The little Tiago EV is faster than several models with higher performance outputs

The Tata Tiago EV is one of the most affordable EVs in India, priced from Rs 8.69 lakh to Rs 12.04 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s offered with 19.2kWh and 24kWh battery packs, which claim a range of up to 250 kms and 315 kms, respectively.

We recently tested out the Tiago EV with the bigger pack and the electric motor rated at 75PS and 114Nm. Its 0-100kmph acceleration times were not exactly staggering, but the entry-level electric hatchback was still quicker than several popular cars whose powertrains have similar or higher performance output.

Here’s the list with their respective times:

Tata Tiago EV - 13.43 seconds

Model

Tested Figures (0-100KMPH)

Toyota Glanza MT

13.54 seconds

Maruti XL6 AT

13.67 seconds

Maruti Grand Vitara AWD

13.99 seconds

Toyota Innova Crysta Diesel AT

14.11 seconds

Citroen C3

14.32 seconds

Mahindra Bolero Neo

15.13 seconds

Tata Tiago Petrol MT

15.29 seconds

Maruti Celerio AMT

15.77 seconds

Citroen eC3

16.36 seconds

Tata Altroz DCA

18.25 seconds

Key Takeaways:

  • The closest car in this list to the Tiago EV is the Glanza, with its 90PS 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual. Given that it’s usually quicker to launch a manual car, this is perhaps the Tiago EV’s most impressive win here.

  • The XL6 is around 0.2 seconds behind and is paired with a 105PS 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a 6-speed automatic.

  • The Grand Vitara AWD gets a 5-speed manual transmission and uses the same engine as the XL6.

  • The Innova Crysta is the most powerful car on this list, featuring a 150PS 2.4-litre diesel engine paired to a 6-speed automatic. The mentioned model is not on sale as the diesel MPV comes only with a manual transmission now.

Citroen eC3

  • The Citroen C3 is almost a second slower, while its electric version is nearly 3 seconds behind. The latter is a direct rival which offers less power at 57PS but more torque at 143Nm.

  • The only other diesel car on this list is the Bolero Neo, which gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine. While it makes 100PS and 260Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual, it is still over a second slower than the Tiago EV to 100kmph.

  • The ICE version of the Tiago is slower than its EV version by around 1.5 seconds.

  • Towards the end of the list, we have the Maruti Celerio AMT. While the compact hatchback from Maruti only packs 67PS and 98Nm from its 1-litre petrol engine, it is a lot lighter with a kerb weight of just 820kg.

  • A surprising name on this list was the Tata Altroz DCA. It has the same 86 1.2-litre petrol engine as the ICE version of the Tiago, but here it is mated to a refined 6-speed dual-clutch automatic. However, this variant is nearly 5 seconds slower in accelerating to a 100kmph than the Tiago EV.

What makes the Tiago EV quicker?

The Tiago EV may not pack much in terms of numbers on paper, but one of the biggest advantages of any electric powertrain is the immediate performance delivery.
