One of the biggest dilemmas faced by a car buyer today is deciding between buying a petrol car or a diesel. Deciding which car to buy is difficult enough and on top of that you have to figure out which of the two fuel options; petrol or diesel will suit your need the best. There are so many factors to take into account and that can make things very complicated. Diesel is cheap and economical, but the diesel version of a car is significantly more expensive than the petrol. And then there is also the average monthly running that you need to take into account and to top it all off there is the ever changing price gap between the two fuel options.

Petrol is cheaper, but diesels generally use less fuel. So which type of car should you choose?

Lots of car buyers struggle with this simple decision – which is best, petrol or diesel? The truth is that there's no one right answer. It depends on your priorities and the type of driving you do.

Diesel cars are much quieter than they used to be, so it's unlikely that you'll want to avoid them simply because of the noise. They're also more fuel-efficient than petrol, particularly out of town on long journeys.

Petrol cars are generally quieter, but the main reason that most small cars have petrol engines is because the car itself is not that expensive, and adding a diesel engine would increase the price by too much.

If you intend to drive a lot of miles, it's worth paying more upfront and going for a diesel. But if you don't use your car that much, you'll probably be better off paying a bit more for your fuel but much less for the car itself.

Determine average daily/monthly running: A basic thumb rule while choosing between a petrol model or a diesel is you buy a diesel only when your average monthly running is on the higher side. 1,500-1,800 km a month would be considered good enough to warrant the purchase of a diesel model. Determining average running is a not that hard. A lot depends on the city you reside in too. Average monthly running in bigger cities like Mumbai and Delhi would be much higher owing to greater distances.

Maintenance : In general, servicing costs and costs of spare parts are higher for diesel cars than petrol ones. Right from the cost of oil replacement to the battery and clutch plate, etc. all cost more in case of diesel cars. Also, the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels of petrol cars are lower than that of diesel cars. However, since diesel engines do not make use of spark plugs that cost can be eliminated. But they do get turbochargers which will push up maintenance costs.

Hey, we would suggest you to go for the Endeavour 2.2 here as it is Cheaper, optional automatic and good for limited usage. Fortuner petrol indeed is a good option. However,  The Endeavour diesel is cheaper to buy compared to the Fortuner petrol by nearly 2 lakh for the automatic Trend variant. Infact, the top-spec Endeavour 2.2 AT 4x2 is on par with the petrol Fortuner automatic also Fortuner is more expensive and would not deliver mileage as the Endeavor. Hence, Endeavor is a better deal here. Click here to check out the comparison.

Hey, if you drive for 50 kms in a day, we would suggest you to go for a diesel variant as your monthly running can be more than 1500 kms. The diesel variant though would be expensive to maintain and would cost you more than the petrol variant but you will be able to cover that cost while you drive it.
