Among all the cars made by this luxuriant car maker, one model has always managed stay on top of the others. It is the swish Mercedes-Benz C-Class lineup, which is also known to be the best-seller in their fleet. Recently, its facelifted version was introduced in India with only one petrol engine option. Later, to augment its sales, the company has added two diesel variants in its line-up namely C 200 CDI Style and C 200 CDI Avantgarde. Now again, it has introduced another new car in the market which is the C 63 S AMG. It is the most powerful version in the C-Class series and is going to come through the CBU route. It is fitted with a V8 twin-turbo petrol motor that has the ability to churn out 503bhp and yields about 700Nm of torque. Meanwhile, there are no changes made to the existing versions. The car maker has built this model series on a completely new platform based on the company's lightweight modular RWD architecture. With the addition of this AMG trim, the overall tally of variants have gone up to four. Among these, its CGI version is fitted with a 4-cylinder based 2.0-litre petrol power-train, while the other CDI versions are housed with a 2.2-litre oil burner.
It has refreshing design cues unlike any other saloon in its class, which eventually makes it look unique. To start with the exteriors, this new generation saloon has a radiant headlight cluster, a majestic radiator grille and sporty bumpers that gives it a regal stance. The newly launched C63 S AMG has a distinctive grille and signature bumpers, which renders it a sporty stance. This vehicle also gets a set of newly designed 5-twin spoke designed alloy wheels, which enhances its magnificence. The insides of this all new C Class saloon has a mesmerizing look and buyers can personalize it with the help of the MB Designo option. It is a recently introduced program that lets the customers to choose between several interior color schemes, dashboard trims, leather package and seating. However, this option is available only for the C63 S AMG. Its cockpit gets a stylishly sculptured dashboard with ergonomically positioned floor console and refined seats. This sedan series is also available with a list of functions and equipments as optional features. This model series is bestowed with some of the technologies, which are currently available in the high end saloons of the company. However, it gets all the standard comfort features like a THERMATIC automatic climate control system, speed dependent power steering, ambient lighting system, and a proficient suspension system. It is also incorporated with crucial safety features like ABS with EBD, impact protection beams, and active head restraints. The automaker has also bestowed this vehicle with an advanced ATTENTION ASSIST system that detects the signs of inattention towards driving and alerts the driver.
The latest trim in the line-up, C 63 S AMG has an athletic body structure with body colored skirts on sides along with metallic accents on them. This trim also gets specially designed AMG bumpers that renders a sportier appeal to its body. It also gets unique set of alloy wheels, which further emphasizes its exclusivity. Its existing variants continue to have the same exterior design. Their front facade has a majestic radiator grille featuring a perforated mesh along with horizontally positioned louvres. Surrounding this is the all new headlight headlight cluster, which is equipped with LED daytime running lights, turn indicators and adaptive bi-xenon headlamps. The front bumper houses a redesigned air dam along with a pair of air ducts, which have perforated mesh for better air intake. Its front bumper is also fitted with a chrome plated lip, which provides additional protection while enhancing its elegance. The overall look of the front profile is emphasized by the iconic company’s insignia, which is embedded on to the grille. Its side profile too gets exquisite change with expressive lines and well carved wheel arches, which eventually enhances its classy appeal. Its wheel arches are fitted with a set of stylish 5-twin spoke design alloy wheels. However, individuals can opt for a set of multi-spoke rims, which adds to its sporty appeal. This model series also gets a few styling aspects like high-gloss black B pillars along with body colored wing mirrors and chrome plated door handles. Its window will surround and waistline molding too gets a chrome treatment. Its rear profile gets a newly designed taillight cluster that houses all LED lights including turn indicators, courtesy lamps and brake light. The rear body colored bumper houses a diffuser along with a lower cladding, which gives it a sporty look.
The latest version gets slightly bigger than its predecessor as its length, width and wheelbase have been increased. Now, it has an overall length of 4686mm along with a decent width of 1810mm (excluding wing mirrors). It has a generous height of 1442mm, where as the minimum ground clearance measures at 157mm. Its overall wheelbase is now measures at 2840mm, which increases the cabin space.
Editor's take : The interior styling of the C-Class is luxurious, however it is the space in the rear seat that didn’t impress us. The quality is top-notch and the seats are large and comfortable.
