September 28, 2015: BMW has launched the X1 sDrive20d M Sport in India at Rs 37.9 lacs, ex-showroom New Delhi. The silent launch came with the introduction of a single variant that will be the only option from now on. Earlier 2016 BMW X1 has made its much awaited public debut at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung aka Frankfurt Motor Show. The new X1 looks similar to the X5 SUV and doing so, dumps the station wagon look. This aesthetic update will be a key factor in winning back the consumer base, which BMW lost because of the love-or-hate looks of the 1st generation X1. The new car comes with the 2.0 litre inline 4-cylinder petrol engine, which is available in two variants with power figures of 189.4 bhp and 227.9 bhp. The diesel variant will get a 2.0 litre inline 4-cylinder turbo diesel and will feature 3 different torque outputs viz. 330 Nm, 400 Nm and the 450 Nm.

Editor's take : The interior of the X1 is a typical BMW, and the front row is spacious. It is the second row that is a tad tight on knee room, and it has to as the X1 is ideally a driver’s car.
The latest M Sport version has the same design like its predecessors, but some minor tweaks have been done to render it a new look. The cockpit section now gets an M Sport steering wheel with updated leather upholstery and contrast stitching. The cabin design remains largely identical to the earlier version, but the extensive use of dark aluminum inserts brings the aura of elegance to the cabin. Its is further underlined by the ambient lighting scheme, which is given as a standard arrangement. Both the front seats are electrically adjustable with memory function for driver's seat. Its first and second row gets center armrest featuring storage compartment along with drink holders. As part of the M Sport package, this version gets BMW Individual headliner in anthracite that renders a regal appeal to the insides. Its dashboard has a beautifully layered design embedded with a central console. It houses various equipments like an AC unit, infotainment unit along with ergonomically positioned control switches. Its rear cabin has a bench seat with 40:20:40 split folding facility, which contributes towards improving the boot capacity. Apart from these, features like a digital clock and outside temperature display add to the utility quotient of the cabin.
At present, this vehicle is available only in one variant. Its comfort department gets an automatic climate control unit as a standard feature. It is also integrated with a microfilter ensuring hygienic atmosphere inside the cabin. The seats are in a 'Semi Command Position' that provide comfortable access to the dashboard, while offering direct approach to all other driving functions. The manufacturer's innovative 'Intelligent Versatility' concept is the reason why the cabin offers better space for seating along with storage units. There are number of other features provided inside like sliding front armrest with storage compartment, floor mats in velour, interior mirrors with automatic anti-dazzling function, split foldable rear seat backrest and sports seats for front passengers. Additionally, both the front seats have electrical adjustment facility with memory function that adds to the comfort quotient. While its rear cabin gets a head and shoulder space of 1008mm and 1443mm respectively. On the other hand, it has a 480-litre boot compartment, which can be extended further by folding the rear bench seat in 40:20:40 split ratio.
Editor's take : The acceleration of the 2.0-litre diesel is good, and the power has been improved due to the eight-speed transmission that makes it torque with more evenly spread torque.
The car maker has coupled its turbocharged engine with an eight speed steptronic automatic gearbox powers the rear wheels. It also enables the vehicle to reach a top speed of approximately 200 Kmph. At the same time, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 Kmph mark in mere 7.7 seconds.
Editor's take : The 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine on the X1 is quick enough for this compact SUV, and does a 0-100km/hr in under 9 seconds. The performance of this diesel was much better than the petrol, hence BMW discontinued the petrol engine.
There are no technical updates given to this model series and it continues to derive power from a 2.0-litre diesel engine. It is integrated with a third generation common rail direct injection technology. Having a total of 4-cylinders and 16-valves, this power plant displaces about 1995cc. It is also integrated with a twin-power turbocharger that allows it to produce a maximum power of 184bhp at 4000rpm along with a pounding torque of 380Nm between just 1750 to 2750rpm. The manufacturer has coupled this oil-burner to an 8-speed steptronic automatic transmission gearbox that distributes the torque output to its rear wheels.
Editor's take : The BMW X1’s eight-speed transmission has helped to increase its fuel economy, and now it comes only in diesel variant.
The new X1 sDrive20d M Sport trim has the same 2.0-litre oil-burner, which was present in all the discontinued trims. This mill has the common rail direct injection technology for optimum supply of fuel and for improved mileage. Furthermore, auto start/stop function is another factor that helps in reducing the consumption. This eventually helps the motor to generate a maximum of 17.05 Kmpl.
Editor's take : The power produced by the X1 is 184bhp from the 2.0-litre engine. The power is good on paper and it is sufficient from this compact SUV.
This 1995cc power plant comprises of 4-cylinders and 16-valves. It is also integrated with a twin-power turbocharger for improved output. This eventually helps the motor to pump out a commanding power of 184bhp in combination with a hammering torque of 380Nm.
Editor's take : The X1 comes loaded just like any other luxury car. It gets integrated music system, BMW’s i-drive, USB and aux connectivity, steering mounted audio controls and xenon lamps.
Like the outgoing versions, this newly launched variant also gets BMW ConnectedDrive equipments featuring Bluetooth with handsfree and USB connectivity. It is also integrated with a BMW Business CD player featuring MP3 decoder, axillary input and a two-line display. Additionally, the car maker has incorporated park distance control system for rear, which minimizes the efforts required to park this vehicle. Disappointingly, there is no navigation system included in this version. However, buyers may choose the optional iDrive unit with 22.3cms color display including a DVD player and an integrated hard drive. This will support Navigation system professional and helps you to choose a right direction. As for the accessories section, it gets a few exclusive cosmetics as part of M Sport package. Those include door sill finishers in M designation, tailpipe in high gloss chrome, M aerodynamic package and kidney grill bars in high gloss black.
Editor's take : The BMWs are generally known as the driver’s car, and the X1 is no different. It can get the broad smile on your face and now even the electronic power steering means it is lighter to drive.
The company has paired all its four wheels with a set of high performance ventilated disc brakes. These are aided by the anti lock braking system that works with brake assist to augment the overall mechanism. In addition to this, it also has cornering brake control that adds to its efficiency during turns. As far as its suspension is concerned, its front axle has a double joint strut system, whereas its rear axle gets multi arm suspension system. Furthermore, there are programs like dynamic stability including traction control system, which helps to improve its traction. Besides these, it is integrated with an electric power assisted steering featuring servotronic assistance that uses energy only while steering and thereby improves its overall efficiency.
Editor's take : The safety features on the X1 are the airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP.
This model series is incorporated with several active and passive safety features, which safeguards the passengers in case of an accident. Its cabin is integrated with a total of eight airbags (including dual front, head and side), which reduces the possibility of injury. In addition to these, there are three-point seat belts given to all seats with pyrotechnic belt tensioner and load limiter facility. It also has features like warning triangle with first aid kit, side impact protection, run-flat tyres with reinforced side walls and ISOFIX child seat mounting points. At the same time, it is also integrated with security aspect like an engine immobilizer including a crash sensor.
Unlike the discontinued versions, this new M Sport trim gets a set of bigger 18-inch M light alloy wheels of double spoke design. They have been covered with run flat tyres of size 225/45 R18, which are further integrated with reinforced side walls.
