Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the high-end luxury vehicle developed by the German marque. In last two months itself, this product has received two new variants in the form of S63 AMG and a coupe. Now, this firm has rolled out two new Maybach versions in the line-up, but they are philosophically different from rest of the variants. They both are assembled on the same line of S-Class, but the luxury they offer are truly incomparable. One of those variants are the Maybach S500, whose assembly is done here in India. The other one is the Maybach S600, which is brought to the country through the CBU route. Powering this particular trim is the 6.0-litre, 12-cylindered petrol engine. The drive-train for the former one is sourced from the existing S500 trim. These new versions can be defined as a symbol of unmatched luxury. They have been introduced as exclusive products, but the quota allocated for this year have reportedly been sold out. Everything about this vehicle is exclusive, especially with regards to its interior designing. Its has a handcrafted and exquisitely finished cabin with extensive use of hand-tailored Nappa leather with top-stitching. Furthermore, wood inserts, chrome accents and ambient lighting package are a few highlights of its interiors. As for the exteriors, it exudes the majesty with grace and marks its presence in style. The recently introduced coupes versions are two door models and yet the most stylish in the entire fleet of S-Class. While the newly launched S63 AMG sedan trim looks sportier than the other sedan versions, as it gets exclusive AMG body kit.
This model series overflows with high end luxury features and innovative technologies. As for the Maybach, one of the key aspect is the 12-way power adjustable front seats with memory that includes controls for seat shape and cushion. Another such feature is the COMAND system touchpad controller that offers intuitive access to the world of infotainment. These variants also get Mercedes-Benz 'mbrace' that offers comprehensive range of functions for safe, connected and more productive drive. It is a cloud-based GPS technology offering 24 hour support from the company's experts when needed. This vehicle has a driver oriented cockpit, where all the control switches and other essentials are placed within the reach of the driver. Being the high end model, this vehicle is blessed with an array of sophisticated features, which contributes for making the journey pleasant. There are innovative features present inside the cabin like ambient lighting system, air balance package and THERMOTRONIC automatic air conditioning system and diamond-pattern electrically adjustable seats with memory along with climate function. Safety is another department where the company has never compromised and bestowed this series with innovative Integral safety concept. It includes airbags, assistance programs and other PRE-SAFE aspects, which always takes care of the occupants in an event of collision or an accident.
As we can see, its external appearance is gracefully designed with splendid build quality down to the closest detail. It is pretty long, wide and reasonably low in height that expresses the royalty from all frames. Further adding to its appeal is the expressive lines that stretches from the front to the rear end through the door panels. The recently launched Maybach versions look much identical to the other existing sedan versions. Its coupe and sedan versions look completely different from each other. The coupe trims are designed with two doors, and have sleek, bold and stylish body structure as compared to other trims. However, both the AMG versions looks even sportier, as it has exclusive set of bumpers, alloy wheels, a distinctly designed radiator grille and extensive black accents as well. To start with the front, it has a beautifully sculptured signature grille with thick chrome surround. It is accompanied by the company's emblem, which is vertically positioned on top of the hood. It is flanked by a large headlight cluster featuring adaptive bi-xenon headlamps along LED daytime running lights. Editor's take : The interiors of the S-Class are the best place to be, or it can even be said that it is the best car interiors. This should say it all for this new flagship from Mercedes-Benz. The S350 can seat three people and it doesn’t get the rear seat package like the S500.
The Mercedes-Maybach has a lavish cabin that you can only dream about. Such exquisite is its internal cabin that offers luxury like no other. One should talk about the seating, which is the primary factor about this vehicle. Its front seats are 12-way adjustable through electrical function. A passenger can also adjust the cushion and shape of the seat to get optimum comfort, while on the move. The AMG version gets a stylish flat-bottomed multi-functional steering wheel that adds to the sporty silhouette of the cabin. While the other variants have a two-spoke signature steering wheel with glossy veneers and metallic accents. Traditionally, the coupe versions are four-seater models and they can offer comfort like no other vehicle. While the existing variants are available with an option to choose an executive seating package, which makes the rear cabin luxurious. As per this package, the rear cabin gets two individual seats with electrical adjustment facility along with massage, memory and heating functions. Furthermore, it also gets an option to increase the leg room by sliding forward the front passenger seat. This explains about the state of luxury that this model series can offer to its customers. Enhancing the elegance of the cabin is the spectacular ambient light system with mood lighting. For convenience, there are several utility features given inside the cabin like storage units, freezer, power sockets and other such aspects.
