The first generation Audi A8 was introduced in Europe in 1994 and was produced until 2003. However, it was not until 1997 that automotive consumers in the United States were able to purchase the first generation A8. The vehicle was initially based on the Volkswagen D2 platform aluminum frame, which was the first of its type to significantly reduce overall weight, increasing gas mileage without sacrificing stability. The A8 quickly gained popularity among American drivers seeking a full-sized luxury car. The 1997 sedan model was available as both the A8 and the A8L. The A8L had five additional inches added to the body dedicated entirely to the rear seat of the cabin to accommodate back seat passengers more comfortably. Available in a V6 or V8, the vehicle was also the first car to be equipped with six interior airbags. The second generation of the A8 series has been in production since 2004. The second generation is differentiated from the first by the D3 platform. Once again available in the standard version and the A8L, the D3 platform was not significantly different from the D2 platform, with the exception of the unique single frame grille, which has become the signature style for the entire line of Audi automobiles. The high performance and expertly engineered mechanical components as well as the superior handling of the Audi 8 are the key factors to the popularity of the A8. The new Audi A8 delivers no less than long-term reliability, enjoyment, comfort and a smooth ride along with an extremely lavish interior and stylish exterior. An all-new version of the A8 isn't scheduled to reach market until well into 2009, so the upcoming update starts out with the sedan that first appeared in 2004, riding on Audi's big D3 platform. The most striking visual feature of the '08 is the single-frame grille, lifted nearly whole from the Nuvolari concept car. The side mirror have also been revised, while the A8 also gets new LED taillights, aluminum trim inserts and updated wheels. Most of the changes come under the skin, however, Audi emphasizing ride comfort, safety, and handling with the 2008 A8. For one thing, the automaker claims the all-aluminum luxury "saloon" car will be perhaps the quietest on the road, thanks to the extensive use of new sound insulation.
