The small car segment has evolved quiet a lot in the recent years with the number of models expanding rapidly in number. Hyundai has always been a key player in the segment and its small cars are one of the best value-for-money options that one can get, be it the Santro or the Getz, i10 or the i20. The sub liter (1000cc) segment had no player from Hyundai until now, the EON is Hyundai’s newest and cheapest small car for India and it also happens to be one of the most anticipated car models of this year.
We drove the brand new Hyundai EON on the city roads and highways of Udaipur to find out what really is ‘the EON’. Read-On to find out all about this cute little car from Hyundai.
It took Hyundai nearly 4 years and an expense of more than Rs 900 Crores in designing and developing the EON which was code named as the HA. The Eon has been designed at Hyundai's development centre at Namyang in Korea. But the Hyderabad R&D centre of Hyundai has also worked extensively on this project.
We are told by Hyundai officials the `E` in the EON stands of Eternity.
The design of the Hyundai EON can be described as a benchmark in the small car segment. It has got all the fresh looks and glitz on it just in the right place. The Hyundai EON has a very sporty fluidic shape to its exteriors. Hyundai has continued with the Fluidic design mantra and the EON happens to be the second car model after the New Verna to adorn the Fluidic matter. The front of the EON is where the fluidic design begins, a neat pair of clear headlights which are extended (elongated) till the ‘A pillar’, are shaped rather nicely flowing back with the body design. You have the Hexagonal grill upfront that has become a family face since the new Verna. A nice rich looking chrome strip runs across the top of the grill with the Hyundai `H` logo in the center in chrome. The air dam is an all black affair with the slats running horizontally across the front bumper. The EON gets a nicely done diamond shaped fog lamps that are neatly placed upfront. The front bumper gives a meaty masculine look to the EON’s front profile. Coming to the sides, the EON gets the fluidic sculpture flowing in abundance here, flared and rounded wheel arches add a lot of muscle to the sides along with the nice prominent body lines that flow upwards starting from the headlights and under the window area and finally mating with the tail lamps. Another soft body line flows on the lower side of the doors. Large body colored wing mirrors get a black tone on the lower part that looks neat. The mirrors are internally manually adjustable.
The door handles also have the raised up leveling, the front door handle is on the lower height as compared to the rear door handle which is keeping in line with the flowing body lines on the sides of the EON. The side windows also the upward flow-design with the rear glass getting the shape with the body flow. The rear wheel arch also gets the muscular fluidic bulge as on the front which makes the sides look very muscular. The EON runs on 155/70 R13 tubeless tyre with full wheel caps on the Magna and the Sportz while the D-Lite and the Era get 145/80 R12 of tyre specs. Coming to the rear, the EON has a distinctive behind for a car in its segment; a fresh looking half moon shaped tail lamp that is neatly flushed in the body line looks strikingly different and lends a key sporty design input to the behind of the EON. The tail lamps look catchy and are large in size.
The rear bumper is again meaty and keeping with the front bumper, it also looks muscular. The EON Sportz that we drove comes with an integrated roof spoiler with stop lamp as standard. The tail gate has a wide rear glass that aids rear visibility to the driver and a nice big Hyundai `H` emblem in chrome is placed on the tail gate. A micro roof antenna is placed on the top of the EON which again is of very good quality and finish. The exhaust muffler pipe is neatly hidden in the rear bumper and unseen.
The Hyundai EON has been very well built; the paint quality and the metal panels are neatly done. The quality of the exteriors is of top most level of any Hyundai car, irrespective of the fact that it is the i10, i20 or the Verna. So, the EON is no exception it comes in six color options, White, Silver, Mushroom, Metallic Silver, Bright Blue and Red, we drove the White EON.
Hop inside the Hyundai EON and you would be surprised with the sheer quality and fit finish for a car this price. The good thing here is that Hyundai has done no cost cutting on the EON unlike other car makers who do a lot of quality compromise on the interiors of a small budget entry level car model. The dash is a two tone affair with the top half in black and the lower half in beige color. A very rich look and feel texture has been given to the dash. Quality of the dash plastic is in the leagues of the i10 and the i20 which is very good. The instrument cluster is a three pod thing with the temperature on the left, fuel level on the right and the speedo in the center. The temperature and the fuel gauge are marked with green digital lights which again are a first in the segment. All the three pods have a silver lining around them enhancing their look and the speedo gets its needle in red with green illumination. The EONs instrument cluster gets two trip meters along with all the standard tell-tale warning lights. The Eons steering is a three spoke design with manual height adjusts on it which is a big boon for short and tall drivers. A neat silver insert with the Hyundai 1H1 logo in chrome makes the steering look striking for a car in this segment. The center dash gets a slight triangular recess inwards to accommodate a Gods Idol which is a special Indian touch on the EON especially for India.
