July 21, 2015 : Hyundai is offering upto Rs 26,000 off on the Grand i10 in their Monsoon Splash Offer. The offer is valid till the end of July. Hyundai hopes to get a quick lead in the market with this offer and increase sales. The Grand i10 was launched in September 2013 and has been a huge success with over 1.1 lac units sold in India. The Grand ‘SportZ Edition’ was launched to celebrate the success of the car and it gets the 14-inch diamond cut alloy wheels as a standard.

Overview

Its been a very short while, when the Hyundai Grand i10 hatchback series was first launched in India. After a few months, its LPG variant was introduced. Now, the South Korean automaker has rolled out the 'SportZ Edition' to celebrate its success in the country. This new edition hosts many cosmetic features including stylish body decals, a set of diamond cut alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. At the same time, its interiors are done up with a new Red and Black color scheme, which gives a fresh new look to its cabin. This latest edition also gets Bluetooth connectivity, leather wrapped multi-functional steering wheel and new fabric based upholstery. This model series is available in five diesel and seven petrol trims for the buyers to choose from. Its petrol versions come with a 1.2-litre Kappa dual VTVT mill, while the others are fitted with a second generation 1.1-litre, U2 motor. Both these power plants are mated with a five speed manual transmission gearbox, while the petrol versions are also available with 4-speed automatic transmission gearbox. The car maker is also offering an LPG version on Magna platform, which is powered by a 998cc dual VTVT mill that is paired with a five speed manual transmission gearbox.

The machine has a stylish external appearance with several eye-catching cosmetics. The car maker is offering its top end trim with features like rear spoiler, clean silver alloy wheels, roof rails and stylish wing mirrors with turn indicators. As far as its interiors are concerned, the car has a roomy internal cabin with beige and black color scheme. It comes with a number of important comfort features like power windows, a manual AC unit, electric power steering and front wiper with 2-speed setting. While the top end version also have advanced aspects like push button start/stop function, driver's seat height adjuster and a cooled glove box. The model is also available with important safety aspects like an immobilizer, central locking system, reverse parking sensors and front fog lamps. On the other hand, the car maker is offering an optional package for Asta trims, which includes ABS, dual front airbags and a set of stylish diamond cut alloy wheels. This model is placed in the entry level hatchback segment, where it is competing with the likes of Renault Pulse, Nissan Micra, Toyota Etios Liva and Chevrolet Beat. The stylish car is also available with an impressive 2-year (unlimited kilometers) warranty, which can be extended further at an additional cost.

Exterior

Exteriors

Arguably, this is among the most stylish vehicles available in the hatchback segment. It carries the Fluidic design philosophy, which makes it look eye-catching like any other company's model. The main highlight is its front facade where it is fitted with stylish cosmetics like wraparound headlight cluster and a chrome radiator grille. Its lower grille has a hexagonal shape with black mesh that provides an air intake section for cooling. It is surrounded by dynamic round shaped fog lamps, which improves the visibility ahead. The overall look of the front is complimented by the stylish company's logo that is embedded on to the upper grille. The vehicle's lustrous side profile includes neatly carved wheel arches and window lining. Its recently introduced 'SportZ Edition' trim gets motor-sport inspired body graphics along with 14-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, which gives it a classy look. It also has trendy aspects like black B pillars and chrome plated door handles, which further enhances its style. However, its entry level Era trims have standard aspects including black colored door handles along with side moldings and ORVM caps. Coming to the rear, the newly introduced 'SportZ Edition' edition version has a rear spoiler, which is also available in the existing Asta trim. In addition to these, it has exclusive badge on its tailgate, which emphasizes its exclusivity. Its rear end is as stylish as its front facade owing to its clear lens taillight cluster, which houses high intensity brake light courtesy lamp and turn indicator. The rear bumper has a modernistic design as it gets a license plate console along with a pair of expressive reflectors. Its overall look is complimented by chrome inserts embedded on its tailgate as well.

Interior

Interiors

Ed's Take: The interiors of the Grand i10 are modern and do feel the next generation of the currently sold cars. The instrument panel is based on the same other Hyundai vehicles. The space offered for even the second row passengers is sufficient, and better than most of the other vehicles in this segment.

