Acceleration & Pick-Up

Editor's take : The acceleration of the new Swift is improved and it is better than before. Even though the old car had good acceleration, and this is with the enhanced drivability of the diesel.

The car maker has paired both the petrol and diesel engines with a five speed manual transmission gearbox. Its petrol variants have the ability to zoom towards the 100 Kmph speed mark from a standstill in about 14 seconds. At the same time, it can achieve a top speed in the range of 150 to 155 Kmph. On the other hand, its diesel versions can reach a top speed of approximately 160 Kmph, while breaking the 100 Kmph speed barrier in about 15 to 16 seconds.

Engine and Performance

Editor's take : The performance of the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre oil burner are good and the engine doesn’t feel out of steam, even when taken on a highway. The engines have sufficient power in the city and even for the open road.

All the petrol variants are equipped with a slightly refined 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine that has a multipoint fuel injection system. It is based on a DOHC valve configuration with 4-cylinders and 16-valves that displaces 1197cc. This power plant can now produce a maximum power of 83.1bhp at 6000rpm, but can generate an improved torque output of 115Nm at just 4000rpm. On the other hand, its diesel variants are equipped with the same 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine, whose engine control unit (ECU) has been modified. This 1248cc power plant is also based on the same DOHC valve configuration like its petrol counterpart with 4-cylinders and 16-valves. It also has a turbocharger, which allows it to produce a maximum power of 74bhp at 4000rpm along with a hammering torque output of 190Nm at just 2000rpm. Both these engines have been mated with a sophisticated five speed manual transmission gearbox, which sends the torque output to the front wheels.

Maruti Swift TachoMeter
Mileage

Editor's take : The fuel efficiency of the Swift petrol and diesel has always been good, and the same trend is carried forward in the new generation as well, however the results in the real world aren’t as good as the old diesel engine. A new base model has been introduced in the Swift diesel, called as XDi.

This model series is available with both petrol and diesel engine options for the buyers to choose from. Its petrol variants are equipped with a slightly tweaked K-series petrol engine that has a multi point fuel injection technology. This mill can now give away a maximum mileage of 20.4 Kmpl (as per ARAI certification). On the other hand, its diesel engine too gets an updated ECU (engine control unit). As a result of this, it can now produce a peak mileage of 25.2 Kmpl, which is rather good.

Power of Maruti Swift

Editor's take : The power of the Swift has been good and now both the engines are tuned for better drivability. The turbo lag on the diesel has been reduced to a great extent.

Its petrol engine comprises of 4-cylinders based on a DOHC valve configuration. This power plant produces slightly less power of 83.1bhp, but the torque output has gone up to 115Nm. On the other hand, its 4-cylinder diesel engine has the ability to unleash a maximum power of 74bhp that yields a superior torque output of 190Nm as well.

Braking & Handling

Editor's take : With its rallying pedigree, the Swift has been a good handler. The Swift drives well on winding roads and is definitely a good pick as a driver’s car. The Swift can give the European competition a run for their buck.

The facelifted hatchback possesses a very sound braking system that promises a safe drive at all times. The presence of ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) in its top end variants further helps in preventing wheel lockup during panic braking. Its front wheels have been fitted with ventilated discs, while the rear ones have drum brakes, which are quite efficient in case any unexpected surprises spring up on the road. This Maruti Swift hatchback series also features an improved handling system. Just like its predecessor, the suspension of this refurbished hatch is very efficient. The front axle is equipped with a McPherson strut that also has a coil spring, while the rear one has a torsion beam along with a similar coil spring as well. This frame type front suspension present in it offers better stability and driving comfort on any road condition.

Maruti Swift Safety
Safety & Security

Editor's take : The Swift gets all the safety features like two airbags and ABS. These are the standard features offered on most of the B+ segment hatchbacks.

The new Swift by all means is a very safe hatch with many advanced safety features available in it. There are both active and passive safety features available to safeguard against the surprises that come in the way. The presence of dual SRS front airbags is of great help during accidents and collision, which reduces the impact and provides a cushioning effect. The ABS (anti-lock braking system) is available in top end as well as VDI trims. This prevents wheel locking in case of sudden braking and also controls its stability as well. These also include brake assist feature, which further adds to the safety quotient. This hatch unlocks automatically in case of an accident and there is auto lock, when key is removed. The intelligent computerized anti-theft system helps to track it, which reduces the chances of unwelcome guests. The halogen headlamps offer a very clear visibility to the roads and reduce the danger henceforth. The availability of front and rear fog lamps in some variants act as a safeguard when driving in bad weather conditions. The front and rear ELR seat belts are other features that minimizes the risk of injury in the event of a collision. Furthermore, the ZXI and ZDI variants are available with rear parking sensors that assists the driver to park it easily.
