6th September,2012: Renault’s promise to deliver five vehicles in the year 2012, seems to be coming true with the Modus hatchback. The production ready version of the car was recently spotted in New Delhi, however the spy camera was just able to capture the rear side of the car. These images reveal that the car is spacious enough and impressive with the tall body structure. The car was spotted recently maning that the launch is on the cards right after launching of Renault Scala. Renault Modus hatchback is expected to be positioned below the Pulse, and will compete with Hyundai i10, Ritz, Figo, Beat and likes. Renault Modus will be available in both petrol and diesel variants; both the engines are expected to be the same as Nissan Micra, 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre dCi k9k diesel.
Renault Modus has a characteristic hatch appearance. As per preliminary reports, Renault Modus will be available in petrol and diesel variants. The petrol powered Renault Modus will be a 100hp and 75hp car with 1149cc under the bonnet. The petrol version is capable of producing 105Nm and 152Nm of maximum torque respectively. While the Renault Modus diesel will churn out 88 hp through its 1461cc engine. It will have maximum torque of 220Nm.
The Renault Modus will be a five-seater car and will be just under four metre in overall length. In order to make it viable for Indian roads, Renault Modus ground clearance has been kept at 120mm. Overall it has hatch looks but has a height of 1586mm which is quite similar to MUVs. It also has high driving position. Renault Modus has an overall length of 3874mm which makes it longer than almost all the hatchbacks in India except Honda Jazz which is 3900mm long.
In UK Renault Modus is available in Expression and Dynamique trims. Some of the features that Renault could preserve on the Indian version of Modus are additional cornering lights that are helpful while turning the car, Electronic Stability Control that keeps the Renault Modus on track even in slippery or low grip conditions. Furthermore, the rear side sunblind on the Renault Modus that keeps the interiors cool is also expected for India. There is also a possibility that the Electric Panoramic Sun Roof will also be there on the Indian accustomed Modus. In all probability, climate control feature is expected on the made for India Renault Modus. Besides, rear parking sensors will also be there on the Modus. However, it is only a possibility the standard feature of Cruise Control and Speed Limiter will be there on the Modus or not.
The interior of Renault Modus Expression is expected to be clad in Harmony medium charcoal color with ‘Cascade” fabric upholstery. The Renault Modus Dynamique trim is expected to have “Luxe” carbon upholstery. The instrument cluster of Modus is centrally placed. Preliminary reports suggest that Modus will have two airbags, fog lamps, Anti-lock Braking System, and Electronic Brake Force Distribution besides other stunning features.
At the first look you will not be very sure of Renault Modus being a hatchback as the car is quite elongated and looks like MPV. But it does not mean that the hatchback is good for nothing. Agile and easy to park, Modus is expected to be a city car. In the front there will be large L shaped headlights of double optic with ‘See Me Home’ option and a body color bumper. The headlights would be placed in such a way that they will seem to introduce the stunning Renault logo placed at the centre. Just below them is a grille which is devoid of chrome. Alloy is absent in the 15 inch steel wheels with wheel trims (for Renault Modus Expression). “Sweep to centre” windscreen wipers will be present. Dedicated cornering lights surrounded by black headlight enhance the beauty of Renault Modus.
On sides there is availability of remote locking with deadlocking and anti-drill door locks. Door mirrors are heated, body colored which can be electrically adjusted and folded in Expression and made of gunmetal finish in Dynamique. Electric front and rear windows will make their way to Modus. Adding to this, windows and door opening could be operated by a one touch button present at driver seat. Large tinted windows allow you to navigate your way through town effortlessly. There will be remote fuel filler on the side. Renault has spent religiously on body color door handles but metallic paint and sunblinds for rear windows and tailgates is optional.
An optional Electric panoramic sunroof with blind and auto-closure function (with sunglasses holder) will be given in Renault Modus. Lockable Roof box will be ideal for holidaying and will help to increase the boot space.