The Maybach S500 and S600 are the most luxurious vehicles designed by Mercedes till date. They have a certain amount of features that you can see in no other vehicle. Perhaps, they are the ones to be certified by European Center for Allergy Research for allergy friendly cabin with fragrance system. Another such unique aspect is its seating that has 12-way power adjustable facility with memory and ventilation and massage function all together provides luxury like no other. The remaining variants also have innovative features and one of which is the THERMOTRONIC 3-zone automatic climate control unit including separate air vents for rear passengers. They also have an advanced instrument cluster featuring a color display that provides informatics like outside temperature display, trip computer, fuel consumption, fuel gauge, distance traveled, vehicle speed, gearshift position, tachometer, driver's seat belt warning and a few other notification lamps. There are several other features, which comes as standard including panoramic sunroof, ashtray package, ambient lighting in seven color options, KEYLESS-GO package with handsfree boot opening, active parking guidance and memory package for front seats. It is also fitted with a large fuel tank with a storage capacity of 80 litres, however, the diesel version gets a tank of 70 litres.
Editor's take : The S-Class can push you back into the seat if you press the accelerator. This true on petrol and the diesel, despite the gigantic size.
All the variants in this series are capable of reaching an electronically regulated top speed of 250 Kmph, which is impressive. As for pickup, the AMG versions can break the 100 Kmph barrier in 4.2 seconds, while the S500 sedan and coupe trims can do it in about 4.8 seconds. On the other hand, the diesel version with 2987cc mill can accelerate from 0 to 100 Kmph mark in just 6.8 seconds.
Editor's take : The performance of this new engine is just fantastic. Press the throttle and get pushed back into your seat.
The S 500 sedan and coupe versions along with the newly rolled out Maybach S500 trim are equipped with a V8, 4.7-litre petrol engine that displaces 4663cc. This eight cylindered engine is integrated with a bi-turbo charging unit that enables it to develop immense power. It can churn out 453bhp of power in the range of 5250 to 5500rpm in combination with a thumping torque output of 700Nm at 1800-3500rpm. While the only diesel trim is blessed with a 3.0-litre, 6-cylindered engine with 2987cc displacement capacity. It can belt out 258bhp of power at 3600rpm and yields a hammering torque output of 620Nm between just 1600 to 2400rpm. The S63 AMG coupe and the sedan trims are fitted with a 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 engine that is capable of unleashing 585bhp of maximum power at 5500rpm and yields 900Nm of torque between 2250 to 3750rpm. The exclusive 'S Guard' version and the Maybach S600 trims are fitted with a 6.0-litre engine that produces a power of 530bhp at 4900rpm and releases a hammering torque of 830Nm at 1900rpm. All these engines have been mated with a 7-speed automatic transmission gearbox.
Editor's take : The mileage of this saloon is the last thing that the owner will consider. The S500 returns about 4-6km/l. The S350 is more fuel efficient as on the highway it returns about 10 km/l.
Currently this series is available with three different petrol engines and all of them are integrated with a high pressure direct fuel injection technology. One of which is the 4.7-litre mill that can give away a mileage in the range of 7 Kmpl to 10.6 Kmpl. The 'S Guard' version houses a powerful 6.0-litre engine, which is capable of giving away 7.81 Kmpl. We can also see the same motor in the newly launched Maybach S600 version. While the AMG versions including sedan and coupe trims are fitted with a 5.5-litre engine that can deliver an average mileage of about 10.1 Kmpl. On the other hand, the only diesel version houses a 3.0-litre CDI mill that has the latest generation direct fuel injection system. It can produce a minimum mileage of 11 Kmpl in the city traffic conditions, while delivering a maximum of 16.6 Kmpl on the highways.
Editor's take : The power produced by the S-Class is 449bhp and 700Nm. That should say it all. The 3.0-litre V6 diesel is equally powerful as it has 620 Nm of torque on it.