The AC vents look and feel good, under the vents is a double DIN MP3 – Radio unit that also has an integrated USB and AUX port upfront to connect I-Pods, pen drives and other portable music players. The EON comes with two front speakers as standard. Under the MP3 player is the AC/heater control unit with rotary knobs that have a very rich feel to them. The AC fan blower has a 4 speed setting to it. As with all Hyundai cars the EON too has a powerful AC unit that cools the cabin real quickly, the 4 speed blower is most happy on the first 2 speeds. A thick silver colored blushed metal like insert runs around the center dash and the music player which looks very neat. The EON has a extra large glove box and the point to be noted here is that the glove box has a nice tacky noise when you shut it, above the glove box on the dashboard you have a inwards recess that has been specially designed to keep a one liter bottle horizontally a touch again keeping in mind the needs of Indian customers.
The EON Sports comes with a sporty upholstery seats that is a mix of faux Rexene and cloth. The front seats get integrated head rests. There is good amount of head room and leg room up front thanks mainly to the cab forward design of the EON. The driver gets a near to perfect visibility with a very comfortable driving position. The front seats are more than comfortable for a car in this segment. The gear stalk is at ergonomic distance and has an all black round knob. The steering and the gear knob have a very upmarket feel to them.
The rear seat gets integrated head rests and is comfortable for two passengers. Support for the under thigh and back is decent enough and the seat in inclined to a very comfortable angle. Head room at the rear is good while the leg room with the front two seats pushed back is decent for a car this size. The seats are made of good quality upholstery with a nice amount of cushioning in them. The door pads get du-tone that is black-beige shades with the door opener in blushed metal silver that looks very rich. The EON comes with front power windows and rear rotary type windows. The EON gets many cubby holes and bottle holders in the door pads and in front of the gear lever which are very practical.
The Hyundai EON also gets a driver side airbag which again is the first in its class.
The EON has a large boot area of 215 liters of capacity; you want to know how large that really is? Compare the 215liter of the EON to the 165liters of boot space of the Maruti Alto and you will get your answer. The luggage area can be further increased by folding down the rear bench seats if needed.
The EON has very nice and rich, well appointed interiors on a very spacious cabin for a car this size and price. The plastics used in here are of high quality and finish. So on the whole nowhere did we find any cost cutting or compromise made by Hyundai, hats off to Hyundai for keeping the interior quality of the EON at par with the i10, i20 and the Verna. Everything in here works well and looks and feels well built.
The Hyundai EON is powered by an 814cc SOHC 3 cylinder Petrol engine that has 9 valves on it. This little engine generates 56PS of power @ 5500RPM and 76 NM of torque @ 4000RPM. We are told that this is the same i10 engine with one cylinder chopped off in the interest of fuel efficiency. This 800cc engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox.
Start the EON and you notice the 3 cylinder engine coming to life, there is not much vibration except for some that is felt on the gear shifter at idle. The engine is refined for a 3 cylinder engine and smooth. Shift to first gear and the EON moves ahead in a smooth linear fashion. The power delivery is good for a 3 pot car with the engine clearly tuned for high fuel efficiency and city bumper to bumper driving conditions. You get the gear shift indicator on the speedo console that tells you when to up shift or down shift if you are driving in the wrong gear at a certain speed. Shift to the EON to 2nd and the power generates at an even pace. We touched speeds of 140KMPH on our Udaipur highway run which is a lot for a car in this segment.
The EON has a nice city driving character to it. The steering feels light and this should help maneuvering the car on busy roads. The EON feels much planted at high speeds which are unheard of in cars in this price segment. The drive feel is reassuring and not a single time did the EON feel nervous or out of composure. You need to meticulously shift between the gears to stay in the power-band of this 3 pot engine car, never the less you soon get used to this and then you can really enjoy the EONs drive character. The ride and handling of the EON is steady partly due to the superb suspension setup on the car. The EON has a nice city driving character to it. The EON not only drives well but also is calm when thrown in corners and sharp bends. The EON has front discs and rear drum that again are best in class and have a nice sting on them. The Electric power steering on the EON is a big boon as we mentioned earlier in busy traffic conditions. We found accurate gear shifts on the EON with gear ratios tuned majorly for fuel efficiency and in-city drives.
Hyundai has been a master at manufacturing small cars in India and with the EON now Hyundai betters its standing. The EON is a complete overall package, just perfect for someone who wants his first car, it has class leading dimensions and equipment level. The drive is very comfortable and something unseen in this segment. Hyundai has done a very fine job in making the EON as a class leading product with many features offered for the first time in the segment. Hyundai claims a fuel efficiency of 21.1kmpl which again makes it the segment leader.
The EON is easily the best car now in the segment with prices starting at Rs. 2.69lakhs Ex Showroom Delhi. There is nothing much that Hyundai can go wrong with the EON, everything is just perfect. Superb quality exteriors and interiors, a very catchy design element and a potent and efficient 815cc engine making the EON the best buy in the Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh segment currently.

