Formerly known as the Reva Electric Car Company (RECC), Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited was founded in 1994 as a joint venture between the Maini Group of Bangalore and AEV LLC of USA. The company's sole aim was to develop and produce an affordable compact electric car, and with global patents in energy management, remote diagnostics and battery management to their credit, the company unveiled the two-seater REVA electric vehicle in Bangalore in 2001. Subsequently, the same electric car was launched in London as the G-Wiz in 2004. Their flagship vehicle REVAi electric car is available in 24 countries and the company has 4, 500 vehicles on road. Innovation & research forms the bedrock of the REVA strategy, be it developing a proprietary “Energy management system” and advanced batteries for electric vehicles to designing the computation brain of an electric vehicle - a key factor when it comes to performance and reliability. 'Born Green' is an operating philosophy that Mahindra REVA strongly adheres to. It consists of a conscious effort to minimize environmental impact across all business areas. The ultra-low carbon assembly plant, in Bangalore, bears testimony to this commitment. Developed in accordance with the standards set by The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC, India), the state-of-the-art plant is the first automobile unit in India to be certified PLATINUM - which is the highest rating for a green plant. The entire building is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited allowing the company to boast one of the lowest dirt-to-dust carbon footprints in the automotive world.
Indian automobile manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra bought a controlling stake in Reva worth 55.2 per cent in May 2010. The company was rechristened Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Private Limited after the acquisition. Today Mahindra REVA has one of the largest deployed fleets of electric cars in the global market. They constantly experiment with different offerings, ranging from designing light-weight structures and creating efficient drive-trains to intelligent cars of tomorrow.
