Post a pre-debut web unveiling, BMW has now officially revealed its new X5 M and X6 M performance SUVs in flesh, at the on-going 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Based on the latest-generation X5 and X6 regular counterparts, the updated duo now comes with more power, extra gears and a host of other technological upgrades.

Both models comes equipped with a common engine and gearbox. Powering the duo is an uprated version of the familiar twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V-8 mill, rated at 575-bhp and 750 nm, mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. That peak torque, by the way, is produced from as low as 2,200 rpm, helping the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 4.0 seconds flat, while the top speed is to 250 kmph.

The duo gets BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive comes as standard, but with a rear-biased torque split unique to these M variants. The system employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to allow fully variable distribution of drive between the front and rear axles, from 100 percent at the rear to up to 100 percent at the front.

The engineers at BMW has also worked over the suspension setup, as the duo comes gets modified upper wishbones, which result into enhanced camber as well as optimized camber progression, and steering pivot axis to aid agility in corners. The coils are also stiffer than before, causing a 10-millimeter drop in the ride height. While the suspension duty is being taken care by self-levelling air suspension. And yes, everything is adjustable, within three modes- Comfort, Sport and Sport+.

Exteriors of the X5 M or the X6 M features large air intakes at the front end, aerodynamically-shaped side mirror caps, body-colored side moldings and quad-exhaust tips. While the same is carried onto the interiors where designers have also installed a number of unique M enhancements.