The Hyundai Eon is worthless car, Problems 1) The car is hell lot of vibration 2) the milage is NOT MORE THEN 13kmpl in highway and JUST 6-8kmpl in city . 3) Eon is a tin box car. 4) ENO will bump like bull car 5) Eon cannot the the pickup with 5 passanger with a/c on. 6) The worse thing if you take LPG virent, the service station will said sir this is LPG CAR it will happen for any problem. This mean YOU ARE LOOTED TO HAVE HYUNDAI EON.
Totally disagree with u. Eon has got superb handling in corners and sharp bends. I am getting fuel efficiency of 20 km per litre in highway and 12 kpl in city. Very nice car in this price range. you cannot compare it with swift or i 20 .i am fully satisfied.Only negative u can say is slightly underpowered and gear lever vibration.
It's superb car, no doubt. The mileage is very good as compare to other cars. It is giving 20 km/ltr for me on highway and 17 in city. LPG is an best option as it is built by Hyundai and mileage is also amazing, 20 Km/ltr...AC is also superb...excellent pickup even on LPG...For small family it is an best option and reliable...i m enjoying.

Rahul, Alto K10 is 1000 cc engine with 3 cylinder with cable type gear shift, the power of EON will be 800 (its just a competitor for Alto lx,lxi).
Eon stands behind alto in all parameters other than style
Its got an air bag too. The quality of interiors is superb. Its a mixture of safety and style. Still did not test drive it, so cant comment on its performance. But in ideling the cabin was silent. Unlike Hyundai cars, its engine was not super silent. Till that much i can say about the engine. The dash is a master piece. No car has such a superb dashboard panel even in one lack above segment;-).
i take test drive, outher feature and look is very good. but engine performance (gear noice) is too much. its ifect to engine life.

Hi Kiran...my pleasure Magna (O) is a great value no doubt. It's a great city car and occasionally on highway too, very easy to drive and gives a great feel. Stability is also good and you also wont complain about fuel efficiency. Just one thing I want to know how much it is costing you on road. If it is close to Chevrolet Beat then you can also consider that because it is having 1200 cc 4 cylinder engine with 79 BHP but its fuel efficiency is less since its more powerful than Eon. i agree its leg space is very short also like Alto with 800 cc.rear space are very short only 2 person can sit at rear seat. i think its pass in RTO 3 1.also in D-lite base model that cost 2.70 ex.delhi comes without AC and with simple glass not provided tinted glasses also only AC comes in nearabout 3 lack variant.if we trying above 3 lack model than we have lots of options.

Hi Joyanta, EON cannot compare Alto in terms of mileage... Believe me guys, I own an Alto and I get 23 KMPL on highways with AC... I was so impressed with Maruti's performance and service, last month I bought another car WAGON R, fully loaded... I live in Pune and I got top end model for 4.32 Lacs... it has everything... You name the feature and it has... (except air bags and ABS) which is optional. EON should have had rear power windows, defogger, rear wiper/washer etc... moreover, they haven't provided RPM meter which is a cost cutting and contradicts the statement that is made in above review
Yes comparing to others , the price is high but interiors of Alto , specifically maruti is not at all great . The plastics look cheap. The 800 CC will give a better mileage compared to i10 mileage.Seeing the rocketing price of petrol,mileage for ay new car is definitely a concern. This Car is well suited for City Driving if it gives a proper mileage of 15-16 at least with AC on.Overall a nice car,I am planning to book one but it would have been good if the top end was within 3.5-3.6 Lakhs.

