Green car on Green Hell seems legit. Toyota on the path of global publicity of its Plug-in hybrid Prius has set a new record on the Nurburgring track. To our readers less familiar with races and tracks- Nurburgring is a racing track which is also known as Green Hell or Death Valley, because of its lush greenery and tragic accidents in the past. The record, however was not to show the Prius is fastest among its competitors but to show that the car is economically efficient having high mileage figures.

Toyota on this 20.81 km circuit took 20 minutes and 59 seconds to complete by using just 0.4L/100km, or 698 miles per gallon while in the Indian metric system it comes as 297km/litre! The car though is a plug-in hybrid and uses power from its full charged battery. The final figures that came out were less than Toyota's claimed combined figure of 1.76L/100km for the plug-in version. After the results, Toyota claimed that the car used less than five tablespoons of fuel during the record run.

During the lap, Prius was on low rolling resistance tyres along with TRD accessories. The car maintained the required minimum average speed of 60km/h. While the actual track record of 6 minutes and 57 seconds is adored to Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid supercar.

Commenting on the record, Joe Clifford, the driver said, “Although the 12.9-mile (20.7kms) distance is similar to a typical commuter trip, the difference here is a rise and fall in elevation of around 1,000 feet. In fact it was only on one long climb that the petrol engine cut in, and then only for a short while. Without that, we think we might have even achieved the ultimate 999.9mpg read-out – the highest figure the display can show.”
