Maruti Alto K10 Review

Highlights

December 17, 2014: MSIL has officially released the images of new hatchback Alto Kei . The car will first be launched in Japan on December 22, 2014 and then will make its way to other parts of the world. In terms of design, the front fascia of car gets kind of retro look with flat front and trapezoidal headlights. The new model is powered by 3-cylinder, 660cc petrol engine tuned to develop an output of 54bhp with 63Nm of torque. The engine is mated to five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. The company is also planning a sporty Turbo RS variant for this high octane model in coming months.

Overview

One of the top selling and affordable small car series from the renowned stables of MSIL is the Maruti Alto K10 . It was launched quite a few years before and has been generating incredible business for the company in the Indian as well as a few international markets as well. This vehicle has recently undergone a major overhaul in terms of its exteriors, interiors as well as the features given in it. The automobile manufacturer is now selling the latest version in a total of six variants. This latest hatchback series will be competing with the likes of Chevrolet Spark, Hyundai Eon and Datsun Go in the entry level hatchback segment. It is being offered with the company's standard warranty period of 2 years or 40,000 kilometers, which can be further prolonged for another one or two years at an additional cost paid to the authorized dealers under the extended warranty scheme offered to all the buyers. These have been fitted with their age old and very reliable K-Series, 1.0-litre, petrol mill as standard. But, there has been a surprising change to it in terms of its gear box. This small car is now being offered with the dependable 5-speed manual transmission, while there is an addition of a ASG (automatic gear box) transmission gearbox option as well. This eventually has made it one of the most reasonably priced hatchback with an automatic gearbox in its segment. However, the Auto Gear Shift transmission option is offered with its top end VXi trim only. This engine is compliant with all the norms of the latest BS IV and the emission type of this small car is OBD II. The peppy petrol motor has the ability to generate a power output of 67.1bhp at 6000rpm along with a maximum torque of 90NM at 3500rpm. On the other hand, when it is running on the CNG mode, it produces 58.2bhp in combination with a peak torque yield of 78NM. This hatchback series is available with a factory fitted CNG fuel kit option, which helps to reducing the cost of running. This feature is only being offered with the mid level LXi trim only. Moving on to the insides of this hatchback, it is blessed with a charming two tone internal key color scheme. The front cabin has a smooth dashboard, which made of high quality plastic and is very smooth as well. This gives an swish look to the cabin. The AC vents have been reshaped, whose surround is now painted in silver color that adds to its classiness. In addition to this, its center fascia along with the instrument panel too have been revised to give a fresh new appeal to the cabin. Furthermore, its top end VXi as well as the VXi (O) trims also get an integrated 2-DIN music system with a piano black finish on its central console. There are a few input options and four speakers as well, which helps in distributing the sound equally all over. The external appearance of this hatchback series has a combination of design cues that are taken from their other top selling hatchback models, which are the Alto 800 and Celerio series. Overall, the company designers have done a splendid job with the outside cosmetics, which is making this small car look quite attractive. Its front facade has a wing shaped headlight cluster and a redesigned radiator grille with a broad chrome strip. While below this the bumper is quite large with an air dam that helps in cooling the engine, which further has a provision for incorporating a couple of fog lamps in it as well. The sides have been bestowed with pull type door handles and external wing mirrors, which are either black or body colored depending on the variant opted for by the customer. The wheel arches have been neatly carved out and are fitted with a set of 13-inch steel rims with full wheel caps, which are further covered with a set of robust radial tyres. While, the rear profile has a clear lens based tail light cluster along with side turn indicators and a well curved bumper. As far as its comfort and safety aspects are concerned, this latest version gets all the standard features, which are expected to be fitted in an entry level hatchback series. The insides are decked up with functions like a proficient air conditioning system with heater, sun visors for both the front occupants, a cabin light, cup holders and internally adjustable outside mirrors as well. On the other hand, it is bestowed with numerous protective aspects like a collapsible power steering wheel, 3-point seat belts for all the passengers and a headlight leveling device as well. In addition to these, the car maker is offering its VXi (O) trim with a driver airbag and a pair of front fog lamps fitted in the bumper, which further improves the safety quotient. However, the most important aspect about this hatchback is its improved head space, which provides a comfortable traveling experience for all the occupants. Last but not the least, its braking and suspension system is also quite reliable and takes care of the bumps and potholes, which are always troublesome to any passenger, while on the move. All these internal features and exterior cosmetics put together has shaped up this hatchback series into a prized possession, both for the company as well as to its owner.

