The new T4 engine promises to be more fuel efficient than its existing petrol motors, and will probably make its way to India.

Volvo Car UK has introduced a new petrol engine, the T4, in its S90 saloon and V90 estate car. With buyers shifting towards petrol-powered cars and the dubious future of diesel engines in India, the Swedish carmaker might bring in the newly introduced petrol mill to our country as well. Moreover, as the Volvo S90 and the V90 Cross Country are being imported as CBUs, the chances of the new engine’s introduction are high as the source country might get the global update soon. However, there’s a catch here: the global V90 CC version doesn’t gets this motor.

Part of the company’s Drive-E-fuel-efficient family, the T4 engine is a four-cylinder petrol engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. With a front wheel drive type, it puts out a top power figure of 192PS and 300Nm of maximum torque. The engine returns decent mileage figures of 14.94kmpl and 14.48kmpl with the S90 and the V90 respectively.

Presently, the S90 and the V90 Cross Country are only available in a single variant with the 2.0-litre diesel engine option. And if the T4 petrol motor makes it to India, the prices of these models are likely to see a considerable drop. The Volvo S90 D4 costs Rs 57.96 lakh while the V90 CC D5 comes for Rs 63.99 lakh (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

In India, the V90 CC rivals the Audi Q7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, whereas the S90 takes on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF.
