May 6, 2014 : India's home-grown automaker Mahindra has launched a new variant of the Ssangyong Rexton, the RX6 which will be added to the existing model range of Rexton as a mid-variant. The RX6 inherits the basic mechanics from the RX5 that is the entry level variant and all features from RX7 that is the top end variant. The newly launched RX6 comes with manual transmission along with host of features and is priced at Rs 19.96 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) . The feature list includes premium leather upholstery, electrical sunroof, 8-way electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory function, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers and intelligent 4x4 Torque on Demand (TOD) system. The RX6 is powered by 2.7-litre 5 cylinder common rail, turbo diesel engine which produces 162bhp of maximum power and 340Nm of maximum torque.
India's largest SUV maker Manhindra and Mahindra had first introduced the Ssangyong Rexton model in the country in 2012. It was first introduced in a total of two variants namely RX5 and RX7, which are powered by the same 2.7-litre diesel engine. This engine in top end trim can unleash a maximum power of 184bhp along with a peak torque of 402mm. However, in the base version, it can churn out 162bhp of power along with 340Nm of torque. Recently, the automaker has also rolled out a brand new RX6 trim in its series, which increases the total number of variants to three. The car maker is offering the top end variant with automatic transmission option, which sends out torque to all four wheels in AWD layout. While the remaining variants are available with five speed manual transmission gearbox that works with intelligent 4x4 torque-on-demand system, which enables the driver to switch between 2WD and 4WD. This model series is bestowed with several advanced comfort features including fully automatic climate control system, audible rear parking sensors, and navigation system with pre-loaded maps, which certainly makes the journey comfortable. The car maker is offering the base variant with 8-way manually adjustable driver's seat while the remaining two trims are bestowed with electrically adjustable seat.
On the other hand, its top end RX7 trim is equipped with a leather wrapped steering wheel, which is decorated with additional metal-grain accents. The interiors of this SUV are extremely spacious that can accommodate a total of seven passengers. The company used high quality scratch resistant material, which gives a luxuriant look to the cabin. In addition to these, there are a lot of chrome inserts given inside the cabin, which adds to its elegance. While the mid and top end trims are also incorporated with aspects like ESP with off switch, active roll over protection and anti slip regulation, which keeps the vehicle stable irrespective of road conditions. At present, it is placed in the luxury SUV segment where it is competing with the likes of Honda CRV, Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Skoda Yeti. The automaker is currently offering this vehicle with an attractive warranty of 3 years or 100000 kilometers (whichever is earlier).
This Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton has a decent body structure featuring classy cosmetics, especially on is front and rear facets. Its frontage is fitted with a trendy radiator grille that is designed with horizontally positioned chrome slats. Surrounding this is the large eagle-eye shaped headlight cluster featuring 'Rexton' lettering, which gives a compelling look to the vehicle. It is fitted with halogen projector headlamps along with L shaped daytime running lights and turn indicators as well. The front body colored bumper is neatly sculptured, which is integrated with a pair of wide air ducts and a small air dam. Furthermore, its air ducts are fitted with dynamic fog lamps, which dazzles the front facade. The bonnet is designed with a pair of expressive lines and is accompanied by a pair of washer. The overall look of its front is complimented by the chrome plated company's insignia, which is embedded on to the grille. It is also embedded with 'Rexton' lettering along with chrome plated company's badge that dazzles the rear profile. The rear bumper is in a dual tone color scheme as it is fitted with a black colored protective cladding. Furthermore, it is also embodied with a pair of reflectors for additional safety.
This model series has a total length of 4755mm along with an impressive width of 1900mm. Its total height measures at 1785mm (excluding roof rails) and the ground clearance at 208mm, which is generous. It also has a pretty long wheelbase of 2835mm, which helps to create ample leg space inside the cabin.
Ed's Take: The interiors of the Rexton has spacious and do feel premium. The plastic quality is good and the overall fit and finish is decent. The third row of seats are disappointing as there isn’t any kneeroom.
The Interiors of this SUV are extremely spacious with ample leg, shoulder and head space that can host comfortable seating for a minimum of seven passengers. Its cabin is done up with a dual tone color scheme, which gives it an eye-soothing look. The dashboard has a simple design but it is decorated with a lot of chrome inserts, which gives an opulent look to the cockpit. It also has an attractive center fascia featuring metal-grain inserts. It houses advanced equipments like an infotainment system, an automatic AC unit and several illuminated control switches. The instrument panel has an arch shape, which is incorporated with functions like a speedometer, rpm meter, fuel gauge and several other notification lamps. The steering wheel has a four spokes, which is wrapped with premium leather upholstery. Furthermore, it is also mounted with a multi-functional switches that further adds to the convenience. This vehicle is bestowed with comfortable seating arrangement featuring individual seats in front row and bench seats in second and third row. Its base variant is bestowed with premium fabric seating upholstery, wherein its driver seat gets an 8-way manual adjustable function. While the remaining variants have electrically adjustable driver's seat including 3-position memory setting. There are lot of storage spaces available inside the cabin like a glove box, cup holders, map pockets, drink holders, front center armrest with stowage compartment and bottle holders.
At present, the automaker is offering this model series in three trim levels. However, all of them have been bestowed with a fully automatic air conditioning system including AC vents for second and third rows, which helps to keep the ambiance pleasant. Its entry level RX5 trim has features like manually adjustable driver's seat, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs including heating function, day and night IRVM, tilt adjustable steering wheel and fabric seat upholstery. In addition to these, it also has power windows with driver's side auto up/down function, cigarette lighter, removable ashtray, third row AC vents with blower controls, reading lamps and third row folding bench seat. Furthermore, it also has illuminated glove box, power assisted steering, sunglass holder, coat hook, audible rear parking sensors, and illuminated ignition key hole. In addition to these aspects, its RX6 trim has aspects like speed sensitive steering, electric sunroof, automatic headlamps,rain sensing wipers, and automatic easy access for driver's seat. On the other hand, the automaker is offering the top end RX7 trim with a sophisticated cruise control system, which eventually provides an effortless driving experience.
