Safari Storme 2012-2015 Explorer Edition Review
The home grown automobile giant and the leading SUV manufacturer, Tata Motors have rolled out the Explorer Edition of their most admired SUV, Tata Safari Storme. Launched barely a year ago, the Tata Safari Storme model series went on to steal the hearts of many SUV freaks in the Indian automobile market. Now the company has introduced this new Tata Safari Storme Explorer Edition loaded with stunning accessories and classy interior features. The company, however hasn't made any change to the technicalities of the SUV, which means you can expect the same power, performance and driving dynamics in this new version as well. This premium SUV is powered by the same 2.2-litre VariCOR diesel engine that can churn out a power of about 138.1bhp at 4000rpm and the maximum torque produced is 320Nm between 1700 to 2700rpm. This SUV has been coupled with five speed manual transmission gearbox and it enables this premium sports utility vehicle to return a maximum 14kmpl of mileage. As far as the Explorer Edition features are concerned, they include chrome garnished headlamps, a 2-DIN infotainment system, chrome garnished tail lights, body decals on the front and the sides, door visors, nudge guard and a few other such aspects. These new exterior and interior features will make this SUV even more desirable in the SUV segment.
Exterior:
When it comes to the new Tata Safari Storme Explorer Edition's external appearance, we can see that the vehicle now looks more sportier and rugged in comparison to its existing variants. There are a lot of chrome accents used on its exteriors, which makes it look superior to the rest of its variants. From the front, there have been significant changes such as a new chrome based radiant head light cluster, a nudge guard and so on. The radiator grille is very stylish and it has got a chrome garnish along with a prominent chrome plated company logo fitted in the center. The headlights are surrounded by a chrome outline that adds more flamboyance to its front facade. The bottom of its frontage has been given a sturdy body colored bumper, which is further equipped with a nudge guard. This adds a dynamic look to its front fascia. Furthermore, you can find classy decals on the bonnet that further compliments the frontage. The side profile of the SUV has door visors with company's badging on it. Its neatly carved wheel arches have been fitted perfectly with a set of stylish alloy wheels, while the doors have been equipped with body colored external wing mirrors and door handles. The rear end of this SUV has stylish tail lamps that are surrounded by a chrome outline. This makes it look superior to any other SUV of its class.
Interiors:
Coming to the interior cabin section, the new Tata Safari Storme Explorer Edition comes with premium class seating arrangement along with few additional features as well. The company is offering some of the most exciting features like premium leather seat covers, air freshener, rubber mat, car care kit along with the most sophisticated 2-DIN Touchscreen Infotainment system. The steering wheel along with the gearshift knob has been covered in a premium leather covering. There are silver accents on the steering wheel, while the gearshift knob has some chrome elements on it. The interior cabin section is very spacious that can provide seating for at least seven passengers. Apart from these, there are a lot of utility based convenience features, which have been incorporated to this sports utility vehicle. These functions include 60:40 split seat with tumble fold, arm rest for driver and front co-passenger, a three position lumbar support for the front seats, cigarette lighter in front console and several other such aspects. With such features, the occupants will definitely experience the lavish luxury on the go.
Engine and Performance:
The company has fitted this new Tata Safari Storme Explorer Edition with the same VVT 2.2-litre VariCOR diesel power plant, which has a displacing capacity of 2179cc. This 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine has the ability to unleash a maximum power output of 138.1bhp at 4000rpm and generates a thumping maximum torque of 320Nm between 1700 to 2700rpm. This turbocharged diesel mill has been skillfully mated to a five speed manual transmission gear box. This engine enables this SUV to reach a top speed of about 150kmph quite easily, while crossing the 100kmph speed barrier in lesser than 15 seconds. This SUV can return a healthy mileage of about 10.8kmpl within the city limits and about 14kmpl on the highways, which is rather good for an SUV of this stature.
Braking and Handling:
The company hasn't made any major change in this new Explorer Edition of the Tata Safari Storme in comparison to the existing variants in its lineup. Both the front and rear wheels of this new Explorer Edition have been fitted with vacuum assisted independent hydraulic ventilated disc brakes that perform very efficiently. This disc braking mechanism is assisted by the anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution system. The new Explorer Edition's front axle gets the independent double wishbone type of suspension system with coil spring over shock absorbers, while the rear axle gets the 5–link suspension with coil springs.
Comfort Feature:
There are a plenty of comfort features in this new Tata Safari Storme Explorer Edition. This new sports utility vehicle trim has got some of the impressive features, which include a proficient air conditioning system, roof mounted rear AC vents, power steering with adjustable steering column, electrically adjustable ORVMs, all power windows with express power down feature, electrically operated remote fuel flap, electrical rear glass demister and more. This new edition gets a few additional features, which include an advanced 2-DIN Touchscreen infotainment system along with leather seats, rubber mats and an air freshener as well.

This Premium SUV comes with sophisticated safety functions that promise utmost security to the passengers. The list of safety functions include an ABS with EBD, dual air bags (for driver and front passenger), side impact bars, reverse guide system with display in IRVM, engine immobilizer system, central locking and child safety locks and several other such features.
Pros: Aggressive exterior stance, roomy interiors, improved features.
