Splintered windshield, a broken number plate, dented bonnet, a severed steering wheel are just the physical remnants of a road accident; the injuries and emotional trauma to the driver, occupants, the damage to property follow. A road accident is an unfortunate incident which involves physical and emotional losses. Added to the agony is the niggling worry of making a claim, which can be reduced if you compare car insurance policies. Take the sting out of the bee by following these simple tips.

Stay calm and arrange for emergency medical attention for those who need it. If the nature of accident is major, do not move your vehicle from the accident spot as your insurer might require a spot survey. Record the nature of injury inflicted both on you and fellow passengers and keep a track of all medical expenses borne.

Make a mental note or record the details −both minute and large− of the events preceding the accident. Don’t let the minute details escape your attention as these will be of immense help during the time of making a claim. Listing missing or damaged items kept in your car is also a great idea.

Take care not to overlook bystanders as they can double up as witnesses later. If your physical state permits, do collect their contact information to back up your claim. Taking pictures of the accident site is another important thing to do. Photograph the skid marks, the damage caused to the vehicle, etc. to add weight to your claim. Make sure you register the case with the police within 24 hours of the accident. On the arrival of the police, collect the registration number of the case to ease the claim process.

Inform the insurance company (on the contact number mentioned in the policy document) at the earliest about the accident. Make sure you make your claim in the stipulated time frame as specified by your policy. Remember you should file a claim only if it is on the higher side to avail discounts during your policy renewal.
