Honda Accord 2001-2003 review

Honda Accord was once the favorite luxury car amongst the Indian auto enthusiasts. Ever since it went into production in the year 1976, it has been the best-seller for Honda in the full-size sedan segment. However in India, due to a decline in its, it had to be discontinued from the market. Now, in its ninth generation, it is all set to re-enter the Indian market again with significant advancements to its technology, styling and luxury. Its been the show-stopper for Honda at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo by grabbing all the eyeballs. The manufacturer has displayed the Plug-in Hybrid version of Accord, which is also expected to arrive soon on Indian Shores. We estimate that the carmaker will bring this full-size sedan somewhere in the second half of 2016.

1. This 9th-gen model gets a significant upgrade over its predecessor. It looks unlike any other Honda car.

2. Plug-in hybrid version is even more powerful.

1. Its interior design needs a little more work to make it look like a full-size luxury car.

2. Its price range may exceed the expectation levels.

Standout features:

For now, there are no details relating to the car, but we can expect for the advanced infotainment system featuring Apple Car Play, which is on offer for most international versions. Another thing about car is its Plug-In Hybrid technology that  change the fortunes for Honda in entry-level luxury car segment.

Background and Evolution:

The Japanese automaker first introduced this sedan in the year 1976 and it was an instant hit. In 1989, it was crowned as the best selling car in United States of America. The car has been upgraded over the time and has been a cash-cow for Honda in full-size sedan segment. In India it was introduced in 2008 and it turned out to be a success in the country. However, its sales gradually declined that forced the manufacturer to discontinue it in the year 2013. The same year, it entered into its ninth generation, but kept its distance from India.

The all new 2016 Accord is ready to arrive here in India. Though, Honda has confirmed its launch for India, its official details and launch date are yet to be disclosed. This full-size sedan has stole the show at the Auto Expo 2016 with its unbeatable styling and breathtaking aerodynamics. Also, the one displayed at the Expo was a plug-in Hybrid version. This is adding the already magnified craze for the sedan. It is most likely to arrive in the festive season, which is still a few months away from now. Soon after its launch, it will take on the likes of Toyota Camry Hyrbid.

In our opinion, this new generation Honda Accord is the best-looking sedan produced by the Japanese automaker. Its exteriors have flawless design with exceptional build quality unlike any other Honda car of today. It has a very low and wide stance enabling it to be aerodynamically sound. Everything about its exterior is perfectly sculptured and we've got to give credit to the company's designers for their hard work for bringing in such a masterpiece. You can see a loads of breathtaking cosmetic features that adds to its glorifying look. Adding to this, there are strong character lines on its sides that render it a modern appeal.

To begin with the front fascia, it has a signature radiator grille that featuring horizontal slats is fitted with a few chrome plated slats. It is embossed with the Honda's emblem right at the center.

This radiator grille is surrounded by a neatly crafted headlight cluster, which is incorporated with high intensity halogen headlamps and side turn indicators.

Just below this, body colored bumper has a sporty design with sharper lower guard. Also, it has a small air intake as well. But what really gets your attention is the LED fog lamps housings on the bumper.

Its side profile has strong character lines, which expresses its powerful characteristics. Here, you'll get to see conventional cosmetics like chrome door handles and body colored outside mirrors. These electrically adjustable external wing mirrors are also integrated with turn blinkers.

Chrome is also used for garnishing the window sills, which is another eye-catching factor of the car. The overall premium nature of its side profile is complimented by the glossy black B pillars.

The wheel arches are crafted in a more streamlined manner and they are housed with a set of clean silver alloy wheels. However, at the time of launch, we expect it to come with a set of diamond cut alloy wheels. There is no info about the wheel size, but it should be either 17 inch or 18 inch rims.

The rear section of the car looks hefty with large bumper and bigger boot-lid. There is a wide strip affixed to the boot with chrome garnish on it. Also, a chrome strip passes through the width of the bumper adding some more glitter to the rear.

The taillight cluster has a rather conventional design with sharp edges and interesting lighting pattern. They are housed with LED brake lights along with courtesy lamps and turn blinkers as well.

Overall, this new generation Accord looks stunning and much more refined than its predecessor. Even after getting significant cosmetic improvements, it hasn't lost its classy appeal.

