    23 March, 2013 : The 4WD version of the Renault Duster is sold in several international markets but has not yet been released in India, mainly due to the high price tag that will come attached to it. However, with the launch of Ford's EcoSport nearing, Renault has no choice but to step up and bring out its 4X4 Duster. Team-BHP recently posted spyshots of Duster undergoing testing in Kerala, with the 4WD sticker above its rear tail lights. Since Renault is already producing the 4WD Duster for import purposes, it will not be a very hard task for the automaker to develop one for the Indian sub-continent. The 4x4 version of the compact SUV is likely to retain the same 1.5-litre diesel engine that churns out a maximum power output of 108bhp and 148Nm of torque.

Mahindra & Mahindra faced a low demand in its sales in April 2013 due to additional excise duty imposed on SUVs, so it has now become important for M&M to come up with such strategies.     25 May, 2012 : Mahindra Scorpio SUV is going under scalpel and W105 is the code name given to Mahindra’s facelift project. The refreshed version of Mahindra Scorpio is likely to arrive in the year 2014. The all new Mahindra Scorpio is likely to lose weight and the auto major has designed a special project called T026 to reduce down the weight of the car by 260 kilograms with the incorporation of fibre parts which is going to increase the efficiency level of the car and is going to make it more frugal. Mahindra is likely to add an all-new heart to new Scorpio; the 2.2L engine from the Cheetah XUV 500 that churns out 140bhp-330Nm torque is likely to go under the hood of Scorpio. To increase the legroom space in the middle row, Mahindra is eyeing to increase the wheelbase.

    25 May, 2012 : Mahindra Bolero, the flagship Sports utility vehicle from homegrown manufacturer Mahindra has clocked in 1, 00,686 units in FY 2011-12 registering a 21% increase. Bolero was once again bestowed with the highest selling SUV title in India for the sixth consecutive year; also this was the highest annual sales garnered by the Bolero since it came into being. In March 2012, only the SUV managed 10,026 unit sales which is also the highest ever monthly sales till now. Mahindra Bolero sold 83,112 units of sales in 2010-11 FY. M&M’s Bolero has risen up to the seventh position in the top selling passenger vehicles in India in FY 2011-12 from the 9th position it had in the year 2010-11. Noticeably Mahindra Bolero is the only SUV to feature in the top selling passenger vehicles in India.

  • New Toyota Fortuner

    16 January, 2013 : Toyota Kirloskar Motors has announced the launch of the 5-speed automatic transmission variant in the Toyota Fortuner line-up today . The Fortuner was earlier available in the 4-speed automatic transmission version and will now be replaced by the 5-speed auto box version. The 4-speed auto box has been discontinued in favour of the 5-speed automatic transmission. Apart from the launch of Toyota Fortuner 5-speed automatic version, the company has also said that it will continue to produce the Fortuner TRD Sportivo, which was introduced in the festive season as a special edition. First launched as a limited edition, the Fortuner TRD Sportivo got an overwhelming response across the country, which has convinced the company to keep selling the vehicle in India.

    17 October,2012 : Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton, the first offspring of the Mahindra India and South Korean auto major Ssangyong is finally out on Indian roads at an introductory price of Rs.17.67 Lakh for RX5 manual variant and Rs. 19.67 lakh for the RX7 automatic variant(both prices ex-showroom Mumbai) . The third generation of the Ssangyong Rexton W SUV is brought in through CKD route and is manufactured at Mahindra India’s Chakan facility.Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton W is offered in both 5-seater  and  7-seater trims. The SUV derives its energy from a 2696cc diesel engine which comes with 5 pots and is offered in two set of tunes. The manual variant which is dubbed as RX270 XDi’s engine cranks out 162bhp @ 4000 rpm and 340Nm torque at a range of 1800-3250rpm whereas the Automatic variant’s engine yields 184bhp @ 4000rpm and 402Nm torque @1600-3000rpm, stating a difference of 22bhp power and 62Nm in manual and automatic variant. Mahindra has priced Rexton extremely competitively with a difference of Rs.2 lakh less than Fortuner and Endeavour, however the catch here is these prices are just introductory.

