Both feature a naturally aspirated petrol engine, but the Grand Vitara also incorporates mild-hybrid technology

Honda Elevate and Maruti Grand Vitara

The Honda Elevate compact SUV, launched as an all-new product from Honda in 2023, directly competes with the Maruti Grand Vitara. Both vehicles are equipped with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and we have tested the automatic variants of these compact SUVs to see just how fuel efficient they are in real world driving conditions.

Before we get into the details of the mileage test results, let’s have a look at the powertrain specifications of the compact SUVs variants we tested.

Maruti Grand Vitara

The Honda Elevate’s engine makes 18 PS and 8 Nm more than the Maruti Grand Vitara,. However, the Grand Vitara holds an advantage with its mild hybrid technology for increased fuel economy which showed in our tests as well. In urban settings, the difference in fuel efficiencies between these two vehicles is just over 1 kmpl. Yet, during highway driving, the Grand Vitara offers nearly 3 kmpl greater fuel efficiency compared to the Honda Elevate.

But it is also important to note that both the Elevate and Grand Vitara fall short of their claimed figures even in highway driving conditions.

Honda Elevate

Ultimately, the Maruti Grand Vitara once again emerges as the clear winner over the Honda Elevate in all three driving conditions. If your driving primarily consists of city commuting, the difference between the fuel efficiency of both cars is just over 1 kmpl. However, this difference increases to over 2 kmpl in highway driving. Even in mixed driving conditions, the Maruti offers a little under 2 kmpl more than the Honda.

Disclaimer: The fuel efficiency of a car may vary depending on your driving style, the prevailing road condition, and the car’s overall state as well.

Takeaway

While it may not be a surprise to discover that the Grand Vitara is more frugal than the Elevate, the actual gap in their efficiencies is not that big. If your priority is fuel efficiency, the Grand Vitara makes a lot of sense. However, if you prefer more power from a free-revving engine over fuel efficiency, you can opt for the Elevate. Plus, if you want even higher fuel economies, you can even consider the strong hybrid variant of the Maruti compact SUV.