The internal cabin of this vehicle is designed with a dual tone (Beige and Black) color scheme, which is complemented by blue interior illumination which renders it a decent look. It comes with well cushioned seats that provide enough leg space for all occupants. These are covered with premium fabric upholstery, while the seats of 'SportZ Edition' trim gets full cloth upholstery with red inserts. The dual tone dashboard is integrated with a few features like AC vents, a glove box, a three-spoke steering wheel and an illuminated instrument panel. The top end trims get a metal finished inside door handles, a leather wrapped steering wheel and a chrome inserted gear shift knob along with parking lever tip. It is bestowed with some utility based aspects like front seat back pockets, room lamp (front), cup and bottle holders, remote fuel lid opener, map pockets in all doors and several other aspects. Its advanced instrument panel houses a digital tachometer, speedometer, dual trip meter, digital clock, low fuel warning lamp, gear shift indicator door and tail gate ajar warning and engine running time.

Interior comfort:

The vehicle comes with a lengthy list of sophisticated features. It has a manual air conditioning unit with heater and rear AC vents that regulate the cabin air. The Sportz version has been fitted with an integrated 2-DIN music system, which supports radio, CD/MP3 player, Aux-in interface, USB port along with four speakers. In addition to these, the Asta trim also has a 1GB internal memory and Bluetooth connectivity. The Asta and 'SportZ Edition' versions have a multi-functional steering wheel that is integrated with audio and call control buttons. The electric power steering system has a tilt adjustable function, which makes handling convenient even in peak traffic conditions. The manufacturer has given it a number of utility based aspects, which include all four power windows, sun visor with passenger side vanity mirror, battery saver and a large glove box with cooling effect. It has a spacious boot compartment, which can be increased by folding the rear seat. It also has luggage compartment light and rear parcel shelf for easy access. The top end trim is incorporated with height adjustable driver seat, adjustable seat head restraints, a rear wash and wipe function. Apart from these, the model is bestowed with all four power windows with driver side auto down function, a 12V power socket in center console for charging gadgets, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, a push start/stop button and a multi-information display.

Interior Measurement:

The car is very spacious from inside and comes with seating capacity of five passengers. The wheelbase of 2425mm offers ample leg, shoulder and knee room and head room for all the passengers. It has a spacious boot compartment of 256 liters, which can be increased by folding rear sea

Gear

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Ed's Take: The acceleration produced by the Grand i10 is good as well.

The petrol version is perkier in terms of pickup and acceleration as it can break a 100 Kmph speed mark in less than 15 seconds. At the same time, it can achieve a top speed of 150 Kmph. While the LPG version takes about 18 to 19 seconds to breach a 100 Kmph speed mark and it can go up to a top speed of 140 Kmph. Its diesel versions have the ability to reach a top speed of 145 Kmph. It can accelerate towards 100 Kmph speed mark from a standstill in approximately 18 seconds, which is quite good.

Engine

Engine and Performance

Ed's Take: The performance of both the engines is good and one can potter around even when lugged into a higher gear.

The petrol trims are powered by a 1.2-litre Kappa dual VTVT power-plant, which comes with a displacement capacity of 1197cc. It is capable of generating a maximum power of 81.6bhp at 6000rpm along with a peak torque output of 113.75Nm at 4000rpm. It is paired by a five speed manual or four speed automatic transmission gear box depending upon the version. This mill is integrated with 4-cylinders and 16-valves using a DOHC based valve configuration. The diesel trims have a 1.1-litre U2 power-plant that can displace 1120cc. This 3-cylinder based mill is cleverly mated with a five speed manual transmission gear box, which sends the power to its front wheels. This power plant can churn out 70bhp at 4000rpm in combination with 159.8Nm between 1500 to 2750rpm. The LPG trim is packed with a 1.0-litre bi-fuel motor that can displace 998cc. In petrol mode, it has the ability to generate 68.05bhp at 6200rpm in combination with 92.18Nm at 3500rpm. When it is driven in the LPG mode, it produces 66.08bhp at 6200rpm along with 90.2Nm at 3500rpm.

TachoMeter

Mileage

Ed's Take: The petrol engine on the Grand i10 is the tried and tested and it returns a good figure of 12km/l under normal driving conditions.

Its recently introduced LPG trim is available with a 1.0-litre, Kappa Dual VTVT motor that is integrated with a multipoint fuel injection system. This mill allows the vehicle to produce a maximum mileage of 18.9 Km/Kg on highways, which goes down to a minimum of 15.9 Km/kg on city roads. Its petrol versions come with a 1197cc drive-train that is also present with MPFI fuel supply system. Its manual version has the ability to produce a maximum mileage of 18.9 Kmpl, while its automatic version can deliver between 15 to 17 Kmpl. On the other hand, its diesel version has a common rail direct injection system that generates a peak mileage of 24 Kmpl, which is quite good.

