Toyota Kirloskar Motor (KTM) launched one of its most innovative creation at an event in Bangalore, Toyota Etios sedan and the hatchback, Toyota Etios Liva was launched lately. The delivery of Toyota Etios saloon version started from January 2011. This compact car, Toyota Etios, targets masses in India. As per the company, to develop this people's car, over 2,000 engineers were engaged to give it small size without compromising on the eye-catching interior, power, performance and higher fuel economy. At the Auto Expo 2010, the company displayed hatchback and sedan models of Toyota Etios and now finally the saloon version is launched whereas the hatchback version of Etios named Toyota Etios Liva is unveiled. The launch of this hatchback version is planned in the month of April next year. The company had worked hard to make Toyota Etios affordable and wished to use only domestic components for the same.

Toyota has promised to provide world class technology and quality with the Toyota Etios. The design concept for the car is Bold Simplicity which is referred to affordable luxury and functionality in one machine. The car will have to compete with the likes of Maruti Swift Dzire, Tata Manza and Hyundai Accent. The company will produce around 70K units of the car per year. With its small car Toyota Etios, the company intends to grab a 10 per cent market share in Indian compact cars segment by the end of the current year.

This new innovation of Toyota, Etios sedan comes equipped with 1.5 litre petrol engine and a 1364cc, 68PS diesel engine. The Toyota Etios sedan's petrol engine will produce 90 PS of peak power at 5600 rpm. The engine generates maximum torque of 132 Nm (13.46 kg-m) at 3000 rpm. This simply indicates huge power hidden in this saloon from Toyota. Whereas the Toyota Etios Diesel outputs 68PS at 3800rpm and a maximum torque of 170Nm at 1800-2400rpm.

The shock absorbers at front are independent MacPherson strut while the rear suspension is non-independent Torsion Beam. The suspensions are very much similar to Toyota's Yari. The frames of the cars are rigid and strong with total weight of 930 kg of the petrol powered Etios while the Toyota Etios Diesel has a kerb weight of 990kg for the Toyota Etios GD and 1005kg for the Toyota Etios VD and Toyota Etios VXD.

The exterior of Toyota Etios is sporty and sharp. Front face of the Toyota Etios saloon looks like a smiling face of human with dimples at cheek (headlamps). Upper smiling grille and lower grille can be identical to this model. At the back, a big size rain wiper and rear hood are provided which looks very general. Both hatchback and saloon cars from Toyota have six spoke alloy wheels. Body color rear side view mirrors, door handles and bonnet catch the eyes of the beholder.

The instrument panel, including speedo and trip are placed at the middle of the dashboard of the Etios while the AC vents are in round shape. The three-spoke steering wheel comes in dual tone along with the rest of the interior. The dashboard of Toyota Etios hatchback is general while the one in the sedan's is quite appealing. Enough legroom and headroom are given in both models. As far as safety is concerned, it seems the cars will miss a lot apart from seat belts for all passengers.

Editor's take : The Toyota Etios has good mileage on the petrol and even on the diesel powertrains. The oil burner is one the most frugal engines in today’s auto scene.  

Toyota Etios petrol sedan model is equipped with 2NR-FE, petrol, 4 Cylinder 16V, DOHC engine. The engine is developed to give apex power of 90PS at 5600 rpm and maximum torque of 132 Nm at 3000 rpm.

Toyota Etios Diesel sedan is equipped with 1364cc, 4-cylinder 8V SOHC, D-4D diesel engine. The diesel engine outputs a power of 68PS at 3800 rpm and has a maximum torque of 170 Nm at 1800-2400 rpm.

Toyota Etios is loaded with lightweight materials that delivers improved anti-knocking performance, and electronic throttle control contribute to high fuel efficiency. The petrol powered Toyota Etios gives a mileage of 17.6 kmpl on highway and 12 kmpl in city . This makes it a fuel-efficient car without compromising on the performance and luxury. The Toyota Etios Diesel delivers a mileage of 20kmpl .

Editor's take : On paper, it isn’t the power produced by the Etios that amazes us, it is the power to the weight ratio that makes it quick.

