Chevrolet Spark to get a smaller engine

General Motors, confirmed the news on Thursday, that the company intends to launch the Chevrolet Spark in India with a small engine, in two years' time for the domestic auto market. General Motors announced that the new model of Chevrolet Spark will be priced the lowest in the company's stable. The new swanky car will compete with the likes of Maruti 800, Maruti Alto and Tata Nano. The Chevrolet Spark currently comes in LPG models and one litre petrol engine in the domestic market. General Motors, want to be the pioneers and taking the advantage of the growing Indian auto market. The company is also manufacturing the diesel version of Chevrolet Beat and is also keen to launch the LPG model for the same by next year in January. The company in the process of expansion and moving ahead in the domestic market. GM is also working on the all electric model of Chevrolet Tavera, the MUV which is speculated to be launched in April by next year.

Karl Slym the president of General Motors India said that, the company already has Chevrolet Spark which is fitted with a small engine in the international auto market and the company wishes to bring it in the Indian market in two years' time. GM currently sells Chevrolet Spark 800 cc in South Africa. Currently, GM in India has three small hatchback models which are Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Beat and Chevrolet Aveo U-VA. As per the experts, from the auto industry, GM introduced 1.2 litre Chevrolet Beat last year at a competitive price which is likely that the company will again venture with the same volume game with the new version of Chevrolet Spark 800 cc.

The experts further throwing light on GM India's plan stated that the company strategically planned to overprice Chevrolet Spark which GM reduced later and it acted in its favour. They also added that, GM India in the beginning will import Chevrolet Spark 800 cc and later the manufacturing will be localized. When asked about the manufacturing of commercial vehicles (CV) with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), Slym replied that, the company will launch its first CV by 2012 under Chevrolet brand. He also said that, the Commercial vehicles will be manufactured at Halol facility in Gujarat as per the Indian standards. General Motors is also keen to localize the manufacturing of the CV range upto 90 per cent which will be essentially Pick ups and vans.
