When the Freelander 2 was being built, the key features which were considered were that the car must have the looks similar to the Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport. The damshell hood and the step roof were the exterior features/looks carried forward from the older version of the Freelander 2. The metallic side vents on the car are very sporty which enhance the side profile of this able soft roader. The raised roof and tapering rear pillar add to the sporty character of the Freelander 2.

The wheel arches also add ample muscle to the looks of the Freelander 2 making it look very strong and ready for action. The blacked out rear pillar reminds of the design from the range rover. The high ground clearance at the front and back tells you that this car can go off roads without hesitation. The Land Rover Freelander 2 is not just sporty and appealing to the eye but is also a very safe car to drive in. It has scored the best in class during the EuroNCAP crash tests. The car is so well engineered that it safeguards the occupants in the maximum possible way during head-on impact. There is a first in class airbag to protect the driver’s thighs as well which proves that such a situation would be less fatal. The Land Rover Freelander 2 in total gets 7 airbags standard on all variants. Freelander 2 is a very successfully scaled downed version of the full size range rover from the front with its distinctive design. The deep cut crystal like headlamps upfront give maximum road visibility at night and look magnificent in the day as well. And not to forget, the grill gets the typical Land Rover badging which defines what the quality of the car is. The Freelander 2 has a 4WD system that is more biased towards off-road driving than on-road abilities.

The Freelander 2’s system tries and avoids wheel spin from a stop on all surfaces and this system can work as soon as a 15 degree wheel slip is encountered. The Freelander 2 also gets the very effective terrain response like the Range Rover which has the four preset settings like; General, Grass-Gravel & Snow, Mus & Ruts and Sand. This terrain response makes driving easier on the road as well as off road. It also controls the throttle as well as the gearbox during unfavourable conditions. The new Freelander 2 has a more purposeful stance which is more sensible for the Indian conditions. It looks much sportier and sophisticated than the previous models. Also the Freelander 2 has new wheel styles unlike the older version. The Freelander 2 is one of the most fuel efficient cars of the Land Rover group.

Not only refinement but the Land Rover Freelander 2 also provides with good performance and economy. Al in all, it’s a state-of-the-art LAND ROVER product which is unmatched by other car manufacturers. The transversely mounted engine on the Freelander 2 has various benefits like excellent crash protection, flexibility in front end styling etc. The Freelander 2 in India comes with two variants; the TD4-SE and SD4-HSE. The Freelander 2 is as refined as a saloon car on road. There is no sluggishness despite of being a diesel and such a huge car. It drives reluctantly as soon as the pedal is pressed and does not disappoint no matter what the drivers preference is.

Editor's Take : The fuel efficiency of the Freelander 2 is about 9-10 km/l under normal driving conditions.

The fuel efficiency of the Land Rover Freelander 2 is not very impressive. The car manages to give an overall mileage of just 8.9 kmpl which is a huge difference to the pockets with the ever increasing fuel prices in India. Both the TD4 and SD4 variants have automatic as standard. The car is an effortless cruiser and very reliable for long journeys.

Editor's Take : The power of the Freelander2 is decent and it is available in two power ratings, one is 186bhp and the other is 147bhp, depending on the variant procured.

As mentioned earlier, the Freelander 2 comes in two variants namely the TD4-SE and SD4-HSE. The TD4-SE is powered with a 2179cc in-line 4cylinder diesel engine. This engine produces a maximum power of 150PS @ 4000rpm. It generates a meaty torque of 420NM @ 1750 rpm. The SD4-HSE is powered by the same 2179cc in-line 4 cylinder diesel engine but this version produces 190 ps @ 3500rpm and a torque of 420NM @ 1750rpm. The transmission is mated to a 6 speed automatic with command shift technology. The car also boasts cruise control for additional long drive comfort. The 4WD system in the Freelander 2 has been developed by Haldex and it uses the fourth generation Haldex multi-clutch to deliver the power. Depending on the traction available, this system delivers the power to the front and rear wheels. This system is also used in the Skoda Yeti and Skoda superb V6 in the Indian shores.

Editor's Take : The Freelander2 doesn’t have brutal acceleration, as it is the entry-level SUV for the Land Rover badge and the power is good for making those quick overtaking moves.

The common rail turbocharged engine in the Land Rover Freelander 2 is fairly responsive and there is very little turbo lag which can be neglected. The Freelander 2 does a 0-100 kmph in just 11.2 seconds. The car accelerates from 30-50 kmph in almost 3 seconds which is very impressive for an SUV.