Exterior

Exteriors

The outer appearance of this hatchback is very well taken care of by the designers. Its every detail is neatly carved and adds to the overall image. This series is made to look splendid and hence a lot many features are decorated onto its body. The front fascia is furbished with a grille, which is quite wide and gives a unique appeal. It is painted in chrome for brightening the frontage, which is not offered in the base trim. The bumpers that are at front as well as at the rear are layered in the body color. This enhances the overall image and also make it look much more polished. The side profile is much more decent with its outside door handles in the body color. This feature is available only to the top end variant. Both the higher variants have the B-pillars in black, which not only looks diverse, but also adds trendiness to the sides of this hatchback. The full wheel covers that are covered to the steel wheels are very stylish and this is offered in the top variants. And then, the VXi optional is designed to have side moudings that enhance the overall image altogether.

Interior

Interiors

Editor's take : The Alto is the bread-and-butter car for Maruti Suzuki and has very basic interiors. The space on the inside isn’t as good as the competition and the feel of the plastics isn’t that great. But the quality of the plastics is decent and things don’t fall apart.

The interior design of this cabin is a result of a great effort by the manufacturers and is furbished with a lot of efficient equipment. The seats that are integrated into the cabin are very comfortable. This compartment has a seating capacity of around four occupants in the CNG option variant and in the rest of the variants, it is offered to capacitate about five occupants. There is an instrument cluster that is incorporated in the cabin and this is embedded with a lot many notifications. A tachometer too is offered in the top end trims for further assistance. The VXi manual transmission variant is offered with a shift up indicator while the VXi is provided with a gear shift digital display. All the variants are incorporated with a dial type climate control system. An accessory socket is provided to the top two trims which can be utilized in case of a need to charge electronic devices. There is a driver's seat belt warning lamp that is given in the instrument panel and there is a digital clock that is offered as well. The dashboard too is of good plastic and has a scratch proof finishing to it. All the variants are fitted with sun visors which is provided both for the driver as well as to the co-driver. The top end trims are additionally offered with a vanity mirror attached to the passenger visor for further comfort. As a standard feature, a courtesy lamp is fitted into the cabin and this additionally has a three position facility to it. There is a front console that is integrated in the cabin and this has a lot of storage capacity within it. And further, this console holds two cup holders for further convenience. The higher end variants have a parcel tray that can capacitate a lot of handy stuff. The instrument panel that is integrated into the dashboard is layered in piano black. This is additionally decorated with garnish in order to make it look more appealing. Both the top end trims, VXi and VXi Option are decorated with silver accents to most of the interior elements. These include the side louvers, door trim armrest, instrument cluster garnish, console ring garnish, all the inside door handles and steering wheel. All these being layered with silver accents, the entire cabin in these trims are made to look very rich and bright.

Interior Comfort:

Quite a lot of features are incorporated in this series for the sake of providing comfort to the passengers and a great convenience to the driver. In order to regulate the cabin's temperature, an air conditioning unit is integrated to all the variants and this has its vents well placed in the compartment in order to circulate the temperature well enough. Apart from the base trim, others have been offered with a power steering facility that is of great advantage to the driver. This feature helps in reducing the driver's input in the overall effort that needs to put into the driving. The VXi and VXi option trims are integrated with an audio unit that can support various players. It comprises of a CD and an MP3 player and along with these, there is a USB port too made available. There is also a radio tuner that is supported by an antenna fitted onto the roof. Two speakers are offered for the sake of distributing the sound amongst the cabin. The VXi option has keyless entry which is again of great advantage to the driver. A central door locking is provided to the both the high end trims and this can also be considered as a safety function apart from just convenience. These trims additionally have power windows to the front doors. Furthermore, these trims have a key-off reminder that is audible and a headlamp-on warning buzzer too. Besides the entry level variant, other trims are incorporated with a tailgate opener which is an effort evader for the driver. The base trim has been fitted with an outside rear view mirror on the right hand side alone, whereas the middle variant is fitted with an external mirror on right hand side that can be adjusted from inside. On the other hand, both the top end trims are integrated with external mirrors that are fitted on both the sides which can be internally adjustable.

