June 18, 2013: German luxury car maker Porsche's Indian arm has today launched the revamped version of the famous Cayman S in the country. The new Cayman is now bigger in dimensions, better in power and performance than ever. The new Cayman S now has a longer wheelbase, larger wheels and wider track, which enhances the drivability of the sports car. Deriving its power from a 3.4-litre flat-six cylinder engine, the Cayman S churns out the maximum power output of 325bhp. The power is transmitted to rear-wheel drive and the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission has been offered as an option. When equipped with PDK, it accelerates from zero to 100kmph in 4.9 seconds (4.7 seconds with optional Sport Chrono package) and attains a top speed of 281kmph.
Porsche Cayman Coupe, the mid-engined, rear wheel drive 2-seat sportser is manufactured by the Porsche AG of Germany. The two-door coupe is spawned on the second generation Boxster convertible. The car first saw the light of the day in the year 2006 and as most of the Boxter’s the Caymans are also assembled in Finland for Porsche by Valmet Automotive, the rest are manufactured at Stuggart, Germany. However as Volkswagen took over this German company, that agreement between Porsche and Valmet fell through and now the production of Cayman will be done at Karmann plant in Osnabruck, Germany owned by Volkswagen.
Cayman, the name which is derived from a reptile in the same family as the alligator Caiman, is not named after Cayman Island. Porsche Cayman is spawned on the 550 Spyder model and was developed particularly for the “Le Mans Coupe” a legendary sports coupe race that was began in the year 1953.
Porsche Cayman 3.0L variant comes with a 2893cc flat-6 mid engine which is good to yield 265 hp power with a maximum torque capacity of 300 Nm at 4400-6000 rpm. The design of the Cayman models is befitting of their distinctive, sporty character.The exteriors are wordplay of convex and concave curves and the styling has not been seen before. This translates into a reduction of fuel consumption of 15% and 16% CO2 emissions. The direct fuel injection system along with the light weight construction and an array of other engineering advancements like the Variocam Plus increases the torque yield in the lower engine speed range and power output in the upper speed range. The injection and ignition system are engine controlled.
The distinctive styling of the Cayman models is complemented by the wheel design. The Cayman is fitted with customized 17-inch wheels, the Cayman S with 18-inch wheels. A 19-inch option is available for both models. With these unique measures Porsche Cayman gets a refined aerodynamics with a low drag coefficient of only 0.29.
The acceleration of Cayman is stately and one step ahead is the braking which keep tight reins on the 265 and 320 horsepower engine . Porsche Cayman, the sporty coupe comes with four-piston aluminum monoblanc brake calipers incorporated at the front and rear end. The best in class monoblanc brakes are extremely responsive for fast and sensitive braking and no doubt required in this pulsating coupe. A special ventilation system is also incorporated that supplies the entire wheel brake with cooling air to increase the stability of the wheel in case of heavy use.

The suspension system of the Coupe is very lightweight with transverse links and spring struts at the front and rear end. The front axle and the rear axle both come with McPherson struts braking system that gives the car exceptional driving dynamics and greater driving comfort. The fast lane changing and driving in tight corners is when this chassis is at its best. The coupe comes with perfect suspension that works with as much precision and immediacy all thanks to the power assistance. The second generation of the Porsche Cayman was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show recently where the dimension modifications to the Cayman were clearly visible. As usual the new Cayman was built along the same lines as those of its kissing-cousin, the Porsche Boxster. We find that the mid-engined Cayman now sits on a new platform that provides for better weight distribution.
