May 15, 2014: A crash test on Merecedes C class conducted by EuroNCAP finally reveals the car scoring 5/5 star rating. Fitted with Autonomous Emergency Braking, the C Class was stands by its name even on the safety front.  During test C Class has to go through various test for toughness, timely opening of airbags and the overall tensile strength of its body. The Mercedes C class stands stiff in the bumper crash where the dummies kept at the driver and passenger seats were found in good condition from knees and femurs. However,  the front edge of the bonnet was poor in almost all tested areas and scored very few points.

Overview

Mercedes Benz C Class is highly acclaimed sedan model produced by the German automaker. It was first introduced in the year 1993 and later received modifications periodically. This sedan is currently in its third generation with model series badged as W203. It is offered two petrol and three diesel variants for the buyers to choose from. All the petrol variants are equipped with an in-line 1.8-litre engine that has the ability to produce 185bhp along with a maximum torque output of 285Nm. On the other hand, its diesel variants are fitted with a 2.2-litre engine, which is mated with a 7G Tronic seven speed automatic transmission gearbox. Among all the variants, 'Edition C' is the top end trim, which is bestowed with a few captivating exterior features. It gets features like electric sun roof, a set of alloy wheels and AMG body styling, which emphasizes its exclusiveness. Its interiors too have been bestowed with exclusive styling features likes premium black leather upholstery with contrast stitching, sport seats and interior light package with ambient lighting. Its cabin is fitted with a proficient THERMATIC automatic climate control system including separate air vents for rear passengers. It also has an advanced cruise control system featuring 'SPEEDTRONIC' variable speed limiter. This sedan is also integrated with an innovative ATTENTION ASSIST system, which warns the driver in case it detects any sign of increasing weariness and failing attention. There is a PRE-SAFE anticipatory occupant protection system, which detects a potential collision and deploys brakes, tightens the seatbelts and closes the side windows along with glass roof. This third generation Mercedes Benz C Class has a lustrous body structure with expressive lines all over. To start with the front facade, it has a large radiator grille with two horizontally positioned louvres. Surrounding this is the sleek headlight cluster, which is equipped with adaptive bi-xenon headlamps along with LED DRLs and turn indicators. The front bumper houses a perforated air dam including a pair of air ducts, which are further equipped with LED fog lamps. Its front bumper is also fitted with a body colored lip, which provides additional protection. The overall look of the front profile is complimented by the stylish chrome plated company's insignia embedded on to the grille. The side profile has a neatly carved wheel arches, which gives it a classy appeal. On the other hand, its Edition C variant is being offered with AMG styling kit, which includes sporty exterior features. These includes a set of 17-inch alloy wheels with black high-sheen finish, front grille in high-gloss black 'Edition C' badge on the wings and dark-tinted headlamps. In addition to these, its alloy wheels are embedded with signature black hub caps, which gives it a modernistic look. This model series also gets trendy features like glossy black B pillars along with body colored wing mirrors and door handles. The rear profile is quite attractive, thanks to the expressive tailgate that has an integrated spoiler. It also houses a license plate license plate console, which is further accompanied by chrome strip. Surrounding this is the radiant taillight cluster, which is equipped with all LED lights including brake lamps, turn indicators and courtesy lights. The rear bumper too has a sporty look, as it is fitted with a black protective cladding. In addition to this, it also houses a pair of round shaped exhaust pipes, which are garnished in chrome.

This sedan has an overall length of 4596mm and a total width of 2020mm (excluding wing mirrors). It has a generous height of 1447mm along with a minimum ground clearance of 157mm. However, it is built with a wheelbase of 2760mm, which is rather long.

Editor's take : The interior styling of the C-Class is luxurious, however it is the space in the rear seat that didn’t impress us. The quality is top-notch and the seats are large and comfortable.

 

This Mercedes Benz C Class has an extremely spacious internal cabin, which is made with extensive use of ARTICO leather upholstery. The Avantgrade and Grand Edition variants have the option to customize the interiors with either black or dual tone color scheme. While the Edition C trim has black colored interiors, wherein the seats are covered with ARTICO microfiber upholstery. In addition this, its dashboard along with door panels have been decorated with structured aluminum inlays, which accentuates the interiors. Its sleek dashboard houses a large instrument cluster featuring three round shaped meters, which displays vehicle's speed, tachometer, trim meter and fuel levels. It is also equipped with an infotainment system featuring a TFT color display. Its large central console has a proficient air conditioning system along with several other ergonomically positioned control switches, which are easy to reach. There is a three spoke steering leather wrapped wheel, which is decorated with aluminum inserts along with a chrome plated company's insignia. The cockpit section is fitted with well cushioned seats equipped with adjustable head rests and are covered with ARTICO leather upholstery. These seats are electrically adjustable using memory settings, wherein the control switches are provided on door panels. While the rear seats have 60:40 split folding facility, which helps to increase the boot space. There are number of features provided inside the cabin like dual front sun visors, accessory power socket, storage box and drink holders.

