Diesel Cars have program to clean the DPF when the back pressure gets too high by injecting extra fuel and incinerating it but it does not have the opportunity to run that if you do short trips to the shops. so you have to pay for a new DPF.

Yes, you are right, the DPF does not works efficiently when you drive your car in a small distances. To shoot out the hydrocarbons, engine needs to be run for more than 5 to 6kms in a decent good speed of 60 to 70kmph and thus have to keep on changing the DPF (Diesel particulate filter)
