January 15th, 2014: Volkswagen India has launched a new variant, the beefed up version of Polo hatchback, the Cross Polo . Featuring the same 1.2-litre petrol mill that puts out 74bhp and 110Nm, the new trim is christened as Cross Polo 1.2 MPI. Volkswagen has priced the crossover at INR 6.94 lacs (ex-showroom Mumbai) and its bookings are open from today. The Cross Polo competes against the likes of Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and soon-to-be launched Hyundai Elite i20 Cross.
Volkswagen Motors is German auto major, which has established itself in all over the world. It has a magnificent fleet of cars in the Indian car market. Among them Volkswagen Cross Polo is one of the most peppy and captivating compact crossover. Earlier it is being sold with diesel engine only but the company has recently rolled out a petrol variant for increasing the sales. This hatchback has been crafted for car enthusiasts, who prefer sporty and aggressive looking vehicles. It is competing against the likes of Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and others in this segment. The exteriors of this vehicle have been fitted with a lot of styling aspects, which makes it look captivating. The manufacturer is offering this crossover with a standard warranty of two years or unlimited Kilometers. At the same time, the owners can also avail an extended warranty of one year or 80000 Kilometers at a nominal cost paid to authorized dealer.
The company has given this Volkswagen Cross Polo model series an aerodynamic body structure. Its exteriors have been done up with flamboyance and fitted with some exciting features. Starting with the front fascia, it has bold radiator grille, which has a couple of horizontal positioned chrome plated slats. It is embossed with a prominent company logo in the center. This grille is surrounded by a trendy headlight cluster, which is powered by halogen lamps and side turn indicator. Just below this, it has a dual tone bumper that has been trimly designed and has a wide perforated black matte colored air dam for cooling the engine faster. This air dam is flanked by a pair of bright round shaped fog lamps, which further enhances the visibility of the driver. Ed's Take : The interiors of the Cross Polo are the same like the Polo. The rear seat has less space especially the knee room if you are a tall person.

It is equipped with well cushioned seats, which are covered with premium upholstery. These seats provide ample leg room for all passengers that gives a comfortable driving experience. At the same time, the driver seat has electric adjustment function and it comes with proper lumbar support. Its dashboard is made up of high quality scratch resistant plastic, which enhances the look of the cabin. This model series has a spacious internal cabin owing to its wheelbase of 2469mm. It has a large boot compartment of 560 litres, which can be further increased to 820 litres by folding its rear seat. It also has a reasonably good fuel tank, which can store about 45 litres. This vehicle comes with front and rear legroom of 1042mm and 824mm respectively. While its front headroom is 970mm and rear is 943mm, which is quite good.
Ed's Take : The acceleration of the Cross Polo is decent, and it doesn’t do justice in city driving.
Its both petrol and diesel engines are cleverly mated with a five speed manual transmission gear box, which sends the engine power to its front wheels. It allows the diesel engine to zoom toward a top speed in the range of 160 to 165 Kmph. At the same time, it can cross the speed mark of 100 Kmph in close to 14.4 seconds. On the other hand, its petrol engine can cross this speed mark in around 12 seconds and it can achieve a maximum speed of 170 Kmph approximately.
Ed's Take : The performance of the Cross Polo could have been better. The engine has a good amount of turbo lag and this can be felt.
As said above, this compact crossover series is available in both petrol and diesel engine options for the buyers to choose from. Its 1.2-litre, in-line petrol engine comes with a displacement capacity of 1198cc. It carries four cylinders and can churn out a maximum power of 73.9bhp at 5400rpm in combination with a peak torque of 110Nm at just 3750rpm. It is incorporated with a multi point fuel injection supply system, which allows the it to deliver about 16.47 Kmpl. While its 1.5-litre TDI motor can displace 1498cc. It is integrated with four cylinders and 16-valves using double overhead camshaft based valve configuration. It has the ability of returning a peak power and torque outputs of 88.7bhp at 4200rpm and 230Nm between 1500 to 2500 respectively. Both these engines are mated with a five speed manual transmission gear box, which sends the engine power to its front wheels. With the help of a common rail based direct injection fuel supply system, it can generate close to 20.14 Kmpl on the highways.
Ed's Take : The mileage of the Cross Polo is similar to the 1.2-litre diesel engine on the Polo, highly-efficient.
The diesel engine of this crossover is incorporated with a common rail based direct injection fuel supply system. It allows this vehicle to generate 20.14 Kmpl on the bigger roads and about 16 Kmpl in the city traffic conditions. At the same time, its petrol engine is integrated with a multi point fuel injection supply system. It has the ability of producing 12 Kmpl in the city traffic conditions. While its mileage goes up to 16.47 Kmpl on the highways and it has also been approved by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India).
Ed's Take : The power produced by this oil burner is good on paper as producing 75bhp from a 1.2-litre diesel is good.
Its 1.2-litre power plant can churn out 73.9bhp of power at 5400rpm in combination with 110Nm of torque output at 3750rpm. While its 1.5-litre diesel power plant has the ability of generating a maximum power of 88.7bhp at 4200rpm along with a peak torque output of 230Nm between 1500 to 2500rpm, which is quite good for this segment.

