Wagon R 2013-2022 LX BS IV Review

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is a kei car in which the R stands for Radical. It is one of the first cars to use the "tall wagon or tall boy" design in which the car is designed to be unusually tall with a short bonnet and almost vertical hatchback and sides in order to maximise cabin space while staying within the kei car dimension restrictions. Maruti Wagon R LX is the base model for the new Wagon R, packed with 1.0L petrol engine and 5 Speed manual transmission gearbox and many comfort features. Wagon R LX is an extremely reliable model from Maruti Suzuki, one of the oldest and best car manufacturers of India. Despite slow car sales when it was initially launched, Maruti Wagon R has found a market for itself now, especially among young Indian urban professionals who don't mind its boxy slab-sided looks, but value its Maruti lineage. The car is currently India's second largest selling car, after Maruti Alto.

Exteriors

With a bold and imposing stance, Maruti Wagon R LX has the tallest cabin height in its class. This hatchback has a box-bread body design, and is 3595mm long while being 1490mm wide and 1670mm high. With the wheelbase of 2400mm, the ground clearance is 165mm makes the seating comfortable and the turning radius is about 4.6 meters that makes it easy to manoeuvre in the busy Indian streets. The car comes equipped with chrome accentuated front grille, flared fenders, ORVMs on both sides, stylish tail gate and crystal effect tail lamps. In addition to these, the vehicle has tinted glasses, blue tint headlamps, body coloured chrome back door garnish, wheel caps, amber colour side indicators, tubeless tyres, and pillar antenna. Maruti Wagon R LX is available in the following colours: midnight black, superior white, silky silver, bakers chocolate, glistening grey, fire brick red, and breeze blue.

Interiors

Because of its "tallboy" design, Maruti Wagon R LX has spacious dual-tone interiors, and a sophisticated, comfortable cabin design. The car comes outfitted with an air conditioner and a heater with rotary AC controls. Fabric upholstery (Dual Tone 3D Effect Plush Upholstery) gives the interiors of the car a neat and rich look . However, a digital clock and a digital odometer are missing. Leather steering wheel and an adjustable steering wheel would have increased the utility and comfort factor of the interiors. Glove compartment offers storage space for handy belongings, while an electronic multi-tripmeter has also been included as a feature. The car has been outfitted with ergonomically designed seats, moulded roof lining and needle punch floor carpet. It also has a 3 position cabin lamps in the front and anti glare inside rear view mirror (IRVM). There has been made a provision for speakers as well.

Engine & Performance

Maruti Wagon R LX comes with a 1.0-litre, 998cc 12-valve KB10 petrol engine which is capable of churning out a maximum of 67bhp at 6200 rpm along with 90Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. The 5-speed gearbox of the car mated with the 1.0-litre petrol engine gives out a mileage of 17.08 kmpl on road and 20.51 kmpl on the highways, meaning an average mileage of 15.3 kmpl is handed out by the car . With the average fuel efficiency the entry level car from the stables of Maruti is good for 535 kms approximately on a full tank. The K Series 67bhp petrol engine has 3 cylinders with 4 valves per cylinder . The fuel supply system is of the MPFI type. Light kerb weight (750–775 kg) in all models of Maruti Wagon R makes for a nimble car with good acceleration and a top speed of around 135 km/h (84 mph). Both the acceleration and pick-up of the LX variant are considerably effective.

Braking & Handling

The front brakes of Maruti Wagon R LX are of the ventilated disc type, while the rear brakes are of the drum type. The front suspension is McPherson strut with coil spring, while, on the other hand, the rear suspension is an isolated trailing link with coil spring. Effective handling is ensured by a collapsible steering column and tubeless tyres of 145/80 R13 type .

Safety Features

Numerous safety features in Maruti Wagon R LX combine to keep the car safe for its passengers at all times. These include child safety locks, passenger side rear view mirror, rear seat belts, collapsible steering column and energy absorbing body structure with side impact beams. An engine immobilizer and a centrally mounted fuel tank augment the safety of the vehicle together. Halogen lamps aid in driving when it is dark, and these also include headlamp levelling device. Also, adjustable seats make sure that comfort and safety are never compromised. However, certain crucial safety features such as anti-lock braking system, brake assist, central locking, and airbags have not been incorporated. Intelligent Computerised Anti-Theft System (iCATS) has been integrated in the car though, and the vehicle has been made capable itself to diagnose breakdown. A unique high mount stop lamp is an added feature.

Comfort Features

Maruti Wagon R LX does not offer a lot in terms of comfort and convenience. Apart from the lack of some essential features such as power steering, power windows, seat lumbar support, multi-function steering wheel, cruise control and parking sensors, there is also no air quality control, remote trunk opener, trunk light, or vanity mirror. This base variant from Maruti only provides low fuel warning light, rear seat headrest, and cup holders in the front. The front seats can be reclined and slid full flat, while the rear seat has a 60:40 split and folding feature. There are 3 foldable grip assistants too. Only the bare minimum of comfort features allow for a low price, but make the ride in the car quite a comfortless one.

Pros Maruti Wagon R LX is a very spacious hatchback and gives a good fuel economy.

Cons: Apart from unpleasant boxy looks, Maruti Wagon R LX has a notchy gearbox and uncomfortable rear seat.
