Ford Figo Review

July 20, 2015: The next-gen Ford Figo has been spied undisguised at some dealership in Rajasthan. The hatch will be launched a couple of months later after the Figo Aspire’s launch next month. It also offers 4.2-inch SYNC infotainment system, 6-airbags, etc similar to that of the Aspire. Mechanically, this 2015 Figo hatchback will be powered by the same set of engines powering the Aspire compact sedan. And like the Aspire, the 1.5-liter Ti-VCT 4-cylinder petrol with 6-speed dual-clutch automatic might also find its way in the hatchback, although, the possibilities are low.

This company in India has silently rolled out the refreshed version of its flagship hatchback, Ford Figo in the country. This latest version gets minor updates in terms of its exteriors and interiors, while its technical specifications have been retained. At present, the company is offering it in four diesel and petrol variants for the buyers to choose from. All the petrol variants are equipped with a 1.2-litre Duratec engine, while the diesel trims are equipped with a 1.4-litre Duratorq engine. Both these engines are coupled with a five speed manual gearbox that sends the torque output to its front wheels. Its new updates includes smoky stealth finish on its alloy wheels, fog lamps and bumpers as well, which gives it a refined look. Its exterior elegance is further enhanced by chrome inserts given on the radiator grille. The car maker has also incorporated its external mirror caps with turn blinkers that adds to its safety levels. Coming to the insides, it has a vibrant cyber blue interior trim that gives it a new refreshed look. Its seat covers along with center stack and door handles are treated in kinetic blue color. Apart from these, its remaining aspects like comforts and safety have been retained from the outgoing model. Its top end Titanium variant is packed with several advanced features like an integrated audio system featuring CD player with MP3 decoder and supports Bluetooth connectivity as well. It is also packed with a proficient air conditioning system including heater along with features like power steering, electrically adjustable ORVMs and storage spaces. This hatchback is also bestowed with numerous safety aspects including ABS with EBD, programmable keyless entry and dual front air bags. Furthermore, the car maker has also integrated a passive anti-theft system that safeguards the vehicle from unauthorized persons. However, the best part about this latest hatchback is its elegant looking interiors with extensive Kinetic Blue color scheme, which gives it a modern look. This updated version will now take on the likes of Chevrolet Beat, Maruti Celerio, Toyota Etios Liva, Nissan Micra and Renault Pulse. It is available with a factory warranty for 2 years or 100,000 kilometers, which can be extended for another one or two years at an additional cost. For the first time in this hatchback segment, the company is offering their small car with a 'Happy Pocket Service'. It is actually a comprehensive scheduled service that can be availed at their authorized service centers at a very attractive price of just Rs. 2,199/- only.

This hatchback has received some minor updates to its exteriors. Its front facade gets a pair of fog lamps with smoky finish, which adds to its sporty appeal. Its radiator grille is now fitted with a chrome strip that is embedded with a company's badge. Its headlight cluster remains to be the same and is powered by halogen lamps and turn indicators. The front bumper has an attractive design that houses a hexagonal shaped air dam, which provides better air intake. Apart from this, its side profile also gets quite a few updates, which gives it an urbane look . Its alloy wheels are now treated with gun metal grey finish that gives it a distinct new look. At the same time, its external wing mirrors are now incorporated with turn blinkers, which provides additional safety. However, these aspects are provided to the top end variants, while the entry level trims gets conventional steel wheels. In addition to these, it has trendy features like black B pillars and body colored OVRMs including door handles. The rear profile gets a freshened taillight cluster that is equipped with halogen based brake light, turn indicator and courtesy lamp. Its rear bumper too has a smoky finish on its cladding that further emphasizes its new look. Apart from these, it has a stylish spoiler that is mounted with third brake light.

Exterior Measurements:

This newly launched model has a total length of 3795mm and a decent width of 1680mm (excluding wing mirrors). Its overall height measures at just 1427mm but it has a large wheelbase of 2489mm. On the other hand, it has a ground clearance of 168mm, which needs to be improved.

