Mercedes-Benz, a division of Daimler AG founded in 1926 is a German manufacturing company that produces Automobiles, Trucks, Buses and Internal combustion engines worldwide. Mercedes-Benz’s presence in India dates back to the pre independence days. Mercedes-Benz uses alphabetic nomenclature to name its cars and among it the A Class represents the hatchbacks, B-Class—Multi-Activity, C Class—Saloon, Estate & Coupé, CL-Class—Coupé, CLS-Class—Coupé, E-Class—Saloon, Estate, Coupé & Cabriolet, G-Class, GL Class, GLK Class, M Class represents Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV), R Class represents Luxury Tourer Vehicle (LTV), S-Class—Saloon, SL-Class & SLK Class represents Roadsters and SLS AMG Class signifies Coupé while Viano Class represents Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV). In India, Mercedes-Benz offers a variety of cars including M-Class,  CL-Class,  CLS-Class, E-Class, GL-Class, C-Class, S-Class,  SL-Class,  SLK-Class,  SLS AMG, R-Class and G Class.

The recently launched New Mercedes Benz C Class takes three body shapes Saloon, Estate & Coupé. In India the New Mercedes Benz C Class Saloon has been launched. New Mercedes Benz C Class is basically a compact executive car that is in production since 1993. The New Mercedes Benz C Class has entered the third generation and is in since 2007. It has got a recent facelift that Mercedes declared in December 2010 and the New Mercedes Benz C Class has finally arrived. International edition of the New Mercedes Benz C Class that four trim levels of equipment – Executive, Elegance, Avantgarde, and AMG. In India the New Mercedes Benz C Class is available in Executive, Elegance, Avantgarde and AMG design and equipment lines .

The New Mercedes Benz C Class get a larger wheelbase and tracks, a stiffly designed body shell and it also inherits a lot of design features from the Mercedes Benz CLS Class. Besides being a premium sedan, the new New Mercedes Benz C Class has much to offer. 7G-TRONIC 7-speed Automatic transmission (in Petrol), PARKTRONIC including Parking Guidance, ATTENTION ASSIST, Intelligent Light System, AGILITY CONTROL package with selective damping system, PRE-SAFE & NECK-PRO and THERMATIC 2-zone automatic climate control are to name a few.

Editor's take : The mileage of the C-Class diesel is phenomenal and the large 65 litre tank gives it a really long range.

The New Mercedes Benz C Class is available in seven models. Three are petrol powered viz. Mercedes-Benz C  200BE CGI Executive, Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Elegance, Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Avantgarde. Three are diesel powered viz. Mercedes-Benz C 220BE CDI Executive, Mercedes-Benz C 250BE CDI Elegance, Mercedes-Benz C 250BE CDI Avantgarde and there is high octane petrol run Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG.  The 1796cc petrol engine delivers a mileage of 7.4 kmpl in the city and 11.7 kmpl on the highways. Whereas the diesel New Mercedes Benz C Class delivers a mileage of 10.1 kmpl in the city and 15.8 kmpl on the highways

Editor's take : The power produced by all the engines is good and the bigger diesel has good power as well.

There are four engine options in the New Mercedes Benz C Class. There are two petrol and two diesel engines available across three design levels-Executive, Elegance and Avantgarde. The Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG is powered by naturally aspirated high octane petrol. Mercedes-Benz C 220BE CDI Executive is powered by a four-cylinder 2143cc, 170 hp diesel engine. While Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Executive, Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Elegance and Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Avantgarde are powered by 1796cc, 186 hp, 285 Nm petrol engine. Another 2143cc, 204 hp with 5-speed automatic transmission diesel engine powers Mercedes-Benz C 250BE CDI Elegance and Mercedes-Benz C 250BE CDI Avantgarde. Whereas the Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG is powered by 8 valve, 6208cc, 457hp, 600Nm engine mated to 7-speed Tronic automatic transmission .

Editor's take : The acceleration produced by the engines is good and is as good as one will expect a three-pointed star to have.

The Mercedes Benz C 63 AMG powered by 6.3L naturally aspirated V8 engine is the fastest of all the variants and it catches 0-100 kmph in just 4.5 seconds. It has a top speed of 250kmph. The petrol powered New Mercedes Benz C Class variants accelerate to 100kmph speed in 8.8 seconds and have a top speed of 230 kmph while the diesel trims reach the 100kmph mark in 8.5 seconds and have a top speed of 228 kmph.

