Tata Motors launched the Indica back in 1998, which went on to become the first fully indigenous Indian passenger car at that time. However, the car failed to make a mark in the country initially. As a result, Tata decided to sell its car division in 1999, but the decision was dramatically overturned after Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons, felt humiliated by Ford Chairman in Detroit when Bill apparently told Tata Motors that they knew nothing about cars and they shouldn't have entered the car division in the first place. Just over two decades later, Tata Motors is enjoying its most successful stint in the Indian automobile industry. The homegrown manufacturer is currently the third biggest carmaker in the country as far as sales are concerned, with a total of 8 products in its portfolio, ranging across various segments. Tata Motors’ lineup consists of two hatchbacks, namely Tiago and Altroz, a sub-compact sedan i.e. Tigor, four SUVs in the form of Punch, Nexon, Harrier and Safari, as well as an electric SUV -- Nexon EV. Tata Motors’ engine line-up consists of a 1.2-litre Revotron three-cylinder petrol engine rated at 86 PS/113 Nm that is offered with the Tiago, Tigor, Punch and Altroz in its naturally aspirated state. Tata also offers a turbocharged version of this engine with the Altroz (110PS/140Nm), as well as the Nexon (120PS/170Nm). Also on offer is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel motor, available with the Nexon only, along with the FCA-sourced 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine that performs duties on the Harrier and the Safari. Tata is currently working on introducing an optional CNG powertrain with some of its cars, including Tiago, Tigor and even Altroz. The Tata Punch SUV could also receive a CNG option soon. What’s more is that Tata is aiming to add 10 new long-range electric cars in its portfolio in the near future, with the Altroz EV likely to be the first one of the lot, followed by the electric version of the Punch.