The interiors of its AMG version are unique as compared to the existing variants. It has an all-black interior theme highlighted by contrast red stitching. With the help of MB Designo option, individuals can customize the cabin with different color schemes and veneers. Its existing trims have its interiors with Avantgrade styling. They have aspects including front seats in 'Cobra look', interior lighting package and a multi-functional steering wheel featuring gearshift paddles. Buyers can choose the interior color scheme with either black or dual tone beige/black color scheme. The most attractive aspect of its interiors is its dashboard featuring a glossy finished center fascia and floor console. Its instrument cluster is designed with bigger round shaped meters, which displays critical information about the vehicle including speed, tachometer, trim meter and fuel levels. This vehicle is also incorporated with an advanced infotainment system, which can be operated using the touchpad located on the floor console. Its large center fascia is fitted with a proficient AC unit along with a music player and ergonomically positioned control switches, which are easy to reach. The three spoke steering gets a slight tweak as it is covered with new leather upholstery. It is accompanied with gearshift paddles and mounted with multi-functional switches. The cockpit section is 'Cobra Look' seats, which have adjustable head rests and are covered with ARTICO leather upholstery. Both the front seats are electrically adjustable including memory setting for the driver's seat. Furthermore, the control switches for these seats are provided on door panels, which adds to the convenience. The entire new look of the cabin is emphasized by the analogue clock, which is positioned in the center fascia.
This model series is bestowed with a slew of advanced comfort features, which eventually offers a comfortable traveling experience. It is equipped with features like a panoramic glass sun roof with one touch operation, driver's side wing mirror with automatic dimming function, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, and a three spoke steering wheel with multi-functional switches. In addition to these, it also has ECO start/stop function, electrically adjustable front seats with 4-way lumbar support, interior mirror with automatic dimming function, stowage box under the co-driver's seat, rear center armrest with two cup holders, map pockets and key-operated remote boot lid release. Furthermore, it also has sun blinds for rear doors, all four power windows with one touch operation, smoker package and foot-operated parking brake with hill start assist. The automaker is also offering aspects like rear seat backrest with split folding function, ambient interior lighting package with three color schemes and velour floor mats. This latest version is now bestowed with a sophisticated touch panel with gesture support, which allows the driver to operate the navigator, music system and all the other function of infotainment system.
This model gets an improved leg and head room, especially in the rear cabin owing to its long wheelbase. It comes with front and rear headroom of 1039mm and 942mm respectively. While the leg room in front and rear cabins increased to 492mm and 686mm respectively. The shoulder space in in rear cabin is 1462mm, whereas in the cockpit has 1454mm. On the other hand, it has a boot compartment of 485 litres, which can be increased by folding its rear seat.
Editor's take : The acceleration produced by the engines is good and is as good as one will expect a three-pointed star to have.
Its 4.0-litre turbocharged petrol mill is mated with AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission that allows the vehicle to reach a top speed of 290 Kmph (electronically regulated). In the meantime, it takes only about 4.0 seconds to accelerate from 100 Kmph speed mark. The other two motors are mated with an advanced dual clutch 7G-Tronic automatic transmission gearbox that transmits the torque output to its rear wheels and allows it to reach a maximum speed of 230 Kmph. Its petrol models can break the 100 Kmph speed mark from a standstill in 7.3 seconds, whereas the diesel trim can break it in about 8 seconds.
The C 63 S AMG version is the most powerful in the line-up owing to its 4.0-litre, 8-cylindered motor. It has a total displacement capacity of 3982cc and is incorporated with twin-power turbocharger. This mill is capable of generating 503bhp of maximum power between 5500 to 6250rpm along with 700Nm of hammering torque between 1750 to 4500rpm. It is coupled to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed automatic gearbox and it powers the rear wheels. As for the CGI trim, it is fitted with a powerful 2.0-litre petrol power plant that has high pressure direct fuel injection technology. It also has an exhaust gas charger, which enhances its power output. It comprises of 4-cylinders and 16-valves that displaces 1997cc. This power-train has the ability to pump out a maximum power of 181bhp at 5500rpm that results in a commanding torque output of 300Nm in the range of 1200 to 1400rpm. The CDI versions are equipped with a 2.2-litre oil-burner that displaces 2143cc. It also comprises of 4-cylinders, which receives fuel through common rail direct fuel injection technology. It produces a maximum power of 167.5bhp between 3000 to 4200rpm along with a pounding torque of 400Nm in the range of 1400 to 2800rpm. Both these engines are skilfully paired to an advanced 7G Tronic Plus automatic transmission gearbox that allows its rear wheels to derive torque output.