The New Mercedes Benz C Class is more dynamic than ever. The new C Class is larger, wider and longer than its last generation. New C Class is available in a variety of paint and finish options. There are three design and equipment lines-Executive, Elegance and Avantgarde. The Avantgarde is more close to the sporty looking C-Class while the Elegance infuses the elegant looks to the New Mercedes Benz C Class.   The New Mercedes Benz C Class is surely a head turner with its dynamic characteristics. The Standard Equipment and Elegance equipment of the New Mercedes Benz C Class has restyled bumpers besides fog lamps which are round in shape and air intakes. The Mercedes Benz C Class C 63 AMG gets a new radiator grille as well as daytime running LED lights. Besides the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG also has typical AMG body style, front façade and rear apron along with side skirts. There are also rain-sensing wipers. A lot of chrome trim is also found on the New Mercedes Benz C Class. All the variants have alloy wheels while the Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG has 18 inch 7-spoke alloy wheels. Furthermore, the headlights are Bi-Xenon and equipped with intelligent light system besides daytime running LED lights . The Rear light is also new and is based on the LED technology along with adaptive brake light that flashes.

Exterior Measurements

The New Mercedes Benz C Class is 4596mm long, 2020mm wide and 1447mm high. The turning diameter is 10.84m for all the New Mercedes Benz C Class except the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG which makes a turning circle with 11.1m diameter. The gross weight varies from 2010 kg to 2170 kg.

Editor's take : The interior styling of the C-Class is luxurious, however it is the space in the rear seat that didn’t impress us.

Two words best describe the interiors of the New Mercedes Benz C Class - Quality and Sophistication. The class that is outside also translates on the inside giving a feel of a combination of design and luxury that is par excellence. Soft materials, large space invites to step inside. The driver’s seat is raised a bit as compared to other seats for better road visibility. The shoulder and elbow room in the New Mercedes Benz C Class have also been increased for better comfort. Besides the rear legroom has also been increased in the New Mercedes Benz C Class. There is a use of high quality materials inside the new C Class including Nappa leather to the brown ash wood garnishing and use of brushed aluminium. The dashboard has a new grained surface and it houses the full color display at the centre. It has also been made more horizontal and raised as compared to the exiting New Mercedes Benz C Class. The display gives information about navigation, communication and the entertainment at a glance. The steering is four-spoke with controls on it. The steering has been ergonomically designed with controls accessible at a fingertip. There are 12 buttons on the steering wheels controlling the multimedia, cruise speed and various functions of the car.

The New Mercedes Benz C Class Elegance and C 63 AMG Sport models has storage package standard on it. There are boxes for storage placed under the front seats along with nets near the rear footwells besides cup holders and sunglass holder. The most characteristic features of the new C Class is the panoramic Sun-Roof which is a sliding glass type . The Sun-Roof increases air circulation inside the New Mercedes Benz C Class and is electrically operated and closes and opens with the touch of a button. The Sun-Roof also has a wind deflector. The instrument cluster is placed right in the filed of vision of the driver and it is in the three-tube shape. It displays varied information including the run flat indicator. The controls on the steering can be used to control most of the functions while keeping both of the hands on the steering.

The interiors are available in a variety of design line specific upholstery and leather options. The Mercedes Benz C Class Avantgarde leather is available in Black/Black, Black/Sahara Beige, Black/Cognac Brown, Alpace Grey/Black shades. Whereas the Mercedes Benz C Class Elegance leather is available in Black/Black, Almond Beige, Alpaca Grey/Black colors. On the other hand the Mercedes Benz C Class Elegance is available in Artico man-made leather in Black/Black, Almond Beige and Alpaca Grey shades. Last the Mercedes Benz C Class Executive is also available in Artico man-made leather in Black/Black, Alpaca grey shades. The trim elements on the Mercedes Benz C Class Avantgarde is Aluminium shade, on the Elegance is Eucalyptus and Burr Walnut on the Executive.

Interior Comfort

The New Mercedes Benz C Class interiors are far more comfortable than it appears. There are sunblinds that can be manually operated for the left and right doors. Equally there is a sunblind for the rear window to keep the passengers protected from the scorching sun rays. The rear view mirror of the New Mercedes Benz C Class has automatic dimming function. The steering is clad in leather to give you the best touch, feel and comfort while driving.  The windows are electrically operated. Besides there is a Panoramic Sun-Roof for the passengers to relish the sun and experience good weather.

Interior Measurements

There is Front headroom of 984mm and rear headroom of 942mm. There is a front legroom of 488mm . The driver seat height is 278mm while the rear seat is placed at 342mm. The rear legroom is 660mm.

Editor's take : The C-Class is offered with three engine options, and all are frugal and have good performance. The 1.8-litre turbo petrol and even the diesels have good outright performance.