The Toyota Etios sedan is loaded with a new 1.5 litre petrol engine which will pump up 90 PS of power. The engine displacement is 1496 cm3(cc) and it promises peak power of 90PS at 5600 rpm and torque of 132 Nm at 3000 rpm. It is blessed with 5 Speed Manual type transmission . Hence, we see that Toyota Etios makes no compromises with power. The engine acts as its powerhouse and supply is made smooth through smart engineering. The model offers best torque in its class which adds to its utility. The Toyota Etios Diesel on the other hand has a 1364cc, 68PS diesel powered engine. The engine is a four cylinder 8-valve SOHC engine that produces a maximum torque of 170Nm at 1800-2400rpm.

Editor's take : The acceleration by both the engines is good and there is no denying that it is indeed quick, especially the petrol.  

Toyota vehicles are known for their power, performance and reliability. And the company never compromise with its image. Toyota Etios is powered by refined engines and produces sufficient power and torque. The Toyota Etios petrol comes loaded with 1.5 litre petrol engine that develops a peak power of over 90 PS and torque accordingly. Acceleration of the car is stunning and the car zooms past 100 kmph from nil in just 12.5 seconds with its top speed as 178 kmph . On the other hand Toyota Etios Diesel reaches the 100kmph mark in just 19 seconds .

Though the front face of the Toyota Etios is sharp and compact. The upper grille, lower grille and headlamps collectively make a shape of a face of human being that seems smiling with dimples (headlamps) at both end of lips (upper grille). The upper grille in chrome finish while the lower grille comes in black. Pearl white fog lamps are placed at both end of the lower grille. Rain wipers are provided at front and rear face. Standard rear side view mirrors are in body color along with door handles, rear cowl and bumper.

The rear box of Toyota Etios is unique. However, taillight in Etios sedan is in triangular shape. The taillight cluster includes brake, turn and reverse indicators. The boot space is wider and larger in sedan variant of Toyota Etios. Exhaust pipes in both the variants are not showed outside. 170 mm ground clearance is simply commendable. The front grille is Matte Black in case of Toyota Etios J and Chrome Ornamenting in all other variants. This stunning car comes with Body Colored Bumpers, Front Fog Lamps (in V and VX version) , Body Colored Door Handles (G Version), Body Colored ORVM, B Pillar Black-Out, Intermittent Wiper (absent in G version), Side Skirt (only in VX version), Tubeless Tyres, 12 Spoke Alloy Wheels (V and VX models) and Chrome Garnish on Boot.

Exterior Measurements

Toyota Etios sedan provides best in terms of size and boot space. The boot volume of the sedan is 595 Litres . The overall length of sedan variant is 4265 mm, width 1695 mm and height is 1510 mm. Wheelbase is 2550 mm and ground clearance is 170mm. Its fuel tank efficiency is 45 Litres and turning circle radius is 4.9 m.

The tyre size is 175 / 65 R14 for Toyota Etios J and Toyota Etios G whereas in Toyota Etios V and Toyota Etios VX you will find 175 / 65 R14 tyres. The diesel cars - Toyota Etios VD and Toyota Etios VXD have a tyre size of 185/60 R 15.

Editor's take : The interiors of the Etios have undergone a major change. It now has adjustment head rest and even the quality of the product has been improved. Even though most of the changes on the vehicle there is still more scope for improvement. The instrument panel design doesn’t appeal to many.  

Toyota Etios designers tried hard to give stunning looks to the interiors of Toyota Etios and as a result a creative kind of output can be seen. However, the company failed to provide it eye-catching and eye-soothing appearance. Dashboard is a conventional type that houses instrument panel in the centre which can be easily read out by rear passenger. AC vents are at both end of the dashboard. There is enough storage space at dashboard facing front passenger. A touch-screen audio-system is installed in the middle of the console along with operating switches. Additional steering mounted audio controls are there provided for the convenience of driver.

The multifunction steering wheel comes in three spoke design. The base model doesn't possess power steering. Seatbelts are there for all passengers for safety reasons. The interiors of Toyota Etios are in dual tone which is a classic piece of designing. The seats are wide and comfy with sufficient backrest. Ample legroom and headroom is provided for easy and comfortable seating. Storage space at door pockets and glove box are provided in the car. Boot compartment is there in all the variants. Flooring is flat and sleek which also helps to sit comfortably. Rear roof lining is made thinner for ample headroom.

This beautiful sedan comes with Internally Adjustable ORVM, Luggage Room Lamp , Fabric Insert Door Trim, Fabric Upholstery, Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel, 7 Bottle Holders (1 Litre), Front Door Pockets, Rear Door Pockets, Day/Night Inside Rear View Mirror, Driver - Side Sunvisor, Chrome Accented Air Vents (in V and VX version), Remote Fuel Lid Opener and Remote Tailgate Opener.