    14th February, 2013 : BMW has finally delivered the promised X1 at a base price of Rs. 27.9 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi) . The car is available in a total of 3 trims namely, X1 20d, 20d Sports-Line and 20d X-Line priced at Rs. 27.9 lakh for the base model and Rs. 32.5 lakh for the other two. The new X1 features the 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that cranks out 184bhp and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Refreshed features include a redesigned bumper and slightly altered front grille with a redone lower front end. This refreshes the styling of the X1 gives it a better stance. The corona rings have been redesigned in the headlamp and so are the ORVMs.

    22 October,2012: Mitsubishi Motors operates in  India along with Hindustan Motors, the company has recently cut the prices of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport with Rs.1.87 lakh and now the SUV is priced at Rs.22.56 Lakhs (ex-showroom New Delhi) with immediate effect. The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is renowned name in the SUV segment however in India the SUV’s popularity is under question. Pajero Sports SUV is not able to stand against the likes of  Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Mahindra XUV500 who are far ahead in the segment in terms of sales and popularity. Pricing against has been the  biggest drawback of Pajero and finally the company has made a call towards the issue by decreasing the price tag to change the fate of the SUV. The Pajero Sport is now going to be manufactured locally at the Tiruvallur plant in Chennai which translates into a huge drop in the costing translating into benefitting the consumers.This drop in the prices may or may not work in favor however its still early to commit either side and only time will tell if the company achieves its motto.

    13 February, 2013 : Audi launched the petrol version of its flagship SUV, the Audi Q3 today. The petrol version of this compact luxury SUV houses the 2.0-litre TFSIq engine that generates a maximum output of 211bhp along with 300Nm of peak torque. Previously, the Q3 was available only in the diesel engine option. The standard 7-speed S tronic, 4-cylinder unit accelerates the Audi Q3 2.0 TFSIq from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.9 seconds along wit a top speed of 230 km/h. The start-stop system in 2.0 TFSIq enhances efficiency, bringing it to 11.72 kmpl. The 2.0 TFSIq engine has been voted the ‘International Engine of the Year’ in its category for 5 consecutive years, by a jury of leading motoring journalists from around the world.

Also the company was fine tuning the vehicle so that Tata Safari Storme is at par with the competition in terms of design and specifications. Tata Safari Storme is largely spawned on  Tata Aria’s platform and no doubt is a better product that its inspirer. The SUV is powered with a 2.2L DiCOR engine that comes coupled with the 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. The 2.2L diesel engine is capable to generate the 138bhp peak power and 320Nm torque value the two-wheel drive option which returns an impressive 14kmpl for the 2WD option, while the 4wd offers 13.2kmpl. The interiors have been done in pseudo wood finish, while the high quality upholstery further adds more charm to the SUV. The wheel arches on the exterior have been done beautifully with new wheels, which come out to be the USP of the car.

    12 February, 2013 :  Honda Cars India has finally launched the 2013 version of the CR-V with a total of 4 variants starting with a price tag of Rs. 19.95 lakh (Ex-Showroom Delhi) . This price is roughly 3 lakh cheaper than the older base model. The 4 variants sport 2 different engines based on the trim level, with 2 low-end models housing a 2.0-litre petrol engine and the other top-end models housing a more powerful 2.4-litre petrol engine. The new CR-V line-up still does not hold the diesel engine option, but we expect it to come sometime before the next year. The base variants of the 2013 CR-V offer two transmission options – a 6-speed simple shift stick and a 5-speed automatic box. The top-end 2.4-litre engine options offer only the automatic transmission along with the paddle shift options.

