IVT (Infinitely variable transmissions) is very similar to a continuously variable transmission. IVT performs continuous shifts to provide superior efficiency over automatic transmissions. It does this by modulating the pressure of the pulley system in the transmission, adjusting pressure based on the input of the driver, and driving conditions. The pulley system it uses has a wide-ratio, directly correlating to a much broader ratio of operation than many other, similar transmission systems. This is what leads to an increase in fuel efficiency at the higher gear ratios yet an improvement in performance on the lower end.
