The craze for the diesel cars in India seems to increase with every passing day. Cars like Chevrolet Beat Diesel, Toyota Etios Diesel, Toyota Etios Liva Diesel and new Maruti Swift are witnessing a high demand given the conditions in the market of the high petrol prices and high interest rates. However, the situation in Delhi might alter the scenario slightly as the Delhi Government has decided to increase the car registration fee on the diesel models by 25%. Though brought into action now, the hike on diesel car registration was proposed back in March by the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit.

The idea is to promote the petrol cars by discouraging the diesel car buyers. This move by the Government is taken, keeping the environmental concerns in mind. Increasing the registration fee on the diesel cars will check the consumers from buying more diesel cars. However, the latest diesel engine technology has proved to maintain much cleaner and greener environment, not to forget the economy and efficiency part. The growth in the demand for diesel car is so high that even the leading automobile manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up with the pace. The recent hike in the registration fee of diesel cars will affect the entry-level diesel car buyer by Rs 6,000 taking all the way up to Rs 20,000 – Rs 30,000 for the diesel driven luxury cars.

The statistics show that the diesel car sales is likely to touch 80% in the coming few months. Some of the car manufacturers are apparently observing a negative growth in their petrol model sales due to the high diesel car demand and sales. It is said, that while consumers have to pay 4% of the total cost of the vehicle towards the car registration until now, will have to pay 5%. Similarly a luxury car registration was 10% of the car cost, which is now increased to 12.5%. A 7% registration cost will be looking at 8.75%.