  • Mercedes-Benz GL-Class

    May 16, 2013: German luxury car maker, Mercedes-Benz has now launched the much awaited GL Class in India for Rs. 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) in the presence of German Tennis legend Boris Becker. The company has said to start the local assembly of the GL Class in India at its Pune based plant from September, before that only 100 units of the car will be sold in the country, which will come as CBU. Once the local assembly starts, the price of the vehicle too will come down. The new GL Class has come up with many first-in-segment features like 360°camera, Cross-Wind Stabilization, Open pore trim, Active Park Assist, Sunroof for all three rows. The 2013 GL Class has also got better in terms of power and efficiency. Deriving its power from a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, it now produces the maximum power output of 258bhp and 619Nm of torque, improvement of 34bhp and 109Nm than the outgoing model. The power is transmitted to all four wheels via 7G-Tronic Plus Automatic transmission. The first 100 units to be sold in India will have the AMG kit as standard.

    4th-Nov-2011 : British carmaker Land Rover has pulled the wraps off the latest SUV Rover Range Rover Evoque today. Launched just after Diwali, this SUV might not attract many buyers. However, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque priced at Rs 44.75 lakh is so costly that it will cater only to a niche audience who would not wait for suitable timing and just jump on to buy the extremely luxurious Evoque with their open-ended budgets. Such is the hysteria about this sheer luxury SUV in global market that the Range Rover Evoque’s production is sold out for a full one year. This SUV is a robust and powerful avatar by Land Rover unlike its previous cars that did not attract many takers. Evoque is also the lightest, smallest and most efficient Range Rover product in India. Range Rover Evoque will be pitted against the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. Land Rover Evoque is launched in coupe and five door SUV body styles. Land Rover Range Rover Evoque will be the only luxury SUV in India to be available in three door guise, thus carving out a distinctive and monopoly market for itself.  Evoque will be powered by a 2179 cc diesel engine mated to a six speed automatic gearbox. A more powerful 1999 cc petrol powered Evoque has also seen its dawn. A caboodle of latest safety, security and comfort features are loaded on the Evoque. The Evoque SUV is available in three variants each, Pure, Prestige and Dynamic, for the petrol and diesel engines. The CKD assembly of the Evoque is scheduled to happen in India, in the nearly 12 months. Jaguar-Land Rover has however allotted a limited run of around 50 Evoque cars for the Indian market and it is from these cars that existing bookings will be serviced.

    8th April, 2013The homegrown automaker, Premier has now launched the facelifted Rio (called as T200 there) in China recently, the similar vehicle is likely to make its Indian debut as well, however we are not sure about the timeline of the launch as of now. While the engine of the vehicle has remained the same, the newly launched compact SUV has got changes both inside and out. The Rio facelift receives new front fascia with redesigned headlamps, a more aggressive triple-slat grille and a contemporary looking bumper with a new set of fog-lamps. The rear however has remained almost similar to the on-sale variant, it now features revamped taillights with integrated reverse lamps and upgraded bumper. The car has got better in terms of interior too, having received a revised dashboard, dual-tone colour scheme and better plastic quality, the cabin looks more contemporary.

    10 October,2012: Mercedes Benz India has unearthed the third generation of the Mercedes Benz M Class ML250 CDI SUV in the Indian market for a price of Rs. 45.6 lakh (ex-showroom). The SUV was launched at Mercedes local assembly at Chakan,Pune and interestingly is the first SUV from the German auto major that will be manufactured locally. Mercedes Benz ML Class 250 CDI is the notched down version of the M Class 350 CDI which was rolled out in May this year. This low priced version of the SUV is powered with 2.2 Liter, 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine that cranks outr 205bhp power and 500Nm torque value;this 2.2L diesel engine also does duty in the E Class and C Class models. The ML 250 CDI comes with 4WD option for those who want to go for an offroad experience. The company has asorned the car with Intelligent Light System, Lane Keeping Assist among others and the new  ML 250 CDI will turn the heat against Audi Q5,BMW X3, Porsche Cayenne and will try to amplify Mercedes position in the Indian car market.