Interior Measurements:

The cabin is arranged in a way to provide maximum space between the seats in order to provide space between the shoulders. A generous wheelbase enabled to have legroom that avoids friction and offers great convenience to all the occupants. It has a fuel tank capacity of about 35 litres. A boot compartment space of around 177 litres is offered which can be further increased by folding the rear seat.

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Editor's take : The acceleration produced by K10 is good and is as good as B+ hatchback.

Its manual transmission as well as the automatic gear shift variant can breach the 60 Kmph mark in about 5.3 seconds. Whereas the CNG trim takes about 7 to 8 seconds to reach this mark from scratch. A top speed of around 135 to 140 Kmph can be reached by this hatchback series.

Engine

Engine and Performance

Editor's take : The K10 engine on the Alto is frugal and also has good performance. The K10 is a stonker of a performer and sprint runner

A 1.0-litre, K-series petrol engine is integrated into this series which has a capacity to displace around 998cc. It is equipped with three cylinders and twelve valves that are based on the standard double overhead camshaft valve configuration. This motor is incorporated with a multi point fuel injection fuel supply system that enables to deliver a mileage of around 24.07 Kmpl on highways and 20 Kmpl in the cities. This has a capacity to produce a maximum power of about 67.1bhp at 6000rpm and can generate a peak torque output of about 90Nm at 3500rpm. The CNG option can deliver about 32.26 Km/Kg. Under this CNG mode which is offered to the LXi variant alone, it can generate a maximum power of 58.2bhp at 6000rpm and 78Nm at 3500rpm. An efficient five speed manual transmission gear box is offered for all the variants except for the VXi trim. This trim is incorporated with an auto gear shift transmission.

TachoMeter

Mileage

Editor's take : Despite being a 1.0-litre engine, the K10 returns a good fuel efficiency figure. This is thanks to the K-Series engine series from Maruti Suzuki.

This series is equipped with a K10B petrol engine and it is based on a multi point fuel injection system. This enables to deliver a fuel economy of about 22 Kmpl under city conditions and on the highways this increases to about 24.07 Kmpl. Braking & Handling

Editor's take : The ride on the Alto is soft, yet most of the jolts filter into the cabin, due to the small tyre size. The handling of the Alto is good enough and even zipping through busy streets isn’t difficult.

This series is equipped with an efficient braking mechanism as well as proficient suspension too. The front wheels are fitted with a set of ventilated discs and its rear wheels are fixed with the standard drum brakes. The suspension comprises of gas filled McPherson strut to its front axle and its rear axle is fitted with three link rigid axle type system. The steering system is power assisted which is highly responsive and it has a minimum turning radius of about 4.6 meters.

Safety

Safety & Security

Editor's take : The Alto misses out on features like dual airbags, and at the moment only Alto 800 and Eon have these features as optional.

This hatchback series have been equipped with quite a lot of safety aspects, which will certainly ensure proper protection and safety for its occupants as well as of the vehicle. The top end VXi (O) comes fitted with a driver airbag as optional, which further adds to the safety quotient. Pros

1. Affordable price range that suits the masses.

2. Exterior cosmetics and internal aspects are refined.

3. Addition of the automatic gear box will certainly boost its sales.

4. Spare parts and maintenance cost is quite reasonable.

5. The mileage is at par with other contenders in this segment.

Cons

1. Absence of alloy wheels even in its top end version.

2. Lesser ground clearance can be a hindrance sometimes.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 AMT - Expert Review
Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 AMT - Expert Review Expert Review
Maruti, is a household name in India. In fact, in remote parts of the country, the term ?Maruti? is synonymous with ?car? - much like ?Xerox? is to ?photocopy?. The Maruti 800 was consistently India?s highest selling car for years together. Outselling the competition combined at times. Everyone in the country has been associated with a Maruti. Either they?ve owned it, learnt driving on it, their neighbors had it or broke the windscreen on one while playing cricket. They were everywhere! The Alto was the spiritual successor to the Maruti 800, filling in its rather big shoes ever since September 2000. Carrying the weight of the car that put India on wheels is no mean feat. But the Alto did it ever so gracefully, becoming India?s largest selling car in the process. [read more]
