Mercedez Benz, over the years, has become synonymous to luxury cars in India. No matter how many new players enter the Indian Automobile market, the turf owned by Mercedes Benz remains nonchalant. The signature cars of the company which created a wave were McLaren and the G-Class. Ever since the G-Class was first launched in the market in 1979, it was a success destined to be around for years. From the pope of Vatican to military purposes, the 4 wheel drive vehicle aptly suits the requirements to maneuver across any terrain, temperature and atmosphere. The prime advantage of the vehicle has been its four wheel drive and best in class innovative engine parameters. The vehicle also hits the screen along with the Indian automobile market through the latest installment of the Bruce Wills blockbuster Die hard, 'A Good Day to Die-Hard'. The vehicle class was host to V12 engines, V8 engines with the bhp mark crossing to as high as 600 in a few models. The latest addition to the class has been launched in 2012. The most anticipated model has been finally launched on 19th February 2013 by Mercedes Benz India in the country. The G63 AMG, which is expected to replace the equally welcomed SUV G55 AMG, is priced at Rs. 1.46 crore (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The company plans on focusing towards the G53 AMG as a part of its new strategy to give the SUV an open platform so that the interior as well as exterior design tweaks done after the initial debut in 2012 Beijing Auto Show can be appreciated better. The tweaks are not just limited to the look and feel, making it more aggressive, but even the performance parameters are improved by upgrading the gear box and introducing new electronic driver aids. The G63 is also equipped with a new V8 bi-turbo engine which provides a maximum displacement of 5461cc . The vehicle has a permanent all wheel drive making it ideal for the dirty terrain rides. The automatic gear transmission helps the rider to concentrate on the drive rather than the fluctuating gear adjustments as the expected path of travel for this SUV is full of surprises. The maximum speed that has been electronically limited by Mercedes-Benz is 210 kmph. Further customizations in the SUV can always be negotiated with the manufacturing legend.

Most of the SUV's are expected to ride on terrains rarely met by other low end automobiles. To match such environments, the vehicle is expected to have enough fuel capacity and mileage shouldn't be a hindrance in the journey. As the engine capacity increases, the fuel mileage usually decreases. But considering the power packed design, Mercedes Benz did a decent job in terms of mileage. Due to the tweaked V8 bi-turbo engine, the power utilisation is optimised just as per requirement making the vehicle fuel efficient in some respects. The 63 AMD runs on premium unleaded. The fuel consumption on urban zones such as highways is 8.4 kmpl while on city roads its 5.8 kmpl. The average mileage ranges between 6 to 7 kilometers per hour.

As aggressive as its exteriors promise, the 63 AMG proved to be exactly the same in its body and soul. In terms of power, the SUV offers a 544bhp at 5000 rpm. The power is evident in the pickup time the vehicle takes to reach. The vehicle comes with a highly efficient 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo engine which draws 400kW and generates a torque of 760 Newton meters. The 544bhp gives the car an unbelievable pulling power which just gets better with the four wheel drive offered by the G-Class. The tweaked version G63 AMG also features the AMG chassis, equipped with special coil springs and shock absorbers so that the kinetic losses incurred during the vehicle travel and successive abrupt stoppages wouldn't be left untapped and help in converting the power of engine into agile handling without having to compromise the terrain (off-road) capability of the SUV.

Mercedes-Benz has always created cars known for their speed and luxury none less none more. The company was among the few manufacturers who was successful in staying consistent in terms of performance and luxury. The pick-up offered by the G63 AMG is an astonishing 100 km in 5.4 seconds, which remains to be the best in the class considering the engine capability and other credentials that vehicle is armoured with. The SUV uses AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The first feel that one can experience in the G53 AMG is the way it turns with authority and aggressive command over the roads, no matter how bad shape they are in. The engine produces a unique hum that adds on to the whole tough look. The vehicle tries its best in stabilizing at the corners and curves with a certain firmness which might also be due to the weight the SUV's body implies on it. The pick-up offered is just a tad less than the high end sports cars but the G63 AMG doesn't have any lag in it whatsoever. No matter how uneven and unexpected the surfaces are, the SUV survived without any complaint regarding delay or lag in acceleration or engine being stagnant. The exteriors are based on the first edition of G-Class launched in the 1979. Though the design improved to suit the present environment better in terms of style and aerodynamics, there is a clear vintage G-Class DNA in the look. Mercedes-Benz sticked to the traditional masculine rigid framework instead of curves and bumps like its contemporaries. Mercedes-Benz was successful in adapting an iconic car for the present generation. The SUV consists of a sunroof and sports exhaust system. The AMG radiator grille with duel lamellae and four chrome inserts is included to the G 63 AMG. Additionally, fender flares lamps and authentic G 63 AMG nameplate on rear door are added giving a distinctive character to the body. Unlike the base edition of 15 inch alloy wheels, the AMG version comes with 20 inch alloy wheels which embellish the exteriors making it even more appealing. The brake calipers are available for the first time in red color giving the car a more aesthetically pleasing and expressive view.

