Same, Same But Different? Not really!
After spending roughly over 2,000 km with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, it's fair to say the badge-engineered compact SUV in town is already showing signs of being more than just a pretty face with a Toyota logo. Yes, it’s based on the Maruti Fronx, but is the Taisor just a familiar recipe in a new bottle? Or does it have enough charm and character to stand out in the crowded compact SUV space? That’s exactly what we’re going to find out as we live with it over the coming months.
Let’s begin with our first impressions:
Say Hi, Taisor!
We have just welcomed the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor into our long-term fleet, and it already feels like that quiet new kid in class who doesn’t say much, but gets everything right.
Sure, it shares its roots with the Fronx, but this Toyota comes with just subtle tweaks in design and positioning to earn its own space in our garage.
Our test car is the 1-litre turbo-petrol automatic, and over the next 3 months, we will find out just how well it handles everything from daily commutes and airport runs to outstation road trips and the odd chaotic shopping day.
Quite A Familiar Feeling
I did use the Dzire and the Swift, which are Taisor’s garage mates for a while, and maybe that is why I get a sense of familiarity when I sit inside the cabin.
In the first month that we have had the Taisor, the turbo-petrol engine feels eager and responsive, and the 6-speed torque converter automatic keeps things smooth and fuss-free, especially in traffic.
Ride quality is mature and composed, soaking up bad roads with confidence, and the compact footprint makes urban duties a breeze. The cabin is not exactly extravagant, but it's functional and even a bit stylish, thanks to the burgundy-black interior theme.
Features like wireless Apple CarPlay and a 360-degree camera come in handy in daily use. Fuel efficiency has also been adequate so far, hovering around 15-17 kmpl in mixed conditions.
Daily Diaries: Folks Approved!
An interesting test, though, came when my parents were in town last week. We had planned a casual day out for shopping and errands, and instead of our Seltos, we decided to give the Taisor a spin. And you know what? It turned out to be a surprisingly solid companion.
Zipping through city traffic felt effortless, with the turbo engine keeping up and the automatic gearbox handling the grunt work. The compact size made tight streets and quick parking jobs, yes, even up on curbs, a non-issue.
What really stood out, though, was the comfort. My folks, not ones to hand out compliments easily, actually said the seats were well-cushioned, and they appreciated how easy it was to get in and out of the car.
That’s a small but important win in our books.
What’s Next?
Next up for the Taisor? A couple of Pune-Mumbai highway runs are in the pipeline. And with my engagement coming up soon, let’s just say the number of shopping trips is about to skyrocket.
If early signs are anything to go by, the Taisor might just become the go-to errand runner in the months to come.
It’s comfortable, easy to live with, smooth in traffic, and packs just enough performance to keep things interesting. More importantly, it feels dependable. And over 2000 km, that quiet confidence is what has won us over. We will be watching closely for how it performs in the months to come, on long road trips, during monsoon madness, and through daily city chaos.
Stay tuned as we continue to put this compact Toyota through its paces, one daily task at a time.
