Mitsubishi Outlander review

Mitsubishi recently re-launched its Mitsubishi Outlander in India. In place of 5-seater variant, a 7-seater variant is now also available for those who are professional by the week and off roaders on the weekends. The theme of the new avatar is more aggressive styling and luxury. The major part of the alteration comes at front side. The Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) has borrowed many features from the Outlander GT Prototype. In fact, one would not notice any alteration at the rear side.

Mitsubishi Outlander is loaded with a 2.4-litre engine which would deliver 170-Ps power and 226-Nm torque at 4100rpm. It has 16 Valve MPI MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-Timing Electronic Control System) with the displacement of 2360cc. The vehicle incorporates INVECS-III CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) type transmission with 6 speed manual and 6 speed paddle shift. The steering wheel of the Mitsubishi Outlander is Hydraulic Variable power assisted. With the help of the innovative engine technology, the SUV can touch a top speed of 190 km/h and the minimum turning radius is 5.3 meters. Mitsubishi Outlander is provided with front McPherson coil springs with stabilizer bar and rear Multi-link coil springs with Stabilizer Bar that ensure smooth riding.

The front face of Mitsubishi Outlander is totally changed by the company and it is made to look very sporty. The front face now is sleeker but aggressive. The front grille comes in jet fighter style and has been taken from Lancer Evo. Apart from that the front bumper, roofrails and hood are modified completely. The upgraded headlamp cluster is more stylish than before and is integrated with turn indicators. The outside rear view mirrors are also fitted with integrated turn indicators. According to the company officials, the new Mitsubishi Outlander is available in seven colour option.

Mitsubishi Outlander Exterior

The new Mitsubishi Outlander appears to be amongst the best cars in respect of the exterior appearance. Halogen with high intensity discharge capacity is used in the headlamps with washers for a clear vision, it has anti-pinch power window that is laminated with green windshield glasses to make it look classy. Above all, on the upper front of the Outlander rear deflector with high mount LED stop lamp is given to air down the rear windows of SUVs and to keep the windows clear of craps. Roof rails give it a tough look.

Exterior Measurements

The exterior measurement is sketched decently with the overall length of 4640 mm, 1800 mm of width and the height of 1680 mm, while the wheel base is 2670mm with the ground clearance of 215 mm. The Mitsubishi Outlander is heavier, has more sporty looks.

The Outlander 2012 is full of new-gen features like a keyless operating system, Rockford Fosgate premium 710 watt music system which is loaded with a 6 CD changer and a USB port with Aux-in. The row seating, cruise control, leather upholstery, 3-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls adds to the youthfulness of the SUV. Acceleration & Pick-Up

The all new Mitsubishi Outlander has a great pick up, its engine accelerates from zero to 100 kmph in 13 seconds and maximum speed with which it can fly is 200 km/hour, which makes it blaster in speed. Using the centrally located dial, the system permits free switching between 3 drive model depending on driving condition or environment. With 6 speeds, INVECS-III Automatic can adjust the gear and shift timings to perfectly reflect individual driving styles. As an added benefit, Sports Mode provides the sporty driving enjoyment of a manual transmission.

Easily accessible on the center console, the driver-mode selector dial can quickly change the SUV’s drive mode from fuel-efficient 2WD to 4 wheel drive or Lock Mode for mastering even challenging off-road or weather conditions.

Close to steering wheel, the magnesium paddle shifters enhance sporty driving while ensuring that both hands stay on steering.  Pulling the up-shift lever for more than two seconds returns the transmission to fully automatic mode. Clearly displaying the drive mode on the MID (Multi Information Display) contributes to smoother, more fuel efficient drive.

Engine and Performance

The new Mitsubishi Outlander carries 2360 cc 2.4litre with 16 valve MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing and Electronic Control system) gasoline engine that delivers a power of 170 Ps at 6000 rpm and a torque of 226 Nm at 4100 rpm.  The SUV has a capacity to produce an enormous speed and excellent pick up. It is embedded with 6 gears Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) that favours a sporty and adventurous ride even in rough conditions making every highway and every city drive a joyful ride. This engine brings out the devil in every sophisticated man that sits behind the steering wheel.

The all new Mitsubishi Outlander has a powerful 2360 cc 2.4litre 16 value MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing and Electronic Control system) petrol engine, which offers a competitive mileage in SUV (Sports Utility vehicle) segment that adds one more advantage to own this car, the average mileage of the car on city road is 8kmpl while on highway it has a gross average approx 12kmpl which is pretty good for a SUV. The electronically reined multi point fuel injection system results in extra frugality.

Power of Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi Outlander is out in the market in petrol variant and is rendered with a 2.4litre 16 valve MIVEC engine with the 6 gears Continuously Variable Transmissions that delivers the maximum power of 170 PS @ 6000 rpm. This excellent power makes the new Mitsubishi a powerful performer. MIVEC is an innovative technology continuously varies the valve timing, thus contributing to satisfying power as well as exceptional fuel economy. Boasting higher torque at low RPMs and greater output for smooth top-end power, MIVEC technology mixes together fuel efficiency with sporty performance while minimizing harmful emission. This engine alters the intake and exhaust valve timing to optimize engine output across a wider RPM range, producing high torque at low RPMs and satisfying top-end power for highway cruising confidence.

Braking & Handling

The all new Mitsubishi Outlander is powered with fresh braking system which includes a new single 10-in, brake booster that cultivates boost power and brake ambience. It holds four disc brakes including two ventilated discs. The front brakes utilize powerful dual-piston callipers, with single piston callipers at the rear, the standard anti-lock braking system(ABS) comes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) which makes it more trustworthy at the time of instant braking. The powerful Mitsubishi Outlander offers a smooth, barrier free and a safe riding experience.

With All wheel control, all 4 wheels are controlled independently to ensure superior handling in all conditions. EBD evenly distributes braking force to the rear wheels adding to overall safety. Front seats are equipped with pre-tensioners (double pre-tensioners for driver) that reel in to securing the occupant in the initial moments of a collision and force limiters that gently release the occupant to reduce the risk of injury. Outlander is made of rigid body with lightweight aluminium roof panel. Ideal use of solid insulators and other measures help ensure that the interior is a quiet, comfortable place to be.

RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body design is based on the concepts of regression and structural integrity; crush zones progressively crumple to absorb impact energy and key structural areas direct energy away from the cabin, itself solidly reinforced against deformation. The outcome is better collision regardless of impact direction.

The security alarm uses an ultra sonic sensor to trigger off siren and hazard lamps in the event of doors and hood, which were locked by remote control being forced open. The inclination Sensor also raises the alarm in the event of unauthorized movement of vehicle when it was locked. Another standard anti-theft measure is an Engine Immobilizer which restricts the engine from starting if an unauthorized ignition key is used.

The latest coupe in SUV segment, Mitsubishi Outlander has great and reliable wheels that helps make it stand at the position of the most powerful vehicle in the crowd. It offers stylish Space saver steel rim 215/70 R, 16" x 6", silver plated Alloy Wheel with 5 Swirled spokes which are well suited to tame the misbehaving Indian road conditions.