    15th February, 2013 : Force Motors has launched the eagerly awaited Gurkha SUV into the Indian market today, with a price tag of Rs. 6.25 lakh for the base variant and Rs. 8.35 for the mid-level, while the top-end model is priced at Rs. 8.50 lakh. The 3 variants include a 2WD soft top, 4WD soft top and a 4WD hard top. The full-blooded SUV utilises the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen platform and also the Mercedes sourced 2.6-litre turbo diesel OM616 engine that cranks out a maximum power output of 81bhp along with 230Nm of peak torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Currently, the SUV is available in only a BS III version but there are talks of a BS IV compliant version in the last quarter of 2013.

With this engine option, the Range Rover HSE will be priced at Rs. 1.44 crore while the Range Rover Vogue will come with a price tag of Rs. 1.64 crore (both Ex-showroom, Mumbai).   • Maruti Grand Vitara

    8 December,2012: Suzuki unveiled the Grand Vitara facelift version in the Japanese market in July 2012 and since then this version in Australia,Russia and China. Finally the Japanese auto major has launched the newfangled Grand Vitara in UK. The vehicle is launched with a  full spare wheel with 225/70 tire on the tailgate which increases the length of the vehicle by 200mm on the five door models and 170mm on three door models.The cabin area bells and whistles have been borrowed from Ritz, SX4 and Swift. The seat design is trimmed and a 6.1 inch touchscreen Colour Navigation System have got on board. The music system supports CD, radio, SD card, media player connected via the USB port as well as Bluetooth streaming. The 1.9L DDiS engine is tweaked to increase the fuel efficiency and reduce environmental emission. The price is marked as £15,995 (Rs.13.96 Lakh). Maruti Suzuki India is mulling to locally produce this vehicle in future and is speculated to launch in the year 2013. Whether the 1.9L DDiS engine is going to make it to the Indian shores is still speculated, however the Vitara facelift is definitely going to heat up the already boiling SUV market.

    BMW X5 Updates

    21 September, 2010 - The German automaker BMW has launched a refreshed version of its stunning SUV, BMW X5 in India, today. The revamped version of the SUV has got new front face and new engine under its bonnet. The BMW X5 now comes in two variants i.e. BMW X5 xDrive30d and BMW X5 xDrive50i with a price tag of Rs 52.99 lakh and 69.5 lakh (ex-showroom,Delhi), respectively. The xDrive30d variant churns out maximum power of 245 hp at 4000 rpm and 540 Nm of peak torque at 1750-3000 rpm with a 2993cc, 6 cylinder diesel engine while the xDrive50i develops highest power of 407 hp at 5500-6400 rpm and max torque of 600 Nm at 1750-4500 rpm through a 4395cc, 8 cylinder, petrol engine. The BMW X5 is imported as a CBU and will be available across all dealerships in India while the deliveries will be made from October, 2010.

  • Land Rover Freelander 2

    13 March, 2013 : Land Rover has launched the Freelander 2 via the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route at a base model price of Rs. 38.67 lakh (Ex-showroom, Mumbai) . This re-vamped Freelander 2 has been improved in terms of comfort and convenience and features changes to its colour options, exterior design and upgraded equipment. These include a brand new centre console, 7-inch colour touch-screen with enhanced audio systems from Meridian, and a fully integrated navigation system. Other improvements include a passive start function, an intelligent parking brake and a rear view camera. Freelander 2 comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces 148bhp on the SE version, while the HSE gets a power output of 188bhp.