Rear wiper, rear defogger and smart rear windscreen wipers dress the rear part of Renault Modus. A tow bar is given at the lower side of rear to pull a trailer, a caravan or simply mount a bike. Ultrasonic sensors in the bumper emit a beep and as objects get closer, the sound becomes louder and more frequent.
Gunmetal front and rear protective strips will be provided in Dynamique; its front bumper is made of gunmetal to reduce corrosion; Chrome front grille and chrome tail gate trim strip are optional. Front fog lamps will be present for unfavorable weather conditions in this model. Expect extra tinted glass in rear window and tail gate of the Modus also. The headlights of Renault Modus Dynamique can be automatically activated via light.
Renault Modus is expected to be a five-seater hatchback including child seats for making children secure and comfortable. Measuring length 3874 mm, width 1695 mm and height 1589 mm in all variants the car is likely to have 1190 kg kerb weight (diesel variant). While in both petrol versions kerb weight is expected to be 1090 kg. All the variants are estimated to have 120 mm ground clearance.

Renault Modus is also expected to be a high end hatchback equipped with many advanced features. Some of the interior features include Leather steering wheel, Trip computer with digital display, Rev counter and Exterior temperature gauge. The adjustable height steering wheel will make the driving of new Renault Modus very comfortable. The car will adorn a manual and automatic sunroof in order to allow sunlight and air to enter thus refreshing the interiors.

The 1.2 litre 16V 75 petrol Renault Modus can attain a maximum speed of 163 kmph. It can cover 0-100 kmph in 13.5 seconds. The other 1.2 litre Turbo 100 petrol variant can touch a maximum speed of 182 kmph. This car can sprint to 100 kmph in just 11.2 seconds. But if diesel is your choice owing to high petrol prices, your car need not compromise with acceleration as Modus diesel can attain a speed of 100kmph in merely 11 seconds and it has a maximum speed of 174 kmph. A high performing athlete can run just 100m in this time. Well we are not telling you to compare humans with cars but still to give you an idea of what Renault Modus will be capable of. All the three engines of Renault Modus hatchback will be mated to 5-speed manual transmission gearing. An automatic version with 4 speed transmission engine is also available in UK market but Indian buyers are not so lucky to have that in the choice list. Overall, the pick-up of the car is expected to be great while driving.
Renault India is all excited about the launch of its new hatchback Renault Modus towards the end of this year. The hatchback is likely to be offered in 1.2L petrol engine and 1.5L diesel engine in three trims in the B segment of the car market. The car has a reasonable ground clearance of 120 mm.
The petrol variant will be offered with a 1.2 L 1149 cc turbo motor to produce a peak power output of 100 hp at 5500 and a top torque of 152 Nm @ 3500. The other petrol variant carries the 1.2 L 16V engine producing a peak power of 75 hp@5500 and 105 Nm @ 4250. The engine is well mated with a 5 speed manual gearbox and the 100 hp power enables the car to attain a top speed of 180 kmph. The car offers phenomenal mileage of 15.38 kmpl in the city and 18 kmpl on the highway.
The diesel variant will have 1.5 L 1461 cc engine under the hood with a peak power output of 88 hp and maximum torque of 200 Nm. The diesel motor is mated with a 5 speed manual gearbox which helps the car accelerate on the city roads with smooth gear transmission including the traffic zones to reach a top speed of 174 kmph. The diesel variant offers a remarkable mileage of 17 kmpl in the city and 18 kmpl on highways.
Renault Modus is expected to be housed with 1.2L petrol and 1.2L diesel engine range. With the 4 cylinder diesel engine the Renault Modus diesel variant is likely to deliver a fuel efficiency of 17-20 kmpl which seems to be frugal. The 1149 cc petrol engine is expected to offer 15-16 kmpl mileage on city roads, while on highway mileage of 18 kmpl. The 1.2 litre turbo petrol engine is estimated to do excellent job. Running costs are reasonable. Among all engines diesel engine is preferable as the diesels make most sense if you intend to cover long distances. Modus is likely to be mated with 5-speed manual gearbox in all variants to provide enough power on every gear shift.
