Launched in 2017, the Nexon has not only been a game changer product for Tata in the ICE market but has played a pivotal role in driving the adoption of electric vehicles in India.

Since its market introduction in 2017, the Tata Nexon has been very popular due to its unique design, impressive list of features, and proven safety levels. Not only has it become a popular choice among buyers in the internal combustion engine (ICE) segment, the Nexon has also mainstreamed the EV market in India after Tata introduced its electric version in early 2020.

All these elements have resulted in the Tata Nexon crossing a significant milestone in India by achieving sales of five lakh units! In fact, starting from January 2022, the last one lakh unit sales milestone is achieved within a year. Let’s look at some of the key factors contributing to its immense popularity:

Unique Looks

It was astounding to see Tata bring most of the concept’s styling that was displayed at Auto Expo 2016 to the production-ready Nexon. Featuring the carmaker’s “Impact” design philosophy, the subcompact SUV was immediately distinguished by its unique elements like the sloping roofline, white stripes on the sides and rear, and its high-riding stance. The rear end design has always been quite sporty with its angular shapes for the LED tail lamps, and creases on the boot, with the rear skid plate integrated into the chunky rear bumper.

Keeps Up With Trends

Ever since its introduction, the Tata Nexon has remained in sync with evolving market trends and needs, consistently maintaining its popularity in the segment. The Nexon received a facelift in 2020 with a revised front design, enhanced list of features such as electric sunroof, automatic projector headlights with LED DRLs, cornering fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Also, Tata Motors has constantly introduced special editions such as the Dark Edition and Kaziranga Edition, where it took the opportunity to introduce new features.

Tata Nexon EV Max 10.25-inch touchscreen

Recently, the Tata Nexon EV Max Dark Edition was introduced where the electric SUV got the marque’s newer and crisper 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as connected car features.

A Wide-variety of Powertrains

The Nexon caters to almost every powertrain preference: petrol, diesel, and the aforementioned electric option as well. Tata’s subcompact SUV comes with the choice of a 120PS 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 115PS 1.5-litre diesel engine, both paired with a six-speed manual or an AMT.

The Nexon EV is also offered in two versions: Prime, and Max. The former comes with a 30.2kWh battery pack with a range of up to 312km, while the Max gets a bigger 40.5kWh pack that can deliver up to 453km of range.

Leading The Safety Initiative

While vehicle safety and crash test ratings have become an important buying factor these days, Tata was the one to lead the change, and it started with the Nexon. It was the first Indian car to achieve a full five-star safety rating from Global NCAP. No doubt this was helped by a strong body that was stable and capable of withstanding further loadings.

The Nexon’s safety kit includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, an electronic stability program (ESP), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and ISOFIX child-seat anchors.

What’s Next For The Nexon?

Tata Motors is currently working on the heavily revised Nexon that is expected to debut by 2024. It will not just be limited to its refreshed looks, but will also boast a revised list of amenities. It has already been the best-selling SUV in India lately, and there are no signs of its popularity slowing down. The new and updated version, with Tata’s latest design philosophy and more tech, is expected to allow the Nexon to sell the next five lakh units even quicker!