    29th-Mar-2012: Mitsubishi India added one more variant to its Outlander SUV lineup. The company has introduced a new seven seater Outlander SUV with proud. There hasn’t been any change in the seating arrangement of the five seater Outlander model, but Mitsubishi has just added a thin jump seat at the rear to adjust 2 more passengers. However, critics say that the less legroom in the third row is a bit uncomfortable for the passengers albeit the third thin jump seat can be easily folded, whenever one needs space for storing extra luggage in boot. Coming to the technical specs, the new seven-seater Mitsubishi Outlander SUV is blessed with a 2.4 litre of twin cam four cylinder petrol engine, which churns out 170 Ps of peak power along with 226 Nm of peak torque. The engine has been intelligently mated with six speed CVT gearbox, which helps the car to touch the 100 km per hour speed mark in just 10 seconds. The SUV has a top speed of 190 km per hours, which is totally impressive. The company has priced this 7 seater SUV in India very competitively at Rs 20.55 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

    26 September, 2012 : Volkswagen India loves to surprise its consumers and this time the German auto major has soft launched the Touareg SUV with a price tag of Rs. 58.5 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) however the sales will start this year end. The new Volkswagen Touareg is powered by 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine that comes coupled with 8-speed automatic transmission, which churns out a maximum power of 241.6bhp at 3800-4400rpm.The fuel efficiency of this vehicle is 12.08kmpl (ARAI Certified). Volkswagen Touareg features 4 corner air-suspensions with electronic shock absorption control, Cruise Control, Auto Hold, Electrically adjustable lumbar support for front seats, Automatic headlamp activation with ‘Coming home’ and ‘Leaving home’ function and Park distance control. The competition for the 2012 Volkswagen Touareg is heavy and the major challengers here comprise of Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and Mercedes Benz R Class but, hopefully, the car will be able to outshine all of them.

    22 March, 2013 : Nissan X-Trail, while being an excellent product, has not been able to fare quite as well as it has at the global level. Therefore, Nissan India has decided to phase out the X-Trail and will instead introduce 3 new SUVs into the market. Of these 3 SUVs, we already know the upcoming Nissan version of the Duster, where the front fascia is expected to be similar to that of the X-Trail. The Nissan Duster is expected to carry a 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine and a 1.6-litre petrol engine. The second SUV will be a replacement of the X-Trail and will possibly be a 7-seater crossover with better styling to improve its sales. Lastly, we expect a B-segment compact SUV for which there have been no details so far.

  • Isuzu MU 7

    15 March, 2013 : Isuzu Motors recently initiated bookings for the MU-7 SUV and has now officially launched the vehicle at a starting price of Rs. 23.75 lakh . This SUV from Japanese commercial vehicle maker is set to compete against the likes of market leaders like Toyota Fortuner, Honda CR-V and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. For the moment, the company is bringing in the MU-7 as a CBU (Completely Built Unit), however Isuzu has already started the process for setting up its manufacturing plant in the Chittor District of Andhra Pradesh, after which the product will be developed via the CKD route and will therefore receive a less expensive price tag. The MU-7 houses a 3.0-litre, variable geometry turbocharged, CRDi engine that cranks out 160bhp along with 360Nm of peak torque. The MU-7 features a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission based on the variant in question.

    16 April 2012: Mitsubishi Montero upgraded version was rolled out by Hindustan Motors with a price tag of Rs.7.99 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi).     15th-Feb-2012 : Volvo has bestowed a new entry level variant to the current line-up of Volvo XC60 .     19 February, 2013 : Mercedes-Benz India launched the eagerly awaited G63 AMG at a price tag of Rs. 1.46 crore (Ex-showroom, Mumbai) . The new G63 AMG replaces the current G55 AMG however, much of the G-Wagen SUV remains similar in looks. The SUV does get a more aggressive look thanks to the new two-slat grille, revised bumper with larger air ducts, 20-inch wheels and other changes. In terms of mechanical changes, we see the new G63 AMG comes with a new 5.5-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine mated to a 7-speed 7Hg-tronic gearbox. This new powertrain belts out 544bhp. The G63 AMG does the 0-100 kmph run in a mere 5.4 seconds.