The very eco-friendly technical make-up of Renault Modus leaves this hatchback being called the hatch of future. It is generally conception about eco-friendly that they are not very powerful. Enjoying the ‘odd car out’ status, Renault Modus is a power-packed car usually not expected of a hatchback car. Being loaded with multi utility features, Renault Modus also takes care of the entertainment part thoroughly. Modus is equipped with two audio system options. One is a 2x 15Watt single CD RDS radio that comes with two speakers along with fingertip remote control. Modus also has the option to have a 4 x 15W single CD RDS radio with 4 speakers and fingertip remote control. The Modus also has volume level speed function that increases the volume of the stereo with the increase in speed. There is also integrated hands free Bluetooth telephone system.
Renault Modus is endowed with an amazing braking system to ensure passenger safety that has been the French auto brand’s primary objective. The front brakes are disc and the rear brakes are drum. Two airbags are available to avoid any injuries to the occupants in case of collision. Anti-Brake locking (ABS) system offered in Modus avoids the locking of the wheels during sudden brake application. EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) helps by applying brakes on each wheel individually and avoids the wheels to spin and lose grip. Three rear seat belts secure the passenger to the seats.
As part of safety measures, Renault Modus will be offered with a remote central locking system to ensure security against thefts quite easily. The driver and front passenger airbags in the car offers a cushioning effect to the passengers in case of collision there-by reducing injuries. The Anti-Lock Braking system (ABS) and the Electronic Brake System (EBD) in the car works together to enable right amount of brake application on the wheels to bring the vehicle to stop at short distance after the brake application and maintains the car stability. The 3 rear seat belts offer enough security in case of collisions by pinning the passengers back to the seats. The steering mounted button controls enable easy windows operation without diverting the attention of the driver from the road.
Renault Modus has 2482mm of wheelbase in all variants including two petrol and one diesel version. The car is front wheel driven and will be equipped with 5.5" J15" alloy wheels in the Renault Modus 1.2 16V 75 petrol variant while Renault Modus 1.2 Turbo 100 petrol version is estimated to be housed on 6" J16" alloy wheels, additionally 6" J15" alloy wheels option is also available in it. The diesel version dCi88 is expected to have both 6" J15" and 6" J16"" alloy wheels options as well. In Renault Modus 1.2 16V 75 petrol version, the wheel size measures up to 165 / 65 R15. Added to it the rest two variants again have options in wheel size i.e. 1.2 turbo 100 has wheel size of 185 / 60 R15 84H and 185 / 60 R16 84H. Similar to it in the dCi88 diesel version of Renault Modus has a wheel size measuring up to 185 / 60 R 15 and 185 / 55 R 16. Front and rear track in 165 tyre is 1471 mm and 1450 mm respectively. While 185 tyre consists of 1456 mm and 1436 mm Front and rear track correspondingly. The Renault Modus is likely to have 120 mm ground clearance in all the variants.
Features such as ABS, EBD will be plus, hatch with multi utility vehicle features.
Renault India’s debutant MPV will borrow engines from Duster!
Renault India is rigorously testing their upcoming Lodgy; the MPV is expected to enter anytime early next year. Lodgy is already on sale in Europe under Dacia’s badge, Renault’s fully owned subsidiary. The MPV in India will compete with rising segment brigade - Honda Mobilio, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Innova as its major competitors.
The Duster has been going great guns for Renault India, however not many units of the Scala and Pulse are being sold. Renault was testing the Modus last year in Chennai and now they were testing the Renault Modus in North India.
We have been constantly reporting about Renault India’s next hatchback, the Modus, which is called the fifth car to be launched by the French auto- maker as per its five-car plan for India. Recently one of our avid readers Manit Goel has spotted the production ready version of the car in the national capital, New Delhi. However he could just manage to click the rear images as the car was probably being taken somewhere, but the images gives us a fair idea that the car is spacious enough, in fact more spacious than many cars available in the B segment, and equally impresses with its tall look.