Editor's take : The mileage of the C-Class diesel is phenomenal and the large 65-litre tank gives it a really long range. It returns about 10-11 km/l in the diesel variants in city if driven with a light foot.
The diesel variants are powered by a 2.2-litre mill with high pressure common rail direct fuel injection technology. This enables the vehicle to deliver a maximum mileage of approximately 23.7 Kmpl, which is is impressive. Its CGI trim is fitted with a 2.0-litre twin turbo drive-train that helps the vehicle to give away a mileage in the range of 11 to 14.74 Kmpl. While the newly launched C 63 S AMG version is fitted with a 4.0-litre drive-train featuring a high pressure direct fuel injection technology. It is capable of returning a maximum mileage of 14.9 Kmpl.
Editor's take : The power produced by all the engines is good and the bigger diesel has good power as well. The C250 CDI produces 204bhp, which is phenomenal.
Its 2.0-litre petrol motor comprises of 4-cylinders and it is also incorporated with a turbocharger. This helps it to develop a maximum power of 181bhp in combination with a hammering torque output of 300Nm, which is remarkable. Both its petrol and diesel mills have the same valve configuration, but the oil burner churns out 170bhp of maximum power and yields 400Nm of hammering torque. The C 63 S AMG trim gets a 3982cc petrol motor that churns out 503bhp of peak power along with 700Nm of pounding torque.
This model series is equipped with an advanced Audio 20 CD system that can be operated with the help of an innovative touchpad, which is located on the floor console. This unit features an advanced multi-media system along with a bigger 17.78cm color display. It is also incorporated with a Gramin MAP PILOT navigation system that helps to stay in right direction. It also has a CD player, a USB port and AUX-In socket. In addition to these, it also has support for Bluetooth connectivity for pairing of phones, which allows audio streaming and call function. On the other hand, the automaker has incorporated an advanced parking assistance system including sensors and reverse parking camera. Editor's take : The handling characteristics of the C-Class are decent and the ride is also pliant. The suspension set-up is more on the softer side for better ride quality.
This facelifted version is bestowed with an advanced adaptive braking system featuring a set of internally vented brake discs all round. Furthermore, these are assisted by the anti-lock braking system along with electronic brake force distribution, which helps to reduce slipping of this vehicle. Besides these, it is also incorporated with an electronic stability program that collaborates with dynamic cornering assist, which improves the agility by minimizing the loss of traction. It is also incorporated with a few programs like hill start assist and hold function, traction control system and acceleration skid control function. On the other hand, this vehicle is bestowed with an agility control suspension system featuring selective passive damping system that optimizes the damping effect and stabilizes the vehicle according to the road condition.
Editor's take : The safety features on the C-Class include airbags, ESP, ABS, traction control, all those that are commonly seen on the entry-level luxury sedans.
The car maker has incorporated this model with several innovative safety features, which provides better protection to the passengers and vehicle. It is bestowed with PRE-SAFE anticipatory occupant protection system that recognizes the critical driving situation and activates the precautionary measures if necessary. It can activate several safety systems by analyzing the data collected from sensors of ESP and BAS. It also has neck-pro head restraints for front passengers, which can be activated in case of a rear impact. In addition to these, there are features like Attention assist function, seven airbags, three point seat belts, anti lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, adaptive high beam assist, electronic immobilizer including ELCODE locking system, ISOFIX child seat attachment points, adaptive brakes and hill start assist system including hold function.
The automaker is offering this model series with a set of newly designed 5-twin spoke design based 17-inch lightweight alloy wheels, which are painted in Vanadium Silver. These rims are further covered with a set of high performance 225/45 R17 sized tubeless radial tyres. Customers can choose the C63 S AMG version with three different design 19-inch alloy wheels. One of them has cross-spoke design with titanium grey finish, while the second one has matte black garnish. Individuals can also opt for 5-spoke design light weight alloy wheels.