I think its not just over priced compared to the Alto but also very SHORT ON FEATURES, they have just concentrated on style nothing else, there is tremendous vibrations from the engine, I went to a few dealers for a Test Drive but they claim that they have not yet recd the Test drive car, they are also very disappointed with the noise and complete lack of rear space and overall features. VERY COSTLY for its segment. and it worries me more what the maintenance costs would be. Not at all a good buy

Looks great. It will be the best small car if what is claimed is 85% true. Price seems to be slightly high if it has to beat its main compitetor Alto K10i.

mr. Dinesh, I think you have not read Ashok's question. Auto transmission car is not yet launched. Instead Eon is supported with gear shift indicator which i feel is as good as auto transmission wherein it shows you have to change the gear when you are at wrong speed.

Took a Test Drive. It felt vastly superior to the Alto. But Pales when i compared it with Chevy Spark with its 4 Cylinder Engine and great ride.

Eon gets its engine from the Santro (Minus 1 cylinder), not the i10. And it produces 54ps.

Price seems to be high in comparison of ALTO, but look is very dashing in this segment.
I had a look over Eon, it looks beautiful,If you have patience then wait for at least for one more month to know the performance of the vehicle. Not sure about mileage...But it rocks the style in this segment... but price is too high on high end variant.. price is almost equal to Wagon-R (discounted price).....It suits only for city drives for 2 2 family max....Rear leg space is a constraint.....Dash board and interior is amazing... Ultimately this CAR has to prove in the market for its performance and efficiency... all the best for Eon...
Dear Mr. Ganesh, I am exactly of the same opinion. I am also trying to compare with wagonR. The price is same as discounted price of wagonR. I would also like to wait for a month or two for performance. During test drive, i have felt some vibration. While seating at rear seat, the outside visibility for a person is less because of new look window which is short in height like santro, wagonR etc. the leg room at rear is also not that much comfortable. I have not done test drive on wagonR but. Whats your suggestion?
for 814cc car cost is too much high. secondly this car yet to prove it's performance. Thus paying for this car is still a gambling.
Sanjay, I own a Wagon R VXI, its awesome with all features, it costs exactly 4,31,848 rupees in Pune. I am 5'10 and I can comfortably drive the car without having problem to back seat passengers. I would recommend go for Wagon R... Sheer driving comfort for long and city driving

The options available for different variants are O.K.The legspace for the rear seat is a little less.The front turning indicator lamp may not be visible while the headlight is on.Otherwise it is good car in its segment.

EON looks very good and much better than alto.i booked magna for Rs.4 lakhs on road in Coimbatore.If it gives atleast 18 km in city it will easily become the market leader.
I got Magna(O) yest for weekend driving & felt its way better than other small cars on road in todays scenario with best of features in its segment.

I had a test ride of Eon and had also booked it before launch and after the test ride i dont found the car exiciting at all no driving pleaseure. The car has a very bad pickup and no driving pleasure I'll suggest you to please take a test ride before booking the car,

Really a good car... External and internal features are great.. Drive too is good... Alto has no comparison to this... Tall people will struggle to sit it drivers seat in Alto. Leg space in back too is poor in Alto.. If you are buying Eon as city car, that will be a great choice. Hyundai is reliable. But I have doubts about the fuel efficiency that they claim...

After having a test drive of the car, I strongly believe that it is a very nice entry level car, but those who will be owing and drivng will have a feel of driving a more expensive car both in and out. That will be the best part about EON. As far as price is concerned it is obviously expensive than Alto, but it is somewhat justified by the overall package (Looks, Interiors, Space and Superior finishing) that one gets.