Interior Comfort

Toyota Etios boasts of plenty of legroom, headroom and storage space which are best in its class. For driver's comfort, audio controls are mounted on the three spoke steering wheel. A touch-screen audio-system is handy and stylish. Enough headroom and legroom are provided for the driver but no footrest. In a view to provide ideal access in the car, rear doors are made large and the taillights size also helps to have wide door opening. Toyota Etios sedan has more boot space that is 595 litre. All these measurements prove that the sedan is a much larger car in its segment. Flooring of the cars is also flat to ensure passenger's comfort. The vehicle is spacious with larger boot space and glove box. In addition, storage space is carved in door pockets and central console. This beautiful model includes Air conditioner with Heater & Clean Air Filter, Power Windows, Electric Power Steering, Central Locking , Cooled Glove Box, Front Cabin Lights, Front Power Outlet (12V), Sporty Front Headrest, Pillow Type Rear Headrest, Rear Defogger, Tilt Steering, Tachometer, Digital Tripmeter, Audio System (With Remote), Audio Controls on Steering Wheel (only in VX version) and USB & Aux-in Ready Audio (Only in V and VX version).

Interior Measurements

Toyota Etios sedan is a four door vehicle in which four passenger can sit. Headroom and legroom is ample for all passengers . Back seat is much wider and comfortable in all the variants as enough room for passenger's knees, thigh and back is ensured.

Editor's take : The performance of the engine is good and the drivability factor is in place. There are no hiccups from the engine to pull at low engine speeds.

The Toyota Etios saloon is available in India with different variants. The sedan is powered by a 2NR-FE, 4 Cylinder 16V, DOHC petrol engine and 1364cc, 68PS diesel engine. The 1.5L petrol engine is built to smoke out 90PS of maximum power at 5600 rpm and peak torque of 132 Nm at 3000 rpm. The engine is equipped with dual camshaft and four valves per cylinder which ensures increased power and torque with better fuel efficiency . Here it is to be mentioned that the company has done enough home work to make the engine is powerful and fuel efficient which is good enough to give a hard time to its rivals. For the same, the engine has been upgraded with latest technologies that ensure less power loss. The engine in Toyota Etios is packed with standard pistons which might come with molybdenum coating. It is also blessed with (EFI) Electronic Fuel Injection system.

The Toyota Etios Diesel engine on the other hand is equipped with four-cylinder, 8V, SOHC engine that produces a 68 PS power at 3800rpm. The engine is able to produce 170Nm of peak torque at 1800-2400 rpm.

Toyota Etios has a tyre size of 175 / 65 R14 in Toyota Etios G and J whereas tyre size is 185 / 60 R15 in case of V and VX version. 2550 mm of wheelbase assures grip on the drive. The large tyres come with higher ground clearance that is 170 mm. The Toyota Etios Diesel VD and Toyota Etios Diesel VXD have a tyre size of 185/60 R 15.

Editor's take :  The handling of the Etios is decent, however it has a well-balanced poise for good ride and handling characteristics.

The Toyota Etios sedan is loaded with Ventilated Disc brakes in front and Drum breaks at the back which add to its safety . Owing to disc brakes, handling and control become easier. The longer wheelbase also ensures better stability on road. The wheelbase is 2550mm that is good to solve the purpose. Front independent and rear non-independent shock absorbers are responsible for butter-smooth riding experience.

Editor's take : The safety features on the Etios include ABS and airbags.

The Toyota Etios is loaded with two airbags to save the driver and front passenger in case of collision. It is the best safety measure in case of frontal collision. It is also blessed with an impact absorbing body structure which protects all on board in case of heavy jerk and collision. This smart technology spreads the entire impact on the whole body exterior, keeping the cabin safe and intact. The speedometer is placed at the centre which helps the driver keep his eyes on road. The ABS and traction control is a welcomed offering from Toyota.

It is also loaded with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), Immobilizer, Keyless Entry (Excluded in Etios J version) , Driver Seat belt Warning and Door Ajar Warning.

Editor's take : The Etios gets an in-dash music system, with steering mounted audio controls with aux and USB connectivity.

Toyota Etios, the affordable luxury car makes no compromise with its entertainment quotient. It is provided with 2DIN DVD MP3 AM/FM . The audio system is provided with remote for easy operation.
