A Swedish automobile manufacturer, the Volvo Car Corporation was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Though it is currently owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, it was originally established as a subsidiary of the ball bearing maker SKF. But SKF sold most of the shares when Volvo AB was introduced on the Swedish stock exchange in 1935, and Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo until 1999. That year, Ford acquired Volvo Cars as a part of its Premier Automotive Group but offered it for sale in December 2008 after suffering losses that year. After considering several offers, Ford finalized on the Chinese company Zheijang Geely Holding Group, and an agreement was finalized on March 28, 2010 for $1.8 billion. The company manufactures and markets a range of segments via Volvo cars, including SUVs, station wagons, sedans, compact executive sedans and coupes. The company has about 2, 300 dealerships for the sales of Volvo cars from approximately 100 national sales companies spread all across the world. Volvo Cars' largest markets include the United States, Sweden, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Belgium.
In 2011, Volvo Cars recorded a global sales of 4, 49, 255 units, an increase of 20.3 per cent compared to 2010's sales records. The auto giant is further working out the details of its intention to boost annual worldwide deliveries to at least 80, 000 units by 2020. And as far the position of Volvo cars in India is concerned, they seem to be doing pretty good. The company also plans to catapult Volvo cars as the leader of the Indian luxury car segment by 2020. But what really works in favour of Volvo cars in India is the attention given to including top-notch safety features in Volvo cars. Also, the eight state-of-the-art dealerships for Volvo cars in India located in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Kochi, Coimbatore, Chennai, and Chandigarh promise personalized service for both, the buyer, and also their Volvo cars.