Ed's Take : The Cross Polo gets steering mounted audio controls with Bluetooth connectivity on the integrated music system.

It is equipped with USB interface, Aux-in port, CD/MP3 player along with four speakers, which enhances the ambiance of its cabin. At the same time, the owners can also customize this vehicle with various exteriors as well as interior aspects, which gives it a decent look. The list of features includes navigation system, touchscreen, navigation system, rear view camera, floor mats, body graphics, a set of alloy wheels and many other such features.
Ed's Take : The handling characteristics of the Cross Polo are brilliant as it based on the Polo platform that is also used in the Polo Cup Racing.
This crossover has been bestowed with a proficient braking and superior handling mechanism that works exceptionally well in every conditions. The front axle is assembled with a McPherson strut along with stabilizer bar. Whereas, the rear axle has been bestowed with Semi Independent trailing arm type of suspension mechanism. On the other hand, front wheels are fitted with a set of ventilated disc brakes, while its rear wheels have been assembled with conventional drum brakes. This braking mechanism is further enhanced by ABS (anti lock braking system) that prevents locking of wheels and reduces the risks of skidding on slippery roads. The company has given it a speed sensitive steering wheel, which is quite responsive. It comes with tilt adjustment function that makes it easy to handle even in peak traffic conditions.
Ed's Take : The safety features on the Cross Polo are airbags and ABS.

It has an advanced engine immobilizer with floating code for preventing the vehicle from any unauthorized entry. Apart from these, it is incorporated with front under-body guard, height adjustable headrests (front and rear), emergency exit, front and rear fog lights, dual frontal air bags, pinch guard safety for all 4 power windows, high mounted third brake light, interior rear view mirror and many more sophisticated functions. It comes with anti lock braking system along with electronic brake force distribution as standard in diesel variants for preventing it from wheel locking on slippery roads.
The wheel arches of this vehicle are fitted with a set of 15-inch alloy wheels, which are covered with high performance tubeless radial tyres of size 185/60 R15 that provides superior road grip on any road conditions. Volkswagen has introduced a new variant of its Cross Polo, the beefed up version of its Polo hatchback. Priced at INR 6.94 lacs (ex-showroom Mumbai,) the all-new Cross Polo 1.2 MPI features a 1.2-litre petrol engine that puts out 74bhp and 110Nm of peak torque. The Cross Polo is Volkswagen’s competes against the likes of Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and soon-to-be launched Hyundai Elite i20 Cross.
Volkswagen has showcased the new Cross Polo for this model year in Europe. Though it hasn’t been a big success in the Indian market, we believe this product has some good potential if some changes are made to it. The current Cross Polo has the same ground clearance and tyre size like the current Polo.
Volkswagen is all set to unveil the facelifted Cross Polo at the upcoming 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The Cross Polo is basically a beefed up version of the regular Polo hatchback. The updated model gets changes both exterior and interior.