Editor's take :  The interiors of the Figo receive a major upgrade. It now gets stylish blue or black interiors, with better quality than the previous car. The feel of the material is also good and we never had any complains with the fit and finish. The space in the Figo is definitely one of the best in its segment.

This refreshed version of this model has a spacious internal cabin that is decorated with a dual tone color scheme. Its seats along with door panels, dashboard and center fascia has extensive kinetic blue inserts, which further adds to its elegance. All the seats are covered with fabric seat upholstery and have integrated headrests for better comfort. There is a huge 284 litre boot capacity, which can be extended further by folding the rear bench seat. The seats are ergonomically designed and are provided with lumbar support, which adds up to the comfort levels. Its dashboard is borrowed from the outgoing version and is integrated with aspects like an AC unit, an infotainment system and a gearbox console. The instrument panel is equipped with several functions including speedometer, tachometer, trip meter, fuel gauge and several other warning functions.

Interior Comfort:

The car maker has not made any changes to the comfort aspects. All the variants in this series have a standard set of features including anti drip wiping function, remote fuel lid opening and power assisted steering with tilt adjustment. They are also integrated with a proficient air conditioning system including a heater that keeps the entire ambiance pleasant. This model also has features like a day and night inside rear view mirror, 12V accessory power socket, drink holders in floor console and foldable grab handles with coat hooks. In addition to these, its mid range EXi trim has aspects like removable parcel tray, front sun visors with passenger's side vanity mirror, fabric inserts on door trim, front power windows and electric boot release. Apart from these, its ZXi variant has features like electrically adjustable outside mirrors, a multi functional steering wheel, silver painted inner door handles and cargo area lamp. While the top end variant has features like deluxe floor console and a driver's seat height adjuster function. The car maker has also incorporated an advanced instrument cluster with Riviera Blue color scheme that houses several functions like odometer, distance to empty display, door ajar indicator, tachometer and headlamp on reminder as well.

Interior Measurements:

The car maker has designed this stunning hatchback with an impressive wheelbase of 2489mm that provides ample leg room to all its occupants. It is offered with a boot space of 284 litres, which is good enough to store a lot of luggage. In addition to these, it has a large fuel tank that can hold about 45 litres of fuel in it.

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Its petrol variants can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in about 15.5 seconds and attain a top speed of 170kmph. While the diesel variants can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in approximately 16 seconds and achieve a top speed of 175kmph, which is quite good.

Engine and Performance

Editor's Take:  The engine has been tweaked for better drivability and the difference is visible. The Figo doesn't struggle at low engine speeds anymore.

This hatchback series is being offered with both petrol and diesel engine options for the buyers to select from. The petrol model has been integrated with a 1.2-litre Duratec engine, which has the ability to displace 1196cc. It can produce 70bhp at 6250rpm in combination with 102Nm of peak torque output at 4000rpm. It is integrated with 4-cylinders and 16-valves using a DOHC based valve configuration. On the other hand, the diesel version is powered by a 1.4-litre Duratorq power plant that has the ability of displacing 1399cc. It is integrated with four cylinders and eight valves using single overhead camshaft based valve configuration. It has the ability to churn out 68bhp at 4000rpm along with a maximum torque output of 160Nm at just 2000rpm. Both these engines are skilfully mated with a five speed manual transmission gear box, which sends the power output to its front wheels.

Editor's take : The facelifted Figo has similar fuel economy as before and it is one of the most frugal oil burners.

The refreshed version of this model is available with the same petrol and diesel engine options like its predecessor. Its petrol engine is incorporated with a sequential fuel injection system that helps it to deliver a mileage of 12.3 kmpl in the city and about 15.6 kmpl on highways. While the diesel engine has common rail injection technology, which enables it to deliver a mileage of 17 kmpl in the city that goes up to 20 kmpl on the bigger roads.