The S63 AMG coupe and sedans are the most powerful trim as they houses a 5.5-litre V8 Bi-turbo petrol engine. It is capable of producing 585bhp of peak power along with a pounding torque of 900Nm. While the other coupe version as well as the Maybach S500 trim houses the 4663cc engine, which is also powering the existing S 500 sedan. This motor can churn out a commanding power of 453bhp along with a maximum torque output of 700Nm. While the other petrol variants including the high-end Maybach S600 version is fitted with a 6.0-litre engine that releases a power of 530bhp along with a torque of 830Nm. The only diesel variant S 350 CDI trim houses a V6 diesel motor that can pump out a power of 254.7bhp while yielding a mammoth torque of 620Nm.
This series is blessed with sophisticated multimedia equipments, which offers great entertainment to its occupants. The most important feature is the Burmester surround sound system that comprises of 13 high performance speakers, 9-channel DSP amplifier, front-bass technology with sub-woofers and noise compensation system. This model series also features an advanced COMAND online system with a hard drive. This system also features Bluetooth connectivity, DVD changer, and a high resolution 31.2 cms TFT display. Furthermore, it features a TMC tuner and a traffic information decoder along with two USB ports and one Aux-in jack. In addition to these, the company is also offering rear seat entertainment package with two 25.4 cms color displays featuring cordless headphones.
Editor's take : The handling of the S-Class is good. It is a heavy and wide car and it shows, but once you shift to the Sport mode it becomes a lot more nimble.
The manufacturer has equipped this series with a superior grade adaptive braking technology that ensures precise and immediate response. Integrated with this is the Brake Assist with sensors that can predict the emergency of braking and applies maximum power to ensure stopping. Another such aid is the anti lock braking system, which is an intelligent technology that can pump brakes as needed up to 30 times per second. This will eventually helps to preserve the driver's steering functionality by preventing wheel lockup. The safety and handling is reinforced with the pre-sense of electronic stability program that continuously monitors the driving inputs along with vehicle's motion, especially while cornering. It will help to bring the vehicle under control. This vehicle also has an electromechanical power assisted steering based on rack and pinion mechanism that aids in simplifying the overall handling.
Editor's take : The safety features on the S-Class are probably the highest amongst all cars. Eight airbags, ESP, ABS, you name it, it has it.
The car maker has not compromised on the safety aspects of this model series. It is bestowed with several protective aspects like ATTENTION assist system, night view assist plus, headlamp assist and intelligent LED light system. This model is also bestowed with pre-safe aspects like eight airbags and seat belts, which reduces the damage caused in case of accident. This entire model series is incorporated with an active parking assist with PARKTRONIC that gives excellent assistance to the driver, while maneuvering in tight corners. At the same time, its high end versions also have a 360 degree camera that minimizes the efforts required to park this saloon. It has an advanced security and locking function including programmable key with remote control opening and closing of windows. This saloon also has restraint systems like airbags, three point seat belts with belt tensioner and seat occupancy recognition for front passenger seat. Apart from these, it has list of features like acceleration skid control, active blind spot assist, cross wind assist, tyre pressure loss warning system, under body protection, NECK-PRO crash responsive head restraints for front seats along with ISOFIX child seat mountings, attention assist and many other advanced features, which gives the occupants a stress-free driving experience.
The diesel variant is blessed with a set of stylish 10-spoke design 18 inch lightweight alloy wheels as standard that are covered with tubeless radial tyres of size 245/50 R18. On the other hand, the remaining trims are blessed with multi-spoke design 19-inch alloy wheels. Their front rims are covered with 245/45 R19 sized tubeless tyres while the rear ones get 275/40 R19 sized tyres. However, the AMG version gets the front rims covered with 255/45 ZR 19 and the rear wheels are covered with 285/40 ZR 19.
1. Seating arrangement in the petrol version is remarkable.
2. Innovative comfort features are its main advantage.
3. Safety aspects are at par with other competitors.
4. Acceleration and pick up of petrol engine is quite impressive.
5. Exterior appearance of coupe versions look stunning.
1. Initial cost of ownership is too high.
2. Maintenance cost and spares are very expensive.
3. Lesser presence of authorized service stations is a disadvantage.
4. Low ground clearance is a minus point.
5. Fuel economy is not up to the mark.