I had a test-drive of the Eon model a week ago for one of my friends who sought my opinion on the car. I honestly felt that the engine was struggling on a decent slope and the engine harshness was apparen as it was grunting for a climb on a gradual slope at a speed of 50 km/h even on a third gear! I have driven both Maruti Alto and 800 models before and from my experience, I found the Eon's performance to be not so impressive in terms of its pulling and acceleration compared to it's 800 cc counterparts! Besides, I found the rear leg-room to be too crunchy while the rear suspensions to be too hard at potholes. The price is too high compared to it's Maruti 800cc counterparts running on the roads! Your review team was dwelling only on it's cosmetics and flucidic shapes and has not committed anything on it's fuel efficiency! I am owning a Hyundai Santro car and I am a satisfied customer as far it's ergonomics, fuel efficiency and it's boot volume! Overall, it is rather a disappointment from the Hyundai stable! It certainly needs refinements to be done both on it's engine and in the interior volumes! Your review team's assessment of the new model demands more balance and introspection!

Looks is superb, space is also seems to be good compare to maruti 800 & Alto but engine power is less for hilly terrain road condition. After test drive only I can suggest its stability and performance.
I had test drive EON Mgna and waited for month,for this after i sold my maruti 800.But i felt sorry for its price, not sufficient space for rear leg stretch, not sufficient pull when accelerated if 5 persons payload as compared to Alto K10,only 4cm more height than Alto k10, but there is more space for luggage.Those who need good looking,luxury car type can go for it.I am noton EON,booked Alto K10.

hay guyz.....i m from kashmir....i brought the era variant of eon car...i driven some 16 kms just before and it is nevertheless a brilliant hyundai car .....its little noisy,dont know iz it matters for u or not but when v already know that disel carz are also noisy why than most people go for the disel cars....best car and i own it today and driving feels in 814cc car is something amazing v expect in thiz segment......go for it

What is the on road price for sportz model in hyderabad
It is a over hyped cars based on the looks and the fluidic design , it does score on one thing though stable looks, One has to wonder the Alto K10 LX and VX versions are powered with a 996 cc engine which scores miles ahead of EON and even Santro is a more powerful vehicle. Alto K10, Santro and low end I10 versions would any day be better then this ride. If hyundai cute on price by 30k-50k this might be a winner

I was looking for a hatchpackfrom Hyundai family that would be nice to look having got bored by Santro variants in the past decade. True to its words Hyundai has brought out this EON elegeantly looking, beauty. Thank you Hyundai. Itis now upto Maruti to upgrade the look of its version alto to beat this pick. While the exterior of the wonder boy eon has been made to look attractive the interior space makes a feeling that you are at Home not House. I had an oppurtunity to Test Drive this Car. I drove Sportz variant. Vehile both Exterior and Interior looks are excellent. But, there was a very low engine noice audiable in the cabin, which we never find in any of the Hyundai vehicles. Moreover, the gear know is very shaky and if these two are rectified it will be a perfect and good value for money, considering the prevailing labour and raw material costs.

It is best in it's class mileage is very good with ac it gives 21kmpl. I have EON magna(o) and its very comfortable & all the features are very good.

Truly Eon Magna is rich with features, roomy interior, classic fittings, commendable rear seat leg space and decent boot space makes it class apart.
I owned my EOn Magna(0) maharaja red on 27/11/2011 @ 3.79 on road price and would like to tell u that it is delivering more than expected. Its really a car which has immense kinetic to collapse the competitors. Driving is quite smooth, power is upto the mark. Its one of the needed feature is gear shift indicator which could make ur driving more economical. The feel of driving could be compared to i10. the outer and inner finish and ergonomics could be compared to any car more than the price of EON. To compare monotonous alto with this delectable car is not worthy.... will update u much more in coming days....

This is my first car, I like my car should be fuel efficient (min 17 - 18 km / ltr ** in city like kolkata), less noisy (** I am referring the engine noise as of Tata INDICA / INDIGO, futuristic looking, bootspace as of minimum 200 ltrs to 220 ltrs, price (within 3.5 lkhs - 3.8 lkhs). Can you suggest that my choice for EON suffice this or I am missing something which needs to be reconsidered. Kindly suggest..

Hi, I want to buy my second car and I have plan to go for Alto K10 or Hyundai EON. At present I am driving (Waganor Lxi 2002 Make) . Kindly any one suggest which will best car in twerms of value of money, milage as in a year two - three times I go for long drive i.e. approx 1200 kms per trip. LAst week I took the test drive of Beat -diesel but power is below 1000 cc and boot space is also less Pls suggest .
