Overview

This company is the latest among car makers to introduce the facelift version of its hatchback model, Toyota Etios Liva . It went through minor updates in terms of both exteriors and interiors, which gives it a brand new look. Its exteriors gets a newly designed radiator grille with chrome treatment. Apart from this, the remaining aspects like headlight cluster, bumper and fog lamps have been retained from the outgoing model. This hatchback has an attractive body structure featuring several styling features like 12-spoke alloy wheels, black B pillars and an expressive tailgate with chrome garnish. Although, it looks compact from outside, it has ample seating space for at least five passengers. This hatchback also gets a few updates in the form of refined refined fabric upholstery. In addition to this, its air vents surround, steering wheel and the gearshift lever gets chrome inserts, which adds to the elegance. On the other hand, it retains the same petrol and diesel engines, which are mated with a five speed manual transmission gearbox. The car maker is now offering driver's seat belt warning and dual front airbags as standard across all its variants, which enhances the safety quotient. While the other comfort and safety features have been retained from the outgoing model. The hatchback series is currently available in three variants like Base, G, V and VX for the buyers to choose from. The top end variants have been bestowed with features like a rear defogger, tachometer and an advanced 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. While the entry level variants have features like an air conditioning system, power windows and several storage spaces. This sedan also has safety features like engine immobilizer, an inside rear view mirror, and headlight-on notification. In addition to this, the company is offering anti lock braking system including electronic brake force distribution. However, this feature is not available in the base variant. The car maker has placed it in the premium hatchback segment, where it will face the likes of Nissan Micra, Maruti Swift, Honda Brio and Ford Figo. It is available with a standard warranty period of 100000 kilometers or 3-years (whichever is earlier).

Exterior

Exteriors

This newly introduced hatchback has a distinct new look owing to its redesigned radiator grille. The car maker has completely modified its grille and has treated with a lot of chrome. In addition to this, the company's insignia gets a slight update with black background, which emphasizes its new look. The car maker is offering this feature as a standard fitment to all the mid and top end variants only. It is flanked by a large headlight cluster, which houses turn indicators and high intensity headlamps. The front body colored bumper has a wide air dam with horizontally positioned strips. The top end variant is also bestowed with front fog lamps, while the entry and mid range trims have provision for incorporating them. The side profile remains entirely similar to the existing variant but its external wing mirrors have been bestowed with electrical adjustment function. These along with the external door handles have been painted in body color, while the window frames and B pillars have black treatment. The top end variant is bestowed with a set of stylish 15-inch alloy wheels, while the remaining variants have conventional 14-inch steel rims. The rear profile too remains to be the same like its previous version. The rear bumper has a masculine structure and is designed with a license plate console. The tailgate is accompanied by a small windscreen along with a wiper. Furthermore, it is decorated with a horizontally positioned strip along with company's emblem.

Exterior Measurements:

This hatchback has a total length of 3775mm along with a decent height of 1510mm and an overall width of 1695mm (excluding ORVMs). It has a generous ground clearance of 170mm and a wheelbase of 2460mm, which is quite long.

Interior

Interiors

Ed's take: Liva has no different interiors than the Etios sedan. Despite the shorter wheelbase, there is sufficient room for five in the car. The only disappointment is the plastic quality and the instrument cluster is at the centre.