Interior Comfort:

At present, the automaker is offering this sedan in three trim levels for the buyers to choose from. The Avantgarde and Grand Edition variants have been equipped with features like panoramic glass sun roof with one touch operation, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, driver's side wing mirror with automatic dimming function and a three spoke steering wheel with multi-functional switches. In addition to these, they also have ECO start/stop function, interior mirror with automatic dimming function, electrically adjustable front seats with 4-way lumbar support, rear center armrest with two cup holders, stowage box under the co-driver's seat, key-operated remote boot lid release and map pockets. Furthermore, they also have sun blinds for rear doors, power windows with one touch control, smoker package and foot-operated parking brake with hill start assist. On the other hand the Edition C trim is being offered with features like rear seat backrest with split folding function, ambient interior lighting package, velour floor mats and an electric sunroof.

Interior Measurements:

This sedan has a spacious internal cabin, which provides ample leg space and head room for all passengers. It comes with front and rear headroom of 984mm and 942mm respectively. The front and rear legroom of this vehicle is about 488mm and 660mm. It has a spacious boot compartment of 475 litres, which can be increased by folding its rear seat. Its fuel tank can take in up to 66 litres of petrol/diesel in it, which is perfect for planning longer journeys.

Editor's take : The acceleration produced by the engines is good and is as good as one will expect a three-pointed star to have.

 

Both the petrol and diesel engines have been mated with a sophisticated seven speed 7G-Tronic automatic transmission gearbox, which powers the rear wheels to extract torque output. Its petrol variants have the ability to reach a top speed of approximately 230 Kmph, while breaking the 100 kmph speed mark in just 8.8 seconds. On the other hand, its diesel variants takes only about 8.5 seconds to reach the 100 kmph mark from a standstill. At the same time, it can achieve a top speed of 228 Kmph, which is quite remarkable.

Engine and Performance

Editor's take : The C-Class is offered with three engine options, and all are frugal and have good performance. The 1.8-litre turbo petrol and even the diesels have good outright performance.

 

As said above, this Mercedes Benz C Class sedan series is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The diesel variants are powered by a 2.2-litre power plant under the hood that can displace 2143cc. It is integrated with four cylinders and sixteen valves using a DOHC based valve configuration. This engine can generate a maximum power of 167.62bhp between 3000 to 4200rpm along with a peak torque output of 400Nm ranging between 1400 to 2800rpm. While petrol trims are coupled with a 1.8-litre motor, which comes with a displacement capacity of 1796cc. It can churn out massive power output of 186bhp at 5600rpm along with a commanding torque of 285Nm between 2400rpm to 4000rpm. Both these engines are cleverly mated with an advanced 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven speed automatic transmission gearbox that transmits torque output to its rear wheels.

Mileage

Editor's take : The mileage of the C-Class diesel is phenomenal and the large 65-litre tank gives it a really long range. It returns about 10-11 km/l in the diesel variants in city if driven with a light foot.

 

Its diesel engine is incorporated with a fourth generation common rail diesel injection technology featuring optimized combustion chambers and precise injectors. This power plant enables the vehicle to deliver a maximum mileage of 14.84 kmpl on highways, which goes down to a minimum of 11.42 Kmpl on city roads. While the petrol engine is integrated with a direct fuel injection system including variable valve timing. This mill enables the vehicle to produce a maximum mileage in the range of 8.37 to 11.74 kmpl.

Power of Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Editor's take : The power produced by all the engines is good and the bigger diesel has good power as well. The C250 CDI produces 204bhp, which is phenomenal.

 

The petrol variants are equipped with an in-line 4-cylinder engine that has a turbocharger. This power plant develops a maximum of 186bhp along with a commanding torque output of 285Nm, which is quite good. On the other hand, its diesel engine comprises of 4-cylinders and 16-valves. It also has a turbocharger, which enables the motor to churn out a maximum power of 204bhp in combination with a hammering torque output of 500Nm.

Editor's take : The handling characteristics of the C-Class are decent and the ride is also pliant. The suspension set-up is more on the softer side for better ride quality.

 

This attractive sedan is incorporated with an adaptive braking system wherein, a robust set of disc brakes are fitted to all its four wheels. It is further assisted by anti-lock braking system along with brake drying and priming function. The model will be launched in the Chinese market in September 2014. The rising demands in the Indian luxury car market will soon attract Mercedes-Benz to bring the long-wheelbase version of their soon to be launched new C-Class saloon to Indian shores.
