General Motors likely to introduce electric mini car

General Motors India made an announcement in Delhi recently, that they have some concrete plans of manufacturing an electric mini-car at the Talegaon plant located in the state of Maharashtra. The production of this car will begin after showcasing the model of the coupe around June in India.

The well-established firm moreover, came up with a diesel option of Chevrolet Beat (another car by GM) that consists of 1 litre of engine. This version will be seen in the showrooms this June. The cost of the diesel variant are said to be approximately 10-15% hiked as compared to the petrol variant. According to the president of GM India, MD Karl Slym, the new model of electric mini-car will be showcased probably on 5th June,  World Environment Day. This coupe is created in United States of America whose main focus is on the international viewers.

The actual launch of this electric car would be slated on the basis of the feedback given by the customers at the showcasing event. If the feedback is strong, then it will be manufactured at the Talegaon Plant in Maharashtra. This plant has the ability to churn out approximately 1.4 Lakh coupes per annum. However, it is at present trying to expand the production to 3 Lakh units annually. When asked about the REVA Project, GM officials told that REVA project has been closed totally. The new electric mini-car is said to be completely different from REVA. In the new car, lithium ion battery will be used to drive the motor.

Nonetheless, Mahindra has purchased around 55.2% venture in REVA. Earlier before Chevrolet Beat, General Motors introduced Chevrolet Spark, which was quite a big success among the mass. Currently, the petrol version of Beat costs around Rs. 3.55 Lakh to Rs. 4.66 Lakh.
