Though very popular in UK and has been awarded "What Car? car of the year 2012" and the "Compact Scottish car of the year 2012," the VW up! project for Indian market has been dropped for the hatch version. Test models were manufactured and tested on Mumbai-Pune highway. After the road test and the present VW India growth, the R&D team decided to not release the Up! hatch in India. The exact reaons are not released yet. As per sources, the plans to release a saloon version of Up are in progress, though the exact details of this saloon are not yet know. This decision might change over time as well, and VW India might not release any UP models at all. All these changes are as a result of Arvind Saxena's joining VW, who is well-known to have brought prosper to Hyundai in India; hope the same happens to VW, which is well-known to have built quality cars with German engineering.