The internal cabin of this refurbished Etios Liva hatchback is bestowed with an improved fabric upholstery, which gives it a refined look. The door panels are also decorated with fabric inserts, which adds to the elegance of interiors. In addition to this, the dashboard, AC vent surround, steering wheel and gearshift lever gets chrome inserts. The top end VX and VX D variants also have inside door panels with a new wood finish, which further adds to its elegance. The seats have been retained from the outgoing model, which have integrated headrests and armrest. Apart from the entry level trim, the other variants have height adjustment facility to driver's seat. While the rear bench seat is foldable, which helps to increase the boot storage capacity. Its dual tone dashboard is equipped with features like a 2-DIN music system, an air conditioning unit and a few storage spaces. In addition to this, its three spoke steering wheel has silver inserts along with chrome plated company's badge. The top end variant gets it with a leather cover and houses control switches for audio and Bluetooth. The instrument cluster is positioned above the center fascia, which has blue illuminated background. It has a speedometer, tachometer, digital tripmeter and a few other warning lamps. Furthermore, it is now incorporated with notifications for driver's seatbelt, door ajar, and headlamp on. Its cabin has a lot of leg, shoulder and head space as it is designed with a long wheelbase and width.

Interior Comfort:

The car maker is currently offering this model series in three trim levels for the buyers to choose from. Its top end VX trim is now bestowed with rear parking sensors along with power adjustable wing mirrors. The base trim has features like electric steering column with tilt adjustment, cooled glove box, front cabin lights, digital tripmeter, seven bottle holders, a day and night inside rear view mirror and door pockets. Furthermore, they also have dual front sun visors, an air conditioning system, assist grip with coat hook and remote operation for opening of tailgate and fuel flap. The mid range G and V variants also have aspects like power windows with driver's side auto-down function, central locking system, 12V power socket, adjustable headrests, digital tripmeter, height adjustable driver's seat and passenger's side vanity mirror. On the other hand, the top end VX and VXD variants also has aspects like a multi-functional steering wheel, tachometer, rear defogger and rear wiper with washer.

Interior Measurements:

This hatchback is quite spacious from inside, thanks to the long wheelbase, width and decent height. It can house seating for at least five passengers while decent space for luggage storage. It has a large 251-litre boot compartment, which can be extended by folding rear bench seat. It is also fitted with a huge fuel tank, which has 45-litre storage capacity.

Gear

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Ed's take: The acceleration of the Etios Liva is good and it is thanks to the power-to-weight that despite lower power ratings, it has good acceleration. The drivability is what makes it ideal.

Both the petrol and diesel engines have been mated with an advanced five speed manual transmission gearbox. All the petrol variants have been equipped with a 1197cc engine. It allows this vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph mark in approximately 15 seconds . At the same time, it propels the vehicle to attain a top speed of 145 kmph. The variants with D-4D diesel engine can zoom towards a top speed in the range of 155 to 165 kmph. However, they can accelerate towards the 100 kmph speed mark from a standstill in 18 seconds.

Engine

Engine and Performance

Ed's take: Both the engines on the Liva are good enough and you can pick up of the two, depending on your running. This is one department that you do not have to worry about as Toyota has done a phenomenal job.

This newly introduced hatchback is currently available with both petrol and diesel engine options. Its diesel engine is equipped with a 1.4-litre D-4D engine, which is integrated with common rail fuel injection technology. It is based on single overhead camshaft valve configuration with 4-cylinders and 8-valves, which displaces 1364cc. It can produce a maximum power of 67.06bhp at 3800rpm along with a commanding torque output of 170Nm between 1800 to 2400rpm. On the other hand, its petrol variants are equipped with a 1.2-litre engine that has a displacement capacity of 1197cc. It comprises of 4-cylinders and 16-valves based on a DOHC valve configuration. It is further integrated with an electronic fuel injection system, which helps it to pump out a peak power of 78.9bhp at 5600rpm in combination with a pounding torque output of 104Nm at 3100rpm. All these engines have been mated with an advanced five speed manual transmission gearbox, which allows the front wheels to derive its torque output.

TachoMeter

Mileage

Ed's take: The light body weight of the Etios and the Etios Liva helps to make them highly efficient vehicles. The diesel can stunt with its fuel efficiency figures. The petrol too is good.

