Chevrolet Enjoy

Chevrolet Enjoy is a full-fledged seven seater Multi Purpose Vehicle that will be available in India soon. This new MPV which is popular in Chinese market as ‘Hong Guang’, will hit the markets in mid 2012. The Chevrolet Enjoy MPV which was on pedestal in the Auto Expo, 2012 along with hatch Chevrolet Sail, is designed for those who look for space, comfort and style in their vehicle which can add pleasure to life. The stylish MPV is actually co-developed with the Chinese partner SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). SAIC has 50% stake in GM India and the Chevrolet Enjoy will be coming from the stables of Wuling Automobiles which is a Joint venture between GM and SAIC in China.  

General Motors operates in India with the subsidiary-Chevrolet. GM stands on top position in sales of four wheeler across the globe and such a top player in car industry is bound to produce cars that are reliable. Chevrolet has a vast range of cars in India and all enjoy a decent market share which is increasing day by day. While it has Beat, Spark and Aveo U-VA in hatchback segment, Aveo, Optra Magnum and Cruze goes into sedan category. Apart from them, there are Chevrolet Captiva and Chevrolet Tavera Neo sitting in the utility segment. With the new addition of this Enjoy MPV, the company will have enough number of vehicles to rule their respective segments.

Moreover MPV segment is at present ruled by Toyota Innova in India and it takes most of the market share in its segment. Every car maker is vying to beat its sales and in this attempt, Chevrolet is also not lagging. With the Chevrolet Enjoy, the company will directly attack Innova. Albeit, Chevrolet has its Tavera in MPV segment, it will bring the new MPV which will be built more on the grounds of style and class and would be an urban car. While Tavera Neo will continue to serve semi-urban audience, new Enjoy will serve totally urban class.

Chevrolet Enjoy will cater to need of large Indian families having seven seats. The B segment MPV will suit all needs of a passenger vehicle. Comfort will be ensured by flexi-seating in the MPV. Lotus, which is a British automaker, worked in tandem with the General Motor Technical Center in India for more than one and a half year to tune the chassis. The frame of this MPV is rigid as well as light weight because high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel is used in the body and chassis. However, ground clearance seems to be less which can create a problem for the new entry. The designers have played with the exteriors by introducing a crease in the side to divide the mass of the body of MPV. The car has a body on frame design just like Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova.

Just like Innova and Ertiga, Chevrolet Enjoy MPV will boast of its dual-row air conditioning. Safety was given a good weightage in the development of the MPV. The MPV will have loads of safety features such as dual air bags for driver and front passenger, seat belts with load limiters, ABS and tubeless tyres. However, speculations say that these goodies will be optional.

This product has been tailored for local market conditions and need of local customers for economical, user-friendly personal transportation. The new Chevrolet Enjoy will be powered by a 1.4 litre petrol unit that will be able to churn out 94.6 bhp of power and 127 Nm. A powerful 1.3 litre Smart XSDE 4 cylinder diesel engine will follow this petrol one, however the company will not launch this diesel guised Enjoy before 2013. This multijet diesel engine will be codeveloped by GM and Fiat. The engines would be produced at GM’s pant in Talegaon near Pune. As of now predictions are only for the petrol engine. Now, everything will depend on right pricing of this MPV because if prices are bang-on, this new car will really be a segment buster. That said sourcing the car from China will give a huge cost advantage and even the engine will be relatively cheap as it will be locally produced.

The new Chevrolet Enjoy will be fuelled by a petrol 1.4 litre engine. This 1399 cc VGIS technology equipped engine will be able to deliver 12.5 kmpl (approx). A diesel engine will follow the petrol one but firstly Chevrolet Enjoy will be launched in petrol guise only.

Chevrolet Enjoy which is designed with GM’s Chinese partner SAIC will be equipped with a petrol engine, and as per speculations a diesel engine will follow its footsteps further. The 1.4 litre 1399 cc petrol engine will be powerful enough to belt out an awesome 94.6 bhp of power and a maximum torque of 127 Nm can be expected out of this engine. The engine is mated well with Chevrolet’s VGIS technology. This engine is already very successful in Chevrolet Aveo and will continue to garner accolades by being housed in the new Chevrolet Enjoy. The engine of this very successful MPV in China is sure to be well refined.

