding thanks to the capital's new Electric Vehicle Policy

The emission norms are tightening and electric cars are finally getting the attention that they deserve. The Delhi government has announced a new policy to promote EV adoption among the residents of the country's capital. Not only does it aim at improving Delhi's air and incentivising EV buyers but support charging infrastructure as well. Let's dive into the details in a few simple points:

What is it?

• The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy aims to increase the adoption of battery-powered vehicles in the state capital. The policy seeks to offer an incentive of Rs 10,000 per kWh of the EV's battery capacity with a ceiling of Rs 1.50 lakh.

• This means that buyers of Tata's Nexon EV whose battery size is 30.2kWh stands to get an incentive of Rs 1.50 lakh on its ex-showroom price that ranges between Rs 13.99 lakh and Rs 15.99 lakh. The same goes for the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

• In addition to this, the road tax and registration fees will also be completely waived off.

• That said, these benefits will be applicable only to the first 1,000 private EV buyers in the Delhi region.

• All EVs will bear a green number plate.

• Buying an electric car in Delhi will be even more lucrative as they will also get tax incentives of up to Rs 2.5 lakh that were announced under FAME II last year.

When will it come in effect?

The above order is now operational and will continue to be enforced for three years from now.

Any update on supporting infrastructure?

• Installation of EV chargers at home will be necessary for an owner but there are some special tariffs to be had here as well.

• Electricity DISCOMS (distribution companies) will be asked to optimise load sharing to accommodate EV charging. Different metering along with special tariffs for the EV charging will also be offered.

• The law also mandates that newly built workplace and co-operative buildings earmark 20 percent of their parking for EVs with conduits for charging infrastructure.

• To encourage existing buildings and apartments, the Delhi government will offer incentives of up to Rs 6,000 per charging equipment. Only the first 30,000 charging apparatuses will be eligible for these grants.

• The government also plans to dot Delhi with public EV chargers in a 3km range from any given point within the capital.

Anything else that needs to be considered?

• The benefits will be directly transferred to the buyer once the purchase is completed and the proof is submitted to the transport authorities.

• The EVs bought under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy will bear a sticker denoting the same.

The Delhi transport department will birth a dedicated EV cell to look into the above proceedings. Hopefully, Delhi which has been marred by pollution in past years, will set an example in carbon footprint control for other states to follow in the coming years.