The interiors can further be customized by selecting individual tones among the list of Black, Indium Grey Metallic, Obsidian Black Metallic, Calcite White, Iridium Silver Metallic, Magnetite Black Metallic, Palladium Silver Metallic, Sandin Beige Metallic, Peridot Brown Metallic, Periclase Green metallic, Tansanite Blue Metallic, Tenorite Grey Metallic and Thulite Red Metallic.

Exterior Measurement

The exteriors of the SUV are to be made keeping in mind, the environment they will be used on. Considering the obstacles and free maneuvering, the G 63 AMG is designed such that parameters such as ground clearance, wheel base ratio, etc. are considered. The kerb weight is 2550 kg according the EU standards. The permanent vehicle gross weight, which is calculated excluding additional passengers, luggage and other parameters, that is, it considers only the chassis, framework and engine weights making the whole factory output product measurement exclusively. This weight is 3200 kgs. The fuel tank capacity is 96 litres. The reserve tank capacity is 14 litre allowing the users to be notified regarding the completion of fuel avoiding emergency breakdowns.

The overall vehicle length is 4673 mm giving it a huge seating space and boot space simultaneously. The vehicle height from ground is 1938mm giving it ample obstacle clearance so that chassis would not be damaged even under the extreme conditions. The vehicle width is 1855mm which is comparatively big but considering its robustness, the width seems acceptable. The vehicle width while the front door is open increases to 2690mm. The exterior measurement should also consider the obvious accessories which consume space in terms of dimensions. For instance, when both the mirrors are included in measuring the vehicle width, it goes up to 2055mm. Due to its large wheelbase, the turning circle radius is 13.5 meters which makes the G 63 AMG a tough choice for market and other crowded streets.

The V8 engine with four valves per cylinder works amazingly in terms of the power delivered even in the worst scenarios. The 5461 cc displacement sure shows off while riding on long routes which for a moment give the illusion of being a GT rather than an SUV. The G 63 AMG provides 400kW output at 5500 rpm while the maximum speed that could be governed is 6400 rpm. The vehicle provides a maximum speed of 210 kmph which too is electronically limited. The G 63 AMG's compression ration is 100:1 and the torque offered at 2000 rpm to 5000 rpm is 760 Newton meter. The fuel preparation is done through petrol injection and the G 63 AMG follows EURO 5 emissions standard. Due to an ungraded seven-speed 7Hg-tronic gearbox and the twin turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine the maximum power output obtained is 544bhp. The pick-up offered by the G63 AMG is also an amazing 0-100 kmph in mere 5.4 seconds.

Wheel arches are carved so as to accommodate the twin spoke 20-inch alloy wheels. The wheel size is 9.5 J x 20. The tubeless radial tyres of size 275/50 R20 113W RF are covered by alloy rims and the whole set, thus make up for a great road grip and comfort that act as a prerequisites for the SUV.

The braking system used in G 63 AMG is performance oriented providing high performance at altering environment. The braking system is unique due to the internally ventilated and perforated disc brakes which succeed in providing braking performance that is unmatched by other heavy vehicles in the segment. Due to the paddle shifters on the steering wheel as a part of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, driving as an experience becomes something more than a mere way of commuting and transforms into something new and wonderful. The three driving modes with different accelerating and shifting characteristics ensure that even in the roughest terrains and surfaces the vehicle can maneuver with ease. The three modes are differed based on the front differential being used, rear differential being used and both the differentials being used. In extreme situations the differential modes can be altered successively creating an obstacle based motion so that at heights the vehicle can ride vertically at the same time on steep downward motions, it would not loose control.

Considering the journey through some of the worst possible locales for the sake of enthusiasts, the G 63 AMG took special care in terms of safety. Front handles are provided on the dashboard for the sake of safety measures so that in case of vertical descent. The safety measures are also evident in the six airbags that are strategically placed in the front, side and the window area, an ISOFIX child seat fixing point. Electronic stability control is included so that wet surfaces would not hamper the stability of vehicle. Central locking along with key less entry make the car further secure in places where theft is a possibility. The standard power door locks, door opening warning and engine immobilizer with anti theft alarm, cruise control and parking sensors are some of the features that make the vehicle virtually impenetrable. Along with these, the vehicle helps in preventing and avoiding damage by employing cruise control and parking sensors, seat belt warning lamp and other important aspects of safety. The vehicle handles tremendously well around corners and curves with distinctive power that set it apart from other vehicles. In spite of its iconic design and traditional framework, none of these seem to create a problem for the vehicle during travel as it maneuvers with ease through out.

The stereo comes with exceptional sound system that surrounds the vehicle seamlessly. The interiors are also equipped with the Mercedes-Benz’s hi-tech Distronic Plus radar controlled cruise control system which helps in notifying the obstacles in advance. Parktronic incorporating reversing camera for park assistance is used to make a controlled reverse gears in crowded areas, which is a literal blessing considering the amount of damage a vague movement can cause in a busy street. Along with these, the accessories also include but are not limited to Blind Spot Assist and revised ESP (electronic stability program).