The new Enjoy MPV from Chevrolet has a good acceleration of 16 seconds. In this small time frame it can achieve a speed of 100 kmph starting from 0 kmph. The MPV will run on a 1.4 litre petrol engine with VGIS technology and thus top speed of Chevrolet MPV will be around 175 kmph. A diesel engine will join the petrol soon after its launch in mid 2012 and this will be a 1.3 multijet engine by Fiat and GM.

The exteriors of Chevrolet Enjoy are marked by a raked bonnet, attractive nose, nicely shaped headlights continuing with the chrome plated smiling grille. The grille will endorse a golden Chevrolet Bowtie on it. British automaker, Lotus worked day in and day out with the General Motor Technical Center in India for more than one and a half year to design the chassis. The fog lamps are more or less like cat-eyes and the air dam is quite wide in the lower bumper. The smooth character lines on the bonnet give a fluidic appearance to the MPV. Tinted windshield adds to the comfort of passengers as well as gives a high-end touch to the overall look.

Side profile is not very interesting but complements this average looking MPV. Chevrolet Enjoy is quite lengthy. The Enjoy is recognizable from side with its thick B and C pillars along with the large pentagonal glass for the third row. However, the unique feature that can be weighed above these bits is the crease line that extends throughout the waist line to divide the mass of the body of MPV. 6 spoke alloy wheels are simple in appearance. The wheels arches are very sharply carved out. 

The car was displayed at the Auto Expo and one can notice the creases are visible at the rear also. The horizontal character lines-on more prominent and one less prominent are present on the otherwise simple and plain looking rear of Chevrolet Enjoy. A wide tinted windshield with wiper is followed by a Chevrolet Bowtie. A thick chrome band runs just above the number plate. A high mounted stop lamp is given for enhanced safety of the MPV. The tail lights are vertically placed on either sides of rear and are quite sleek. The roof rails are the highlight of Chevrolet Enjoy. Aerodynamics is enhanced by an antenna on the front side of roof. The Enjoy will certainly qualify in the taxi segment and even large families are going to love this MPV.

Since the cabin of MPVs is quite spacious, there is a lot of scope for the car maker to show in the interiors. MPVs are mainly used for long journeys with a lot of passengers. This seven seater will solve the purpose of all kinds of drives. Chevrolet will do its best to set Enjoy in competition with market ruler Innova. However, keeping the price tag low would mean many creature comforts will go for a toss. The vehicle will feature a two-tone car-like dash, with the dials and vents reminiscent of the Chevrolet Aveo. The flexi-seats have generous support for all the comfort. The MPV Enjoy will have three rows of seats with a 2+3+2 arrangement like many other MPVs in India. Power steering will be housed in the new MPV by Chevrolet along with Tachometer, 2 trip meters, rear seat belts, AC with climate control. Central locking, rear armrest with cup holders, music system, electric door mirrors, etc would be the standard features. 

Interior Comfort

The second and third row of seats can be folded flat or removed altogether for more flexibility. The third and second row passengers are expected to get separate AC vents for them. Not many details are out about this MPV tailored for Indian market but we will keep you posted as soon as new details emerge about the interiors.

This multijet diesel engine will be codeveloped by GM and Fiat. The engines would be produced at GM’s pant in Talegaon near Pune.

The Chevrolet’s new MPV Enjoy will be fixed with 6 spoke alloy wheels. The wheel arches are very sharp and distinctly visible. The 15 inch alloys will have a tyre size of 205/65.

The ladder frame chassis of Chevrolet Enjoy has been tuned by none other than Lotus and the suspension has been tuned to deal with a wide variety of road conditions. The braking system of this MPV will be very good as most of the driving will be done on highways (a case with most of the MPVs in India). Double wishbone and coil spring with stabilizer suspension is used in Chevrolet Enjoy.

Chevrolet Enjoy safety will be top-notch, as per industry sources. Enjoy MPV which sets Toyota Innova-its rival will be stuffed with a lot of safety features. 2 airbags will protect the driver and passengers in case of sudden collision. Such active safety will also be provided by Anti Lock braking system coupled with EBD.

Chevrolet Enjoy will feature a decent music system. A single CD MP3/FM player will adorn the dashboard of Chevy’s new MPV.