The 2016 Indian Auto Expo helped us to get a complete picture about the Accord's magnificent exterior. On the interior front, its like no other Honda and it should surprise you. The designing of the interiors and its quality is top-notch while the fit and build is like no other car from Honda. We expect that the India-bound version to come with a dual tone interior color scheme or an all-black color scheme. As we can see through the images posted on few online portals, there is an extensive use of high gloss black material inside the cabin. This renders a premium grade appeal to the insides. Besides veneers on the dashboard adds to the grace.

First thing that we should be talking about is the seating arrangement. Here its front seats are designed on sound ergonomics and they should offer exceptional comfort. It appears that both the front seats have side bolsters and adjustable head restraints that will aid for more comfortable seating.

While the rear bench seat also looks wide and ergonomic in design, which should be comfortable for the occupants. Besides, presence of head restraints should make for a more relaxed driving experience.

The rear bench seat also gets a center armrest mounted with two cup holders. This will boost the convenience quotient of the car.

The steering wheel has a traditional four spoke design and is decorated with glossy black accents. It is mounted with multi-functional switches. Also, we can expect for paddle shifters for the automatic version, once after its arrival.

We expect that the car to come with pretty impressive equipments on-board, both on entertainment and functional front. The international version of Accord hosts an array of features and we expect the same to arrive here in India as well. There should be a touchscreen infotainment system with all necessary connectivity features. Also, it should feature navigation along with video player and other such equipments.

We at CarDekho felt absolutely surprised to see such a magnificent interior designing from Honda and we certainly expect that the car will do well in the Country.

As of now, it is hard to estimate about the engine options for India-bound version. We predicted earlier that the manufacturer would bring this model with two petrol engines like 2.4-litre I-VTEC and a 3.5-litre I-VTEC motors. Now, with the display of Hybrid version of Accord at 2016 Auto Expo, we believe that the manufacturer would bring a plug-in hybrid version for certain. It is powered by a 2.0-litre I-VTEC petrol motor and it is accompanied by an electric motor as well. The petrol motor alone produces a hammering power of 167bhp, but this figure goes upto 197bhp with electric motor. We expect that this car would give tough times to the likes of Toyota Camry Hybrid in India.

Going into further details, its 2.4-litre, i-VTEC, petrol engine is the most likely contender for the Indian markets. This mill produces a power of 177.5bhp at 6500rpm and yields a commanding torque output of 222Nm at just 4300rpm. It could be offered with either five speed manual or automatic transmission gear box with paddle shifters on steering.

It is unlikely that manufacturer would bring the 3.4-litre petrol motor to India, since it would be much more expensive, with respect to cost and maintenance. It can churn out a whopping power of 271.2bhp at 6200rpm in combination with a hammering torque output of 339Nm at 5000rpm.

There is no doubt that 2016 Accord would do better with regards to acceleration and pickup. Its international versions manages to reach a top speed ranging between 190 to 200 Kmph. While the pick-up rate from 0 to 100 kmph mark clocks at 10.5 seconds.

Ride and Handling:

We are yet to get our hands on this new generation Accord and only then we will be able to deliver our judgment. Like any other vehicle from its portfolio, this sedan is also expected to come sturdy suspension mechanism. Its international version comes with a McPherson strut type of layout at front and multi-link system at rear. Also, it features stabilizer bars at front and rear for a jerk-free ride. This should help the sedan to offer a fun-filled driving experience, even on uneven roads. While the highway drive should be fascinating. As for the braking, there is no doubt that the car would come with a powerful disc braking mechanism aided by ABS, EBD and other traction control programs. We expect that the car would come in the second half of 2016 and only then, we would be able to review the car to the fullest.

The India-bound version of Accord is most likely to come with the Advanced Driver Assist system, which is currently on offer for the International version. Besides this, we also expect for sophisticated safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and other such facilities. For now, almost everything about the vehicle is kept as secret and it would be too early to speculate anything relating to its features. But considering its class, Accord should come with cutting-edge safety features for certain.

Variants and Verdict:

Like every other Honda car, this upcoming sedan is also expected to come in at least two trim levels. However, price tag for both is expected to be expensive. There is no doubt that the International version of Accord has everything that is  needed to impress an average customer. Be it an exterior styling, interior design, performance or features, it has everything, which are needed to earn the love of auto enthusiasts. For Indian market, Honda really needs to focus on marketing the vehicle as a top class car, else it would loose the game to the likes of Skoda or Toyota.
