16th-jan-2012: Peugeot India is here with its first offering in India, which is Peugeot 508 sedan. This new sedan was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2012, New Delhi. Peugeot is busy setting up its own manufacturing plant in Sanand, Gujarat. By being manufactured locally, Peugeot 508 will be priced competitively . However, the car will be locally produced by the year of 2014. Till then it will be brought as CBU. Under the hood, Peugeot 508 sedan will feature 2.2 litre of HDI common rail diesel engine. The new Peugeot 508 is expected to be pretty fuel efficient and will produce high power thereby giving the owner an awesome driving experience.
The upcoming sedan Peugeot 508 is a large family saloon car. It was first launched in 2010 in global market; however, Indian entry is slated in the Auto Expo 2012. Being a marquee of PSA Peugeot Citroen, Peugeot shares the platform with Citroen C5 and other features with Citroen. Peugeot 508 has been voted as the Best New Car of 2011 at the Fleet World Honours 2011.
Peugeot 508 will be the first car by the company in India. With the sedan, the company will make its entry in the luxury car segment. Although, Peugeot came to India earlier also in association with Premier and brought Peugeot 307 model, the car maker had to leave due to labor issues in some time. This time around the company is coming alone and will hit bang-on. The French carmaker Peugeot has signed an agreement with the Gujarat government to invest Rs 4,000 crore in setting up a plant in the State. The car manufacturer views India as one of the most important and dynamic markets in the world and foresees to become the third largest automotive market by 2020. It is a possibility that till the facility is completely ready; the auto major could bring in the Peugeot 508 as a completely built Unit (CBU) in India.
Superb styling, state-of-the-art technology and impressive interiors are the three factors that speak out the most in Peugeot 508. Internationally, Peugeot 508 is available in sedan and Station Wagon body types and in Access, SR, Active, Allure and GT models. In India, only the sedan models are expected to arrive.
Juxtaposed with its predecessors such as Peugeot 407 and Peugeot 607, this Peugeot sedan takes on a new shape and styling. The front appearance is quite elegant signifying refinement as opposed to the much sporty design of the 407 and 607. The front is also adorned by a new and shrunken front grille on the radiator besides the daytime lights. The front grill also has chrome garnishing. The B-pillars of the car have been blacked out throwing a coupe-like impression. The tail lights have a three row LED assembly that resembles a paw. There are twin exhausts at the rear giving it the ultimate sporty look.
On the inside, the Peugeot is all the more refined. The inside cabin has much improved build quality all over with the dash. The interiors are much more driver oriented than any of the previous cars. The dash has a head-up retractable display which is placed in the driver’s field of vision that indicates information about speed, cruise control, navigation instructions and more.
Compared to Peugeot 407, the Peugeot 508 has grown longer by 10cm measuring 4792 mm in length thus enhancing the rear legroom by 6cm that can easily accommodate even six footers. In addition to this, carrying your baggage will be far easier in Peugeot 508 with a 660 litre expected boot space.
Instruments on the inside of this car are intelligent, intuitive and innovative that keeps the driver informed thus making the driving far easier. Locking and unlocking the Peugeot 508 is easier than any other car. Just keep the keys in your pocket and it will unlock as soon as you near the car. Also, in order to lock the car one needs to just rub the door handle and it locks automatically. The Peugeot also features a Parallel Parking Guide that acts as a parking assistance and indicated whether the car can be parked in the space and the level of difficulty with which the car can be maneuvered and parked.
Based on the Citroen C5 platform, the 508 takes good care of the bumps on the roads and overall driving is pleasurable. There will also be a Particle Emission Filter fitted in Peugeot 508 which helps reduce the emissions making the diesel fuel greener than ever. The characteristic Gear Shift Indicator also improves the fuel efficiency of the car.
If it has such features, how can the Peugeot 508 remain low on the safety front? The international version of the 508 has a unique Braking System with Electronic Stability Program, Electric Parking Brake, Cruise Control, speed limiter besides six airbags, headrests, Bi-Xenon directional headlamps, Peugeot’s Smartbeam Assistance and Peugeot Connect SOS system. In terms of safety, Peugeot 508 has international NCAP five star rating.

Exteriors of Peugeot 508 are breath-taking. The front seems to be inspired from Audi design philosophy. At the front, the 508 illustrates the brand’s evolving aesthetic codes with a unique grill rendered in a fluidic design and finely worked headlights with their feline look. The bonnet has chrome Peugeot badge over it. The saloon is fitted with new efficiency optic Bi—Xenon directional headlamps and LED lighting tubes give the 508 an original visual signature. Similarly, at the rear, three prominent red claws mask three rows of LED lights. The sides of the car are purposefully streamlined, enhanced by the contours of the chrome-edged windows. Side profile is the best part of the car with blacked out B Pillars so as to give it a coup-ish touch. On high speeds the two windows merge in each other and looks a large window pan. Overall te exteriors are mind-blowing.
The length of this car will be 4792 mm, width-2068 mm (with ORVMs open), height-1456 mm and wheelbase will be 2817 mm.
The interiors of Peugeot 508 are done to render exclusivity to the car. Dara Tramontane Black Cloth Trim is used for the upholstery. Peugeot is a new brand for India and a new brand has its own advantages and disadvantages. A new brand brings fresh design elements with top-notch fit and finish. Since the entrant is in luxury segment, the car maker will leave no stone unturned. The equipments will be perfect and up-to-date and this will be appreciated by Indian audience. The USP of the interiors of this saloon car is its space. The king size seats just hug the passengers within them. The car can comfortably seat four members while the fifth one e=will have to face the centre hump on rear seat. It keeps the capability to compete with VW Passat and Skoda Superb in India. Multimedia System and Infotainment System has N number of setting options. The 3 spoke steering wheel is electrically powered and will be leather covered with various controls mounted on it. Sunroof is present in the foreign version and is thought to be carried forward in Indian version. 4 zone automatic climate control would be just perfect to accord it a deluxe saloon.

Peugeot 508 can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 14 seconds and can attain a top speed of 210 kmph. Overall, the expected 2.0 litre 1997 cc CRDi diesel engine will show a great performance and drivability.

Three possible wheels size can come in Indian version of the new car. The 16 inch steel wheels will have a tyre size of 215/60 R 16 H. However, option of alloy wheels in Peugeot 508 will also be there. 17 inch alloy wheels of size 215/55 R 17 W and 18 inch alloy wheels of 235/45 R 18 W are most likely to dress the Peugeot 508 saloon.

Peugeot has been fighting hard through the economic crisis in Europe. As a result of which PSA Peugeot Citroen had to surrender its 600-acre land at Sanand, Gujarat where they were planning to set up a manufacturing unit. The company had planned to invest nearly Rs. 4,000 crore in the manufacturing unit but for now, their plans in India have been laid off for some time.
Peugeot is now ready to step into the compact sedans and hatchbacks segment of the Indian car market very soon. The French automaker is planning to challenge India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki followed by Hyundai Motors, who is the second largest car manufacturer in the Indian car bazaar. Apparently, Peugeot is expected to bring in few small cars, including compact sedans and hatchbacks into the Indian car market as soon as its assembly plant in Sanand Gujarat is ready. In its headquarters, Peugeot has already begun working on these hatchbacks.
As per reports Peugeot might enter India through the CBU route and while the company may have held back some of their investments, this is not going to have an effect over the CBU plans. Peugeot 508 was seen running in Mumbai with Maharashtra registration plates. However the interesting aspect was that Peugeot was running with regular black on white plates suggesting that the company may have already fulfilled homologation formalities. The Peugeot 508 is a 4.8 metre long sedan which will compete against Skoda Superb, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