On the exterior, the Land Rover Freelander 2 is an out and out looker. The car looks completely English and there is no doubt just from the looks that the car can deliver. When the Land Rover group builds a car, they do what they are the best at; they build the best 4WD car. Technology has always been at the forefront of Land Rovers design line. The car gets front fog lamps for added visibility. The headlamps on the Land Rover Freelander 2 get xenon bulbs. Also the headlamps have an adaptive xenon feature which adjusts the intensity depending on the lighting conditions. The exterior mirrors are body colored and are electrically adjustable. The exterior mirrors also have a memory function for the ease of more than one driver. There is a sunroof on the Land Rover Freelander 2 which is full size. On the sunroof there is an electric sliding front glass and a fixed glass panoramic roof. The headlamps are automatic and there are also rain sensing wipers that come as standard. There is parking assist both front and rear. The built quality is very solid and the Freelander 2 feels very stable at high speeds as well as during off roading action. The lines flowing through the Freelander 2 are very distinctive and make the car looks very sporty. The new Freelander 2 is very different from the older version. The new design shows off to be very pleasing to the customer worldwide. The headlamps also get independent washers for each side which clears off the dust/mud to provide good vision. The alloy wheels also add to the character of the car. The front grille is honeycomb style and finished in silver matte with some chrome lines in it. Above the grille the name LAND ROVER is embossed to give it that typical Land Rover look. The car is available is 6 color palettes which the customer can choose as per his wish. The tail lamp cluster has clear lens and boasts LEDs. These LEDs also are more visible and brighter in foggy situations.

Editor's Take : The interior space on offer in the Freelander 2 is good and even the new instrument panel design looks contemporary. The complaint that the inside of the Freelander2 is very basic will be over. The interiors have been revamped completely.

The interiors of the Land Rover Freelander 2 are very plush and top notch. It gives you the feeling you deserve from a luxury car. Along with high quality products the interior add to the character of the vehicle. The design of the dashboard is very contemporary and typical Land Rover style. But it still is very attractive. The quality of materials used for the dash and steering are very solid and meant to last. The metallic bars on the steering wheel for the horn is a very unique and good looking feature. The front seats get driver and passenger armrests for making long drives pleasurable. The Freelander 2 despite of being a scaled down version of the Range Rover has ample of space to provide you with. The interiors are offered in Almond, Ebony and Storm trims. The wood grain finish on the dashboard adds to the richness on the interiors of the car. The buttons on the inside are well spaced and large for better functionality. Steering mounted controls include audio control as well as Cruise Control.

The car has dual zone automatic Climate Control. The instrument cluster is green backlit and has an information display in between the two dials. You get information of the fuel left in the tank, odometer, instant fuel consumption etc. The seats are very comfortable and the driver’s seat is electrically adjustable. There is ample space for the rear passengers as well. The rear seats are 50mm higher than the front which allows the rear passengers to get a glimpse of the road as well. Unlike other SUVs the A-pillar on the Freelander 2 doesn’t hinder the visibility. The front seats also get lumbar support. The power window switches are placed uniquely on the upper section of the door pad and not on the right hand armrest on the door. The sun visors have illuminated vanity mirrors. The climate control also features air quality sensing which is becoming a favorite in the Indian market. The interior rear view mirror has auto dimming function. The Freelander 2 also has the best in class NAPOLI leather seats. The centre armrest has a storage compartment and 2 cup holders also. Carpet mats are provided by the company both front and rear. The steering wheel is also wrapped in leather.

Editor's Take : The performance by this engine is good and it is good enough even when you go off the road. The power produced by this engine is good as it torquey throughout the rev band.

The Land Rover Freelander 2 SD4-HSE runs on 17” five-split spoke alloy wheels with a tyre size of 235/65 R17. The Freelander2 TD4-SE runs on six spoke alloys with a tyre size of 235/65 R17. The tyres are from Michelin which give ample grip and reduce tread noise on roads. The Freelander 2 also gets a full size spare alloy wheel.

Editor's Take : The handling characteristics of the Freelander2 are good and it doesn’t feel wallowy, despite its soft set-up. The ride is fairly composed and settled and doesn’t feel jittery.

Land Rover Freelander 2 is one of the best driving SUVs available in the Indian market. It has a stiff chassis which gives amazing ride quality. The Freelander 2 absorbs almost every terrain and keeps the occupants very comfortable in every situation. Drive over everything and its pliant tall springs keep the car stable at every moment. The Freelander 2 has McPherson struts suspension at the front and multi-link struts at the rear. The ride of the Freelander is very composed and doesn’t wobble much. The light steering wheel makes it very effective to drive in city conditions. The TERRAIN RESPONSE on the Freelander 2 can be adjusted by just selecting the desired driving condition. The Freelander 2 also gets hill descent control and hold-clutch features as well. The brakes are very effective and do not pinch the confidence while driving. The car also gets the roll stability control. There are driver and passenger airbags. Full length side curtain airbags. Driver and passenger side airbags are also available. Also the innovative driver’s knee airbag is available in both the variants. There is ABS braking as standard along with EBD. The car also gets emergency brake assist too. Safety features like cornering brake control, electronic traction control and dynamic stability control also make it to the Indian models.

Editor's Take : The safety features on the Freelander 2 are just like any other luxury vehicle, as it gets airbags, ABS with EBD and even ESP.

Editor's Take : The integrated music system receives some changes, and now there is even satellite navigation along with Bluetooth.

The Freelander 2 has a navigation system with touch screen display. The audio system is from ALPINE. The ALPINE system provides with radio as well as MP3 compatibility. The music system is powered with 9 speakers in the car. This particular system is the ALPINE Dolby Prologic II 7.1 surround sound system which gives you crystal clear music output. It also has a subwoofer and tweeters. There is a 6 CD changer in the dashboard. The system also allows Bluetooth connectivity for answering calls and playing music wirelessly.