Power of Ford Figo

All new petrol engine is based on DOHC valve configuration with 4-cylinders and 16-valves. It has the ability to churns out a maximum power of 70.03bhp in combination with a peak torque of 102Nm. On the other hand, its diesel engine has 4-cylinders, 8-valves based on a SOHC valve configuration. It can pump out a maximum power of 68.05bhp along with a commanding torque of 160Nm, which is quite good.

Stereo & Accessories

Editor's take : The Figo now gets steering mounted audio controls as a new additional feature and also has USB connectivity that wasn’t there in the older music system. The Figo also gets WiFi connectivity.

Apart from the entry level variants, this new series has an advanced infotainment system, which is also equipped with an audio streaming function. It is compatible with radio (AM/FM tuner), CD/MP3 player, USB port, Aux-in socket and four speakers. The top end Titanium variant also gets Bluetooth connectivity option for pairing mobile phones. It also has a multifunctional steering wheel that is integrated with audio and call control buttons. Its entry level variant may lack many features, but the owner can customize it with various accessories. These include alloy wheels, fog lamps, rear spoiler, a pair of roof rails and a set of mud flaps. The insides can be decorated with a music system, scuff plates, premium seat covers, gear knob bezel and floor mats.

You can now buy Ford Figo accessories online. Great discounts available.

Braking & Handling

Editor's take :  The handling of the Figo is just as good as any other Ford vehicle and are really good for a hatchback. The Figo doesn’t feel small anytime.

The braking system of this series is quite efficient that is further enhanced by an anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution in the top end variant . The front wheels are fitted with ventilated disc brakes, while the rear ones are equipped with sturdy drum brakes. It is blessed with a proficient suspension system that assists to keep this vehicle well balanced on any road conditions. The front axle is affixed with an independent McPherson strut with dual path mounts, while the rear axle is assembled with a semi independent twist beam along with coil springs. On the other hand, it has a power assisted steering system that comes with tilt adjustment function. This supports a minimum turning radius of 4.9 meters and makes handling easier even in heavy traffic conditions.

Safety & Security

Editor's take :  The safety features on the Figo include ABS and airbags, which are standard on the top of the line.

The manufacturer has given this hatchback series a lot of protective aspects including 3-point seat belts for all passengers, along with lap strap for rear center passenger, laminated glazed front windscreen, central locking system and a high mounted stop lamp . The ZXI variant is equipped with driver airbag only, while Titanium trim gets front co-passenger airbag also. The top end trim is incorporated with anti lock braking system along with electronic brake force distribution, which prevents the vehicle from skidding on slippery roads. The PATS (passive anti theft system) safeguards it from any unauthorized entry. In addition to these, it also has rear defogger along with wash and wipe function, programmable keyless entry and front fog lamps.

The wheel arches of its top end variant are equipped with a refreshed set of 14 inch gun metal alloy wheels that gives a stylish look to its side profile. While the rest of them are fitted with a conventional pair of steel wheels that have full wheel covers in EXI as well as ZXI variants. These rims are covered with tubeless radial tyres of size 175/65 R14 that provide a strong grip on any road.

1. Refreshed exteriors is a plus point.

2. Cost of ownership is quite affordable.

3. Advanced Bluetooth interface and Wi-Fi connectivity in the top end trim.

4. Safety aspects of Titanium variant are impressive.

5. Fuel economy of diesel variant is quite good.

1. Engine performance can be improved.

2. Head space is rather low.

3. Comfort features are not up to the mark.

4. Poor after sales service

5. Acceleration and pick can be made better.

After returning the Honda Brio, we wanted another hatchback in our fleet. A car that can be taken for city commute. Something that is compact, and yet spacious. The Brio did the job well, but the rising cost of petrol increased our expenses. With a daily driving of 50-60kms, petrol was a bit heavy on our pocket. Hence, in came the Figo diesel. A hatchback that we loved from the day we drove it. This is the refresh Figo, that gets more bells and whistles added to it. We see our good the Ford Figo is in the long run. We were happy with the Ford Classic and Ford Fiesta’s final reports. [read more]
