A tragic end for the opening race of Nurburgring-held VLN endurance series, left one spectator dead and several others injured. The crash, which took place quite recently, involved the number 23 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 driven by winner of 2011 GT Academy- Jann Mardenborough.

As evident from the video above, Jann’s car became airborne near the section 80 of the Nurburgring. Called ‘Flugplatz’ in German, it’s quite common for cars to lift in this particular airfield section, all because of a sharp hill followed by a sudden drop. Once airborne, the car flipped and smashed a barrier followed by landing on its roof in the spectator area next to it. The race was red flagged immediately after the incident and medical crew came into action to attend the injured. Also, the decision not to restart the race was made.

As per reports, at least five spectators were injured in the incident and despite immediate efforts one of them lost his life. While the British race car driver suffered from some minor injuries and was taken to hospital soon after that.

1991-born Jann Mardenborough, became a race car by defeating over 90,000 co-participants in the 2011 season of GT Academy held by Sony and Nissan to promote the Gran Turismo game series. This year, he will be driving in the GP3 series as well as in the FIA GT Endurance Championship. Also, the Nissan GT-R LM in the 24h of LeMans and the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 in the VLN and 24h of Nurburgring are his other fields of involvement.
