The BMW 6 Series is a range of executive coupés produced by the German automaker, BMW. The first was the E24, being derived from the first generation 7 Series, the BMW E23. The E24 was launched in 1976 to replace the 3.0CS & 3.0CSi (E9). 14 years later, in 2003, BMW released the all new E63/E64 which was available as a coupé and convertible, based on the chassis of the E60 5 Series sedan. Models were the 645Ci (later replaced with the 650i) and the 630i, while the highest performance model is the BMW M6. The third generation F12 and F13 6 series were released in 2011 for the 2012 model year, sharing a platform and some engines with the 7 Series (F01) and 5 Series (F10), and introducing a four-door coupé (fastback sedan) style. BMW unveiled information and pictures in September, 2010 of the Concept 6 Series, which was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The third generation BMW F12 (coupé) and F13 (convertible) were released as 2012 models at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show and New York Auto Show. BMW revealed the 6-Series Convertible on November 18, 2010. The vehicle is powered by two petrol engines and a diesel engine - a 6-cylinder, twin power turbo engine which will produce 320bhp (239 kW) at 5800rpm and the 650i will be powered by a V8, twin turbo engine which will produce 407bhp (303 kW) at 5500rpm. The 640d is powered by an I6 twin scroll turbocharged diesel engine producing 313bhp (233 kW) at 4400rpm. The folding top is still fabric as compared to the E93 3 Series convertible which is equipped with a metal roof. Both the 640 and the 650 are available in BMW's all-wheel drive layout as the 640ix and 650ix. Initially announced in December 2011, and on display to the public at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, BMW extended the 6 Series range with a four-door saloon to provide a rival to the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS. Initially shown as the Gran Coupe Concept in 2010, which was based on the 2007 CS Concept, the Gran Coupe is available in 640i, 640d and 650i derivatives. The 650i's V8 now produces 444bhp (331 kW). Till date BMW Group has invested more than Rs 180 Crores in India. The wide range of BMW activities in India include the establishment of a production plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, parts warehouse in Mumbai and development of a dealer organisation across major metropolitan centres of the country. Though the Chennai plant, at the moment, is not producing the 6 series, it has future plans for it as the FR layout of the 6 series is more suited to the Indian sub-continent. The Grand Tourer class of the 6 series is essential in the future development of the Indian BMW centre.