The New Mercedes Benz C Class has four engine options - two diesel and two petrol. One of the diesel engine that powers Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI Executive Blue Efficiency is a 2143cc 170 hp, four-cylinder diesel engine. This engine produces a peak torque of 400Nm @ 1400-2800RPM. While A 2143cc, 204 hp diesel engine mated to 5-speed automatic transmission powers the Mercedes-Benz C 250BE CDI Elegance and Mercedes-Benz C 250BE CDI Avantgarde. This engine produces a maximum torque of 500Nm @ 1600-1800rpm.  A 1796cc , 186 hp, 285 Nm petrol engine powers the Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Executive,  Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Elegance, and Mercedes-Benz C 200BE CGI Avantgarde. The engine produces a peak torque 285Nm @ 2400-4000rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The most powerful of all the New Mercedes Benz C Class engines is the one that powers Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG. This is a naturally aspirated 8 valve, 6208cc, 457hp, 600Nm engine mated to 7-speed Tronic transmission. This model is available on order only and catches 100kmph mark in just 4.5 seconds. The New Mercedes Benz C Class C 63 AMG has a top speed of 250kmph.

The 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission on the New Mercedes Benz C Class C 63 AMG has a new torque converter generator that gives more dynamism, durability to the car besides reducing the noise levels and cutting the fuel consumption as well. Blue Efficiency in the new C Class represents zero emissions mobility, maximum efficiency and sustainability. The automotive technology in the new C Class has been optimized to reduce impact on the environment. As part of the Blue Efficiency there is drag reduction and use of lightweight material in the new C Class. Besides that there is also an energy management system in place. The steering system has also been made energy efficient apart from an aerodynamically designed body.

The Mercedes Benz C Class Avantgarde trim level has 17-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with 225/45/ R 17. Where Mercedes Benz C Class Elegance series has 16-inch 12-spoke light-alloy wheels with 205/55/ R 16 tyres . The Executive Class of Mercedes-Benz C-Class has 16-inch 7-spoke light alloy wheels with 205/55/ R 16 tyres.

Editor's take : The handling characteristics of the C-Class are decent and the ride is also pliant. The suspension set-up is more on the softer side for better ride quality.

Based on the assumption that accidents happen before the actual collision, Mercedes Benz C Class has every idea in place to avert a critical situation before it could actually happen. The Pre Safe system in the new C Class anticipates the accident and takes preventive as well as safety measures before the actual impact. The seatbelts tighten and the seats automatically reposition in order to minimize the injury to the passengers and the driver. The sunroof, windows close as part of the preventive measures. Besides this there are 60 electronic support systems that make the ride easier and safer . The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Brake Assist detect under steer or over steer and assists the driver to keep the New Mercedes Benz C Class on track. The Mercedes Benz C Class is also equipped with Agility Control package with selective damping system along with ABS, ASR brake drying function and Hill Start Assist that assists in driving the car up the hill and down the hill. There is also Cruise Control making the long runs quite comfortable. The C Class also has ASSYST service interval indicator to keep tab of the service intervals and ensuring the life of the Mercedes C Class.

Editor's take : The safety features on the C-Class include airbags, ESP, ABS, traction control, all those that are commonly seen on the entry-level luxury sedans.

Safety of the customers is one of the important key point of Mercedes Benz cars. Features in the car helps to cooperate better with the driver in handling the car. Various passive safety system in the car helps to prevent harsh situations about to come . Moreover there are warning flashers in the car which are activated in case the car meets any kind of accident, so that it can help prevent any new accident. Occupant protection system in the car easily reduces the cases of injury in the car when there is a case of injury. There are some examples where it restrains from having the injury. The vehicle is equipped with seat belt tensioners on the front seats and outer rear seats and with many airbags. In case of a rear collision the Neck Pro comes into action and reduces the distance between head of the occupant the head rest thus reducing the chances of a neck injury during collision. The car is equipped with front two stage driver air bags besides airbags that almost covers the entire window area thus minimizing any injury and cushion the blow from the front and the sides.

Other safety features in the Mercedes Benz C Class include Intelligent Light system with Country, Motorway, Enhanced fog lamps, Active Light, Cornering light function and Adaptive High Beam Assist to cater to various visibility conditions.  In order to ensure perpetual safety during the daytime there is LED daytime driving lights. The Attention Assist detects and warns against any change in the driving pattern of the driver. With Arktronic in place it is all the more easy to park the New Mercedes Benz C Class.

Editor's take : The accessories on the C-Class include sunroof, in-dash music system with COMAND system etc.

The Mercedes Benz C Class Executive has Audio 20 single CD player while the Elegance and Avantgarde series have Audio 20 CD player with 6-CD changer. The music system is also equipped with Aux-in and USB connectivity besides a Bluetooth connection and handsfree function . There is Radio with twin tuner.
