Can an electric car achieve an acceleration of 0 to 100 kmph in mere 1.79 seconds? Well yes, as the students from ETH Zurich and Lucerne University Applied Sciences and Arts, have built an electric car which has broken the previous world record for electric cars acceleration. The previous record of 2.134 seconds was held by an electric car built by Delft University of Technology.

The electric car named ‘Grimsel’ smashed the previous world record by achieving the 100kmph mark in 1.785 seconds. The car achieved the record space in less than 30 meters. The vehicle is Formula Student electric car and is developed in less than a year by a group of 30 students. The record was set at a military airfield in Dübendorf as a part of the recent Formula Student international competition at a military airfield in Dübendorf. With more than 500 teams participating, it’s the largest competition in the world for engineers.

The weight of the car was maintained to 168 kg, thanks to carbon fibre construction. Since the car was so light weight, it developed a max power of about 200 hp with an enormous torque of 1630Nm. With four specially designed wheel hub motors, the power is transmitted to all the wheels. To ensure that car gets maximum acceleration, it uses traction control and torque distribution control for each wheel.
