Jeep, a brand well known for creating tough and rugged purpose-built off-road vehicles, has just unveiled its first small SUV, the new Jeep Renegade. This entry hints Jeep’s new approach towards a new segment, and eventually newer markets. The renegade is the first car that is jointly developed by Fiat Chrysler’s Italian and American engineers at the SATA plant in Melfi, Italy.

The new compact SUV will come with a 9-speed transmission and will have rear axle disconnect. Engine options include three diesel and three petrol variants. The diesel units include a 1.6 that produces 120bhp of power and 320Nm paired with a 6-speed transmission, while the 2.0 Multiet II comes in two states of tune. One produces 140bhp and the other pushing out 170bhp, with the same 350Nm peak torque from a low 1,750rpm.

The petrol units include a 1.6 litre E-torQ producing 110bhp and a 1.4 litre MultiAir II turbo with 140bhp and 170bhp on tap. The frame architecture beneath enables the Renegade to achieve Jeep’s fabled ‘Trail Rated’ status. This means the new model will be able to combine best-in-class off-road ability with world-class on-road driving dynamics. Inside, functional details crafted from high quality materials and using innovative colours ensure the Renegade will become a polished addition to its owners’ lives. It’ll be a practical one too, courtesy of best-in-class interior space and clever, functional storage areas.

Equipment has been designed to boost on-board comfort. Interior technology includes the intuitive Uconnect touch-screen for infotainment with a choice between 5 and 6.5-inch screens. The range of options includes the kind of open air freedom that until now has been unavailable in the small SUV class. The unique-to-segment My Sky has two lightweight panels that can be easily removed and stowed in the boot for a truly panoramic open-air experience.
