Corolla Altis 2013-2017 D-4D JS Review

Toyota India has finally launched the new version of its much awaited sedan series, Corolla Altis in the Indian car market. The company is selling this vehicle in several variants, out of which, Toyota Corolla Altis D 4D JS is the mid range trim. It is powered by a 1.4-litre diesel engine with a variable nozzle turbocharger and inter-cooling system. It can generate about 87.2bhp in combination with 205Nm, while displacing 1364cc. This engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission gear box, which allows the vehicle to achieve a top speed in the range of 160 to 170 Kmph. It has the ability to cross the speed barrier of 100 Kmph in close to 13-14 seconds from scratch. The car maker has equipped this variant with a number of innovative features, such as an in-dash 5.8 inch touchscreen audio with Bluetooth and SD card, illuminated entry system, front personal lamp, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering system and many other such features. The company is currently selling this vehicle in seven exterior paint options, which are White Pearl Crystal Shine, Silver Mica Metallic, Blue with metallic finish, Metallic Grey, Champagne Mica Metallic, Super White II and Celestial Black to select from.

Exteriors:

Starting from the frontage, it comes with a bold radiator grille, which is fitted with thick chrome slats and embedded with a company badge in the center. This grille is flanked by an eye shaped headlight cluster that is equipped with high intensity halogen headlamps and indicator. The sleek and slanting bonnet has a couple of character lines, which gives the front profile an impressive look. The large windscreen is integrated with a set of intermittent wipers with variable time adjustment function. The body colored bumper is equipped with an air dam for cooling the diesel engine and it is surrounded by fog lamps as well. The side profile is neatly designed with body colored door handles and ORVMs . These electrically adjustable wing mirrors are retractable and integrated with side blinker as well. The wheel arches is equipped with a classy set of 15 inch multi spoke alloy wheels, which gives the side profile an elegant appearance. These rims are further fitted with 195/65 R15 sized radial tyres that ensure a superior grip on the roads. At the same time, rear end is designed with LED taillight cluster, chrome plated boot lid and body colored bumper. The windscreen has a defogger and a centrally located third brake light. The overall exterior dimensions of this stylish sedan are quite standard. It is designed with a large wheelbase of 2700mm, which gives a spacious cabin inside and its ground clearance is 175mm. The overall length of the vehicle is 4620mm along with a total height of 1475mm. It has a decent width that measures about 1775mm including external rear view mirrors.

Interiors:

This Toyota Corolla Altis D 4D JS is the mid range variant and the company has given it quite a few features, which gives the interiors a classy appeal. It has quite a few storage spaces, where we can keep a few smaller things at hand. These features include a large glove box, door map pockets, cup and bottle holders, front personal lamp with storage and a spacious (470 litre) boot compartment, where we can store ample luggage . The dual color internal cabin is incorporated with fabric upholstered seats, sleekly structured dashboard with a center console, chrome plated inside door handles and several other such aspects. Engine and Performance:

Under the bonnet, this trim is fitted with a 1.4-litre, D-4D diesel engine , which has a variable nozzle turbocharger along with a intercooler. This 4 cylinder based power plant can displace 1364cc and has the ability to produce about 88.2bhp at 3800rpm along with a peak torque output of 205Nm between 1800 to 2800rpm. It is coupled with a six speed manual transmission gear box, which distributes the engine power to its front wheels. This diesel mill is incorporated with a common rail based direct injection fuel supply system, which allows this sedan to generate 21.3 Kmpl on the bigger roads, while in the city it gives close to 18 Kmpl, when driven under standard conditions.

Braking and Handling:

The power assisted steering system is quite responsive and it supports a minimum turning circle of 5.4 meters. On the other hand, the front axle has been fitted with McPherson strut, whereas the rear is assembled with torsion beam type of suspension mechanism. The braking mechanism is further assisted by anti lock braking along with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist function as well. The front and rear wheels are equipped with ventilated and solid disc brakes respectively, which are quite proficient on any road condition.

Comfort Features:

The company has given this Toyota Corolla Altis D 4D JS variant a number of innovative features. The proficient air conditioning system keeps the entire cabin cool and it is also equipped with a heater as well. Apart from these, the company has given an 8-way adjustable driver seat, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering system, push start/stop button, two reading lamps, a multi-functional steering wheel with audio and call control buttons and quite a number of other such aspects for the convenience of the occupants. Then it is incorporated with a music system that comes with a 5.8 inch LCD touchscreen, USB interface, Aux-in port along with Bluetooth connectivity and six speakers as well.

Safety Features:

The company has given this variant a number of protective aspects. The front SRS airbags for driver and co-passenger along with 3-point ELR seat belts with prensioner and load limiters provide extra safety in case of any collision. It also has ABS, EBD along with brake assist, all four power windows with driver side up/down and jam protection windows, engine immobilizer with alarm, keyless entry, a day/night internal rear view mirror and other such crucial aspects for the safety of the occupants.