Power of Hyundai Grand i10

Ed's Take: The power produced by the diesel and petrol engines is good on paper and even in the real world.

Its petrol trims are armed with a peppy 1.2-litre mill based that has VTVT technology and is based on a DOHC valve configuration. Both its manual and automatic versions have the ability to churn out a maximum power of 81.86bhp along with a commanding torque output of 114Nm. While its LPG version can belt out 66bhp that yields a peak torque of 90Nm. However, when it is switched to petrol mode, it pumps out 68bhp along with 92Nm of maximum torque. its other variants have been fitted with a second generation U2 drive-train that has the ability to produce 70bhp of superior power that results in generating 159.8Nm, which is good.

Accessories

Stereo & Accessories

Ed's Take: The Grand i10 comes loaded with inbuilt music system, keyless entry, push start and stop, Bluetooth connectivity.

The Sportz and Asta trims come with an advanced music system, which supports CD/MP3 player, radio with AM/FM tuner, four speakers along with Bluetooth connectivity. The 'SportZ Edition' gets a multi-functional steering wheel, full cloth upholstery in red finish, rear spoiler, B-pillar blackout along with stylish body decals. HMIL always brings a number of accessories for its cars, which enables its buyers to get it customized as per their taste. The base version lacks many features, but buyers can decorate it with exciting aspects like vibrant seat covers, premium quality upholstery, a sophisticated music system, leather covered steering wheel, floor mats, rear parking sensors and many other such features. At the same time, the owners can also decorate the exteriors with additional aspects like mud guard covers, body graphics, rear spoiler, alloy wheels, roof rails, protective cladding, turn indicator on ORVMs and so on.

You can now buy Hyundai Grand i10 accessories online. Great discounts available.

Braking & Handling

Ed's Take: The handling of the Grand i10 is good for what purpose it has been built. There is a good amount of body roll, but it hasn’t been designed to be driven fast around a track and even on winding roads at speeds in three digits.

The ride quality of this company's cars have always been a strong selling point and in this model just gets better. The suspension setup is aptly done, its front axle assembled with a McPherson strut, and the rear fitted with a coupled torsion beam axle type of mechanism. Meanwhile, the front and rear wheels are equipped with a set of disc and drum brakes respectively. The Asta Options also come with anti lock braking system, which prevents the vehicle from skidding. It also has a motor driven power steering system, which is tilt adjustable and makes handling effortless. This steering wheel supports a minimum turning radius of 4.8 meters.

Safety

Safety & Security

Ed's Take: The safety features on the Grand i10 include dual airbags and ABS.

This compact hatchback is offered with a lot of standard protective aspects, which includes an immobilizer, central locking system, day/night internal rear view mirror, keyless entry, a high mounted stop lamp, front fog lamps and a pair of bright reflectors on the rear bumper. It has seat belts for all occupants along with driver seat belt warning notification on instrument panel. Apart from these, the SportZ and Asta trims come with keyless entry with smart key, reverse parking sensors and anti lock braking system. It also has airbag for driver and front co-passenger, which adds to their safety quotient.

Wheels

Wheels

The wheel arches of Asta Option and newly launched 'SportZ Edition' trims are fitted with a classy set of 14 inch 'Diamond Cut' alloy wheels, which are covered with 165/65 R14 sized tubeless radial tyres. While the Asta trim gets clean silver alloy wheels that gives the side profile an elegant look. Era, Magna and Sportz trims run on a sturdy set of 14 inch steel wheels, which are covered with full wheel covers. These rims are fitted with the same size 165/65 R14 tubeless radial tyres.

Pros

1. Comfortable internal cabin with good seating.

2. Adequate ride quality and handling abilities.

3. Brilliant exterior styling is a plus point.

4. Large network of service centers.

Cons

1. The fuel efficiency of petrol mill is below par compared to other rivals.

2. Absence of music system in the base trims.

3. Lesser ground clearance is a big minus.

4. A few more safety features can be added.

Look and Style - Good looks from inside and out. Comfort - Front seats are not that comfortable. My max drives are on highways and found it to be tiring. Seats are quite low. For avg tall guy, handling clutch and streering is quite annoying. When you sit close to the pedal, steering is too close. Basically height and length is not matching.