BMW 6 Series Engine and Performance
BMW 6 Series is available with 2 engine options: 1 diesel and 1 petrol. The 4395cc, V8 petrol engine generates maximum power of 407bhp with maximum torque of 600Nm. The 2996cc petrol engine develops maximum power of 313bhp with maximum torque of 630Nm. The 6-Series Convertible is available in only petrol (powered by 4395cc, V8 petrol engine). The Coupe is available in both petrol and diesel. Gran Coupe is available in only diesel. With the BMW 6 Series Coupé, long distances become sprints. Just a brief press of the accelerator unleashes the power of the V8 petrol engine. In every corner you sense the close contact with the road; each acceleration releases the captivating and sonorous sound of the 8 cylinders. Make travelling your favourite sport: the V8 engine with petrol direct injection and TwinPower Turbo accelerates with an outstanding 330 kW (450bhp) and a maximum torque of 650Nm from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. As befits its performance, the V8 petrol engine is thrifty – using an average of 8.9 to 8.6 l/100 km with combined CO2 emissions of 206 to 199g/km. The 8-speed Sport automatic transmission Steptronic keeps the engine in the optimum revving range and shifts almost imperceptibly while offering you supreme travelling comfort. Centrally fitted exhaust turbochargers in the V of the cylinder banks permit an especially compact engine design and hence a low weight. The combination of systematic lightweight chassis construction and optimised aerodynamics produces unique agility, perfect road-holding and absolutely precise handling. Dynamic Driving Control gives the BMW 6 Series Convertible even more sporting character at the touch of a button. The result is a more spontaneous engine response, sportier gear shifts and a tighter setting for the steering. The optional Adaptive Drive also stiffens the chassis and offers the additional COMFORT mode. The only reason you’ll want to step off the accelerator is to open the roof and feel the wind.
Wheels
The BMW 6 Series Coupe front and rear tyre dimensions are 225/55 R17 Y and 225/55 R 17 Y. Wheel dimension and material front and rear end are 8J x17 inch, light- alloy. Whereas the Convertible version measures 245/40 R19 front and 275/35 R19 rear and wheel dimension and material front and rear are 8.5 J x19 inch light alloy and 9J x19 inch, light alloy.
Braking & Handling
The most dynamic and comfortable way to save: the eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic not only ensures incredibly swift changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption. Only the tachometer will reveal how fast and seamlessly the new eight-speed sports automatic transmission changes gear. The additional gears are finely graduated so that the change from third to fourth gear, for example, takes place with small rev intervals and the transmission process itself is barely perceptible. At the same time, the engine is always held at the performance level at which it can optimally utilise its strength. For more dynamics, more comfort – and more efficiency. At higher speeds the engine revs drop due to the eight gear, thus decreasing fuel consumption, which is further reduced in the BMW 640i thanks to the automatic transmission with Auto Start Stop function. The engine switches of when the car stops and starts up again while your foot is leaving the brake pedal. A touch of the paddle next to the gearshift lever changes the level of driving pleasure from NORMAL to SPORT: the engine responds more spontaneously to the accelerator and the eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic lets the engine rev high before quickly changing up a gear. At the same time it tightens the setting of the steering. Touch the paddle again to enter the SPORT + mode where the Dynamic Stability Control allows controlled drifting to the limit. The currently active mode is permanently displayed underneath the speedometer, and in the SPORT mode the drive train and chassis settings can be quickly and individually configured using the iDrive Controller for dynamic driving on badly surfaced roads for example. The optional Adaptive Drive offers selectable chassis settings and the additional COMFORT mode. Until now, braking meant giving away energy. Brake Energy Regeneration puts an end to this by winning energy back during braking to charge the battery. As soon as drivers take their foot off the accelerator the generator is engaged and converts excess kinetic energy into electrical energy. Once the battery is fully charged, the generator is disengaged from the engine. This unburdens the engine and reduces emissions. Fuel consumption savings means that there is more power available for acceleration.
Handling & Safety
The electromechanical power steering system only activates when it's needed: when you're turning the wheel. It draws electrical power from the battery, which Brake Energy Regeneration has previously captured from the vehicle's kinetic energy. This element of BMW Efficient Dynamics replaces the conventional hydraulic power-steering system with an electric motor. While hydraulic systems constantly draw power from the engine - thereby consuming extra fuel - the innovative BMW system only springs into action when it's actually needed. If you don't move the steering wheel (on a straight, for example, or on a steady curve) the electric motor remains inactive, reducing power consumption. Take control of your travel plans with BMW Assist. Up-to-date traffic information, congestion reports and alternative route suggestions can be called up at the press of a button. The automatic emergency assistance with vehicle location feature is also on hand to increase passenger safety. A clear view in unclear situations with innovations from BMW ConnectedDrive: up to five cameras give the BMW 6 Series Coupé a clear view of any situation. Two front-end Side View cameras are integrated in the front bumper, one directed to the left and one to the right. Both images are shown simultaneously on the free-standing Control Display to give you a clear view when carrying out parking manoeuvres. The Rear View camera also provides welcome support when parking. Interactive lane lines in the image inform the driver whether or not the parking space is large enough. The zoom function allows you to adjust the image so that you can attach a trailer to the tow bar without the need for further assistance. The Top View cameras in the wing mirrors complete the camera package. Together with the data from the Rear View camera the system generates a bird's eye image of the BMW 6 Series Coupé and its current location. Whether you are entering or leaving a parking space, carrying out every manoeuvre is simple and safe. Top and side views are constituents of the optional Surround View.

BMW 6 Series Pros :
Amazing handling, cool gadgets, plush Interiors and breath taking acceleration.
BMW 6 Series Cons :
Expect to make stops at the service centre every now and then. While it is a wonderful car, it is prone to electronic and tire issues. And a bit heavy on the pocket.

After a day filled with waiting BMW India has finally launched their first four-door coupe, the all new BMW 6-series 640d Gran coupe, which was first unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. In a pleasantly surprising move, Philipp von Sahr, president of BMW Group addressed those present in Hindi and Marathi which was received very well. He also stated that the BMW 1-Series hatchbacks and 7-Series will be launched by 2013 and will be locally produced which means that the pricing for these models will be extremely competitive. The 4-door coupe has been launched at the relatively inexpensive price of Rs. 86.40 lakh (Ex-showroom India). The coupe measures a total of 1392 mm in height, 1894 mm in width, 5007 mm in length and sits on a more than ample wheelbase of 2969mm.

Among the string of launches from the luxury car manufacturer BMW, a 6-series Gran coupe is also one of them. It makes the news all the more interesting when there is an India launch slated for the new coupe. If rumours are to be believed, the new BMW 6-series will be launched globally before making it to the Indian car market. 2012 Geneva Motor Show is where the new version is expected to break the cover. The new version of the famous four-seater coupe is expected to be more on lines on the Mercedes-Benz CLS Class and Audi A7 existing in the Indian markets. The major distinction from the previous models are the two new doors on the coupe for extended comfort.

The recent pact between the German luxury brand BMW and the Japaense auto giant Toyota Motors is expected to paint a new picture globally. Both the car manufacturers are ace players in their respective segments. BMW is globally renowned for its profound interest in diesel engine development. On the other hand, Toyota Motors broke the records where the hybrid engine technology is concerned. The auto majors have done some clever strategizing here. Why not make use of each other in their areas of expertise. BMW develops highly fuel efficient 1.6 L and 2.0L diesel engines, not to mention these are exceptionally low on emission engines.