This SUV has an impressive leg, head and shoulder space, as it is built with a long wheelbase along with decent width and height. It also has a large boot compartment, which can be extended further by folding the third row bench seat. On the other hand, it is also fitted with a large fuel tank with a total storage capacity of 78 litres, which is quite impressive.
Ed's Take: Despite being such large in size, the Rexton has good acceleration. The drivability is decent too.
Both RX5 and RX6 variants are available with a five speed manual transmission gearbox, which delivers torque output to the rear wheels. These trims can achieve a top speed of 180 Kmph, while breaking the 100 Kmph mark from a standstill in just 11 seconds. On the other hand, its RX7 trim is available with a 5-speed automatic transmission gear box, which powers all the four wheels. This enables the vehicle to break the 100 Kmph speed barrier in approximately 9 to 10 seconds. At the same time, it can go up to a top speed of 194 Kmph, which is rather impressive.
Ed's Take: The automatic transmission has a more powerful engine. But the transmission does blunt the performance of the engine. However, overall it’s a decent package and the power of the engine is at par when compared to competition. The manual RX6 is the pick of the lot.
Its RX5 and RX6 variants are fitted with a 2.7-litre diesel engine that has a highly acclaimed common rail direct fuel injection technology. It comprises of five cylinders and 20-valves, which displaces 2696cc. It is also incorporated with a turbocharger, which enables it to produce a maximum power of 162bhp at 4000rpm along with a hammering torque output of 340Nm in the range of 1800 to 3250rpm. Both the variants are available with an advanced five speed manual transmission gearbox that delivers torque to the rear wheels. It is also incorporated with Torque-on-demand function, which power the front wheels if needed. On the other hand, its top end RX7 trim is also equipped with the same power plant. However, this mill is tuned to produce a maximum power of 184bhp at 4000rpm, which results in a commanding torque output of 402Nm between 1600 to 3000rpm. This top end version is bestowed with an advanced five speed automatic transmission gearbox, which delivers torque output to all four wheels.
Ed's Take: The Rexton has decent fuel economy on the manual. The efficiency on the auto mode isn’t that bad either.
This model series is equipped with an advanced 2696cc diesel engine, which is incorporated with common rail fuel injection technology. Its base and mid range variants have the ability to produce a maximum mileage of 12.83 Kmpl on highways, which goes down to a minimum of just 11.4 Kmpl. On the other hand, its RX7 trim can deliver a maximum mileage in the range of 8.45 to 10.98 Kmpl.
Ed's Take: The power of the Rexton automatic is good, despite the sluggish nature of the gearbox. The manual has a new variant RX6, which isn’t permanent four-wheel drive.

Ed's Take: The Rexton comes loaded with leather seats, electrically adjustable front seats, gear controls on the steering also. It has electric sunroof, infotainment system with navigation, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers.
All the variants in this series have been equipped with a highly proficient touchscreen infotainment system that has a DVD player. It supports several media formats including MP3, DivX, MPEG and MPEG2. Furthermore, it is also incorporated with a navigation system that helps to choose a right direction. In addition to these, this model series also gets a leather wrapped multi-functional steering wheel, which makes it quite convenient to the driver. Buyers who looks to purchase this vehicle can customize its interiors with several styling features including premium leather upholstery with contrast top-stitching, wood inserts in doors and dashboard, floor carpets and illuminated scuff plates. Ed's Take: The ride of the Rexton is composed and it feels like a premium SUV cabin, as it doesn’t jitter. Even the handling is decent for the size of the vehicle.
The car maker has fitted its front wheels with a set of proficient ventilated disc brakes, which are further loaded with high performance brake calipers. While the rear ones are fitted with conventional disc brakes, which delivers superior stopping power. The car maker has incorporated this model series with an advanced anti lock braking system, which augments this mechanism. On the other hand, its front axle is fitted with double wishbone system and the rear one is paired with a 5-link type of suspension. In addition to this, both the axles are loaded with anti roll bars, which helps it to deal with all the shocks and bumps caused on roads. Apart from the base variant, the other trims are incorporated with advanced aspects like electronic stability program, anti slip regulation, active roll over protection and hill descent control system, which provides excellent off-road assistance. On the other hand, all the variant have been incorporated with an advanced power assisted steering system wherein the RX6 and RX7 trims also have speed related function, which provides precise response and supports a minimum turning radius of just 5.7-meters.

Mahindra has launched a new variant for the SsangYong Rexton today, the ‘RX6’, with manual transmission and a host of features priced at Rs 19.96 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The RX6 will be an addition to the existing model range of Rexton - RX5 and RX7. While the RX5 is the entry level variant with manual transmission, the RX7 is the top end variant with E-tronic automatic transmission with Mercedes Benz technology.
Ssangyong Motors, a direct subsidiary of Mahindra Group, issued an statement today stating that company has recorded its highest ever monthly sales since 2005. It further added that the compant sold 14,244 vehicles globally in which 6,202 units were sold at domestic front while the remaining 8,042 units were exported.
SsangYong has introduced the Rexton W in the UK, the third iteration of the Rexton. Building on this pedigree, the new car uses a body on frame construction for maximum strength - the accepted approach for a ‘proper’ off-roader - and double wishbone and coil spring suspension to the front, and a five link rigid axle with coil springs at the rear.
