Answers for this Question

One of the biggest dilemmas faced by a car buyer today is deciding between buying a petrol car or a diesel. Deciding which car to buy is difficult enough and on top of that you have to figure out which of the two fuel options; petrol or diesel will suit your need the best. There are so many factors to take into account and that can make things very complicated. Diesel is cheap and economical, but the diesel version of a car is significantly more expensive than the petrol. And then there is also the average monthly running that you need to take into account and to top it all off there is the ever changing price gap between the two fuel options.

Petrol is cheaper, but diesels generally use less fuel. So which type of car should you choose?

Lots of car buyers struggle with this simple decision – which is best, petrol or diesel? The truth is that there's no one right answer. It depends on your priorities and the type of driving you do.

Diesel cars are much quieter than they used to be, so it's unlikely that you'll want to avoid them simply because of the noise. They're also more fuel-efficient than petrol, particularly out of town on long journeys.

Petrol cars are generally quieter, but the main reason that most small cars have petrol engines is because the car itself is not that expensive, and adding a diesel engine would increase the price by too much.

If you intend to drive a lot of miles, it's worth paying more upfront and going for a diesel. But if you don't use your car that much, you'll probably be better off paying a bit more for your fuel but much less for the car itself.

Determine average daily/monthly running:

A basic thumb rule while choosing between a petrol model or a diesel is you buy a diesel only when your average monthly running is on the higher side. 1,500-1,800 km a month would be considered good enough to warrant the purchase of a diesel model. Determining average running is a not that hard. A lot depends on the city you reside in too. Average monthly running in bigger cities like Mumbai and Delhi would be much higher owing to greater distances.

Maintenance : In general, servicing costs and costs of spare parts are higher for diesel cars than petrol ones. Right from the cost of oil replacement to the battery and clutch plate, etc. all cost more in case of diesel cars. Also, the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels of petrol cars are lower than that of diesel cars. However, since diesel engines do not make use of spark plugs that cost can be eliminated. But they do get turbochargers which will push up maintenance costs.

It was the thoroughly worrying levels of pollution in the country that first lead the NGT to ban diesel-run vehicles over 10 years old in Delhi. With this step of the government, we can assume that metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad will be on the list of National Green Tribunal where diesel cars above 2,000cc will be banned.

The NGT have a deep consideration on data of population density, car density, pollution levels of the cities likes Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna, Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Nagpur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Pune in question before it decides whether to ban diesel vehicles or not.

Each type of fuel has its advantages and disadvantages, one cannot be termed better than other. If diesel emits more of particulate matter, petrol has a more carbon footprint and CNG has a higher nitrogen oxide emission - all considered harmful. The proposed BS VI emission norms are far more stringent for diesel vehicles when compared to their petrol variants and far more cleaner as well. A BSVI diesel vehicle will lead to reduction of 68% and 82% in nitrogen oxide and particulate matter versus BS IV vehicles, whereas petrol vehicles are required to drop by 25% vis-a-vis the current BS-IV norms.

That said, there are efforts being implemented by government with the collaboration of the fuel makers and automakers to save the existence of diesel vehicles. Yes, there are other inventions also like electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles which are considered for future as they emit less pollution than the diesel, but it does not mean that the diesel vehicles are in danger but the laws will be made strict for their usage in order to control the pollution.

Moreover, we are pleased that as government’s sights firmly set on making India a primarily electric car driven nation by 2030 to reduce fuel import bills and running costs of vehicles. Please click on the below link to check the article on Electric cars on our website.

Yes, the government is planning to put some strong regulations across the country but till now, there is no confirmation on their next plan.

So, if you're planning for a diesel car as of now in NCR then you can go ahead with it.

Note: If you are traveling less than 50-60km a day, opt for a petrol car instead of a diesel. With the extra Rs 1-1.50 lakh spent on a diesel purchase, you can actually drive a similar petrol car for as many as two years! So, do your math carefully. A diesel usually makes sense if you are driving above 60/70km a day.

Tata Motors is back in the groove with the launch of Nexon compact SUV. The Nexon is hogging all the limelight owing to its radical design and a lot of clever engineering touches. The white ceramic strip running along the windows is a clever visual touch and merges well with the other design elements like tear-drop headlamps, smiling grille, muscular bonnet etc. Step inside and the quality of the cabin is pretty impressive, especially in terms of choice of materials and their soft-touch feel.

The Tata Nexon is powered by a set of new-age powertrains - 110PS/170Nm, 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine and 110PS/260Nm, 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine. For now, both these engines are mated to 6-speed manual transmission though AMT is soon expected to join the ranks.