All the diesel variants have been equipped with an advanced D-4D engine that has common rail fuel injection technology. It has the ability to produce a minimum mileage of 20.32 Kmpl on city roads while giving away a maximum of 23.59 Kmpl on expressways, which is quite good. While the petrol variants are equipped with a 1.2-litre engine, which is integrated with an electronic fuel injection system. This motor can generate a mileage in the range of 15.1 to 17.71 Kmpl.

Power of Toyota Etios Liva

Ed's take: The power produced by the petrol and diesel versions of the Etios Liva is decent, but the drivability is phenomenal. The diesel has an edge over the petrol.

Its D-4D diesel engine is based on a SOHC valve configuration with 4-cylinders and 8-valves . This mill can pump out a maximum power of 67.06bhp along with 170Nm of torque output. On the other hand, its 1197cc petrol engine has double overhead camshaft valve configuration. This engine can churn out a power of 78.9bhp and in combination with a peak torque output of 104Nm.

Accessories

Stereo & Accessories

Editor's take : The Etios Liva gets features like in-built music system, steering mounted audio controls and alloy wheels. The lower variants do not get any of these is like a plain vanilla ice cream.

Apart from the entry level variant, all the other trims have been equipped with a 2-DIN music system including a CD player and Radio. It also has USB connectivity along with 4-speakers. While the top end variants have Aux-In socket along with Bluetooth function for audio streaming with controls mounted on steering wheel. On the other hand, buyers can customize this hatchback with several exclusive styling features to give it a modern look. Its exteriors can be fitted with roof rails, side skirts, protective moldings, diamond cut alloy wheels and stylish body graphics. While the interiors can be personalized with leather seating upholstery, floor carpets and wood inserts. In addition to these, individuals can equip its interiors with additional features like a touchscreen infotainment system, rear parking camera, mobile holder and a few other comfort features.

You can now buy Toyota Etios Liva accessories online. Great discounts available.

Braking & Handling

Ed's take: The ride on the Etios Liva is well sorted at low speeds. It glides over potholes with a muted thud. The handling is better on the Liva as it has a shorter wheelbase, but it does get a bit jittery and unsettled at higher speeds.

Its front wheels are fitted with a set of ventilated discs and the rear ones are paired with high performance drum brakes. The car maker is offering the mid range variants with anti lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution as standard, which reinforces this mechanism . As far as its suspension is concerned, its front axle is fitted with McPherson Strut and the rear one is coupled with a torsion beam, which keeps the vehicle well-balanced. This hatchback is also integrated with highly responsive electric power assisted steering system, which supports a minimum turning radius of just 4.8-meters.

Safety & Security

Ed's take :  The Etios Liva petrol gets all the safety features airbags and ABS, however, this is an optional package on the diesel version.

The car maker is now offering dual front airbags and driver's seatbelt warning function as a standard feature to all the variants, which improves the safety quotient. The entry level variant have features like an engine immobilizer and door ajar warning. While the G trim has aspects like a keyless entry function along with an option to incorporate anti lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution. In addition to these, it also has driver's seatbelt warning, door ajar notification and headlamp on buzzer. On the other hand, the top end variant has features like ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, front fog lamps, which provides maximized protection to the occupants inside.

Wheels

Wheels

The top end variants have been blessed with a set of stylish 15-inch alloy wheels, which are covered with 185/60 R15 sized tubeless radial tyres . While the remaining trims are being offered with a set of conventional 14-inch steel wheels featuring full wheel covers. These rims are further covered with 175/65 R14 sized radial tubeless tyres, which offers excellent grip on roads.

Pros

1. Inclusion of rear parking sensors and driver airbag makes it more competitive.

2. Front facade with refined radiator grille looks attractive.

3. Price range is quite affordable.

4. Performance of the diesel engine is quite good.

5. Spacious boot compartment and fuel tank adds to its advantage.

Cons

1. Fuel economy is not as good as other hatchbacks.

2. There are no updates to its technical specifications.

3. More changes can be given to the interiors.

4. Safety features are very poor.

5. Music system can be given as standard to all variants.
